I think cartoon is the wrong word to use here. I’d describe Halo 3 as more … artistic. Brighter color pallets combined visually satisfying and unique areas are what really made Halo 3 memorable. Despite not having the best graphics, even at the time of its release, it still looked amazing, and I feel that has a lot to do with the game slightly surreal approach to the environments and characters.
So yes, I’d like future Halo games to return Halo 3’s artistic design.
I want it to look more… realistic, not really ‘cartoon’ like, like halo 3, and not really doom and gloom like Reach and halo 4.
I think if they can find a nice middle ground it would be perfect… so long as they fix the elites and make them look less like sick toads and more like the Sangheili they were.
Artistically H3 wins.Detail wise H4 wins.So kind of hard to decide indefinitely since both have points that can liked and disliked. So i say, mix them up.Joking of course. We may see much greater detail and artistic values in H5 due to the better hardware in the 720.
Halo 3 was the greatest game of all time in my eyes. There is no other game I ever played more than Halo 3. That being said, for Halo 5 to go BACK to Halo 3’s cartoon graphics would be a big step BACKWARDS. Halo 5 will be launching with the Xbox 720 in 2014 and could very well be the best looking game of all time (until Halo 6 of course!) Anyways I totally disagree with you but respect your opinion.
I like the more realistic and gritty spartan models like in Halo 2 in Halo: Reach. I’d hope to return to that, especially considering that Halo 5 is to be the darkest Halo.
I don’t think that 343i needs to work too hard on the graphics, just polish up some textures. For Halo 4 they made sure to emphasize their graphics and “Oooh, do you see how shiny that is? How bright THAT IS?”.

There’s no way in flood infested high charity Halo 5 is launching in 2014.
yes i love the way h3 looked… i have been saying forever that i feel the graphics are going in the wrong direction…
h3 looked so clean and nice, montages were huge back in the day cause people made awesome looking montages and it worked so well with how h3 looked… reach and h4 are just bulky and clunky and montages just dont grasp me like they did in h3…
cant say it enough, h3 looked beautiful, it truely was as pefect as halo has ever been…
its like halo and gears just straight up switched, has anyone else noticed this?
gears used to look “life like” and real gory and awesome, and now its all cartoony lookin
halo used to be “cartoony” looking and now its tryin to be all “Life like”
i think both games should go back to the way they previously were… the more colorful artistic style belongs in halo and the grity “life like” belongs in gears…
when i say “cartoony” i dont mean literally like a cartoon, you know what h3 looked like and you know what i mean
Halo 3 was very appealing to look at. It was SO bright and colourful.
I wouldn’t say it was like a cartoon, it just looked cleaner and more refined. I think the textures and graphics in Reach/H4 are very rough and gritty, and I like them, but I’d take Halo 3’s graphics over what we have now any day of the week.
Halo Reach was my first Halo game. Then I went to try Halo 3. While the game play might be good, what turned me off Halo 3 very quickly was the “cartoon” or, if you like, ""artistic look. Graphically, it was dinosaur material. I didn’t like it and still don’t. In terms of hearing stories from your parents or grandparents, you know, back in our day…well, that’s the feeling/image I have of Halo 3.
Saying that Halo 4 lacks bright colors is ridiculous. The Spartans in multiplayer are so bright that they literally glow. How bright are we trying to go?
I used to think everything should go back to the way it used to be in Halo 2. Basic textures etc… The fact is… times change, engines change, things become more realistic, etc…
You have to let go of the past. The artistic styles are not going to return. Every game will have it’s own flavor. Unless of couse it’s a CoD game. Then the graphics remain exactly the same for 5 straight titles.
I laugh at people who want the game to look realistic.
The year is 25??, earth has united under one government, aliens with huge ships want to commit mass genocide on humans, ancient forerunners created the galaxy, and you want the game to look realistic? lol! The game itself isnt even real, why make it look realistic? Halo’s ce-3 did it right with the artsy/creative approach.
Realism is for modern day shooters like battlefield and cod.

What made you change?
I still remember that topic about Halo 4 having extra noise.
This is most evident in the Midnight Broadsword run. The colors are so similar it’s hard to tell if you’re going through a gap or about to crash into a wall.
Also, in Reach, Anniversary, and Halo 4, when you’re looking for weapons on the ground, it’s significantly harder to spot them compared to previous games.
Not to mention how in CE, it was very easy to tell where your pistol shots landed while in Anniversary, it’s much harder. Halo 4 has corrected this issue with the DMR and BR smoke contrail but it’s still noticeable with the Pistol and Carbine.
Whatever happened to wavy shield lines that made it easy to distinguish the strength of Elite shielding? This is noticeably absent with Knights.
And of course, the lack of Hunter blood when you melee them in their weak spot. Am I supposed to feel like I’m hitting a huge non-living pillar? I could have sworn Spartans were able to severely cripple or kill a Hunter in that location.
The distribution of detail is quite sub-par compared to previous Halo games.
