My guess is you got to the Commander rank offline (no XBL gold)?
Bungie made the game so that earning credits offline ranks you up faster than if you played online (so people without XBL Gold could still progress). If you Reach a certain rank offline, then go play online, you lose credits and the game drops your rank to what it thinks you should be if you never played offline. It was done to stop people boosting their rank offline then playing online to unlock armours etc.
No, it is the other war round. You Earn more Credits online. Dont worry about what you have already earned, you will get it back much quicker by playing Online matches!
You will be back to where you were in no time!
