For those of you who don’t know this, Respawn Entertainment is a developing company founded by the Jason West and Vince Zampella, the creators of the Call of Duty franchise. They were fired from their positions at Infinity Ward a little after MW2’s launch. So these guys went to EA and formed a studio under EA called Respawn Entertainment.
Anyway, these guys were and still are planning a “Halo Killer”, which is a term plenty of studios have dubbed their games, but of course, never really lived up to that name. But this time, I think we have something to finally worry about. These guys know the COD Formula that over twenty million people continuously love in and out. So they know how to make a shooter that today’s audiences can and I assure you, will get hooked on. I strongly believe that this game will be the Call of Duty killer, because after all, its creators are making it a point to destroy the monster they created. But the problem is, if this is a expertly made Sci-Fi game as well, it will drag Halo into the mix and destroy it. But how could a Sci-Fi arcade shooter take out a series with such unique gameplay like Halo? Well 343 on the other hand, is aiming directly at Call of Duty with their new additions to Halo(Which I don’t find necessarily bad, they can actually be healthy for the franchise), but if 343 strays away from Halo’s winning and DIFFERENT formula, Respawn will step all over Halo 4 and the Reclaimer Trilogy(If the trilogy keeps the changes that may or may not turn out bad).
I don’t want Halo to die, and I don’t believe it deserves to be targeted by developers. It’s a unique experience, unlike any other on the market and I want it to stay that way. But if Halo loses its unique qualities that plenty of players still enjoy and tries to copy Call of Duty’s traits, it will be killed by that franchise’s creators at Respawn Entertainment. But I know for a fact that loyal Halo fans will stick with Halo 4, or the entire Reclaimer Trilogy for that matter, till the end. I know I sure as hell will. I just hope 343 really knows what they’re doing.
I think its stupid that they have to go out of their way to say i want to get rid of Halo etc. I mean what happened to competition? There are more than enough gamers in the world to play all games. Let COD players have COD Halo Players have Halo and Wahtever Halokiller this is, let them have that. TLDR, Who cares? ill still play ferverently.
also, the CoD formula isn’t hard to figure out, its pretty simple and i bet you that any game developer out there knows what it is, and yet, they haven’t managed to beat CoD or halo , reach is the fault of it being self destructive…
Meh, games like COD became popular not because of their “winning design” but because they existed at a time and place in console history that found such a game wanting. Granted the devs had to have made the game to fit into that social niche but the fact remains that the people were ready to accept Modern Warfare before MW was ever made. And if not for that game, it would have been another around the same niche (ex. Medal of Honor) with only minor deviations on the grand scheme.
As such respawn can’t purposefully design a Halo killer (no more than every other dev whose tried) because no one has the where with all to so expertly work the social fabric of the market to supplant someone else’s niche through direct competition; to replace them so entirely that the practical effect is murder. Hell, Battlefield is actively trying to do that with COD and the best they can do is make an alternative which could, conceivably, take center stage but only if the mass taste happens to evolve in that direction.
If these are the former members of I.W. then I doubt their game will be expertly made. I highly doubt Halo will be killed of. As long as Halo fans still play!
Guerrilla Games, the makers of Killzone, tried sayign their games were “Halo Killers”…we know that didn’t happen. Unless Respawn’s games are really good, I doubt that’ll happen too.
Although I’m genuinely intrigued at what Respawn Entertainment has up their sleeves, I think it’s a huge mistake to be targeting another game franchise to “bring it down”.
Just saying this, and this applies to any game in general:
The only way a game to “kill” a game is to become a dev of the game itself and drive the players away from it. Then do it again on its sequel if it still have any life left from the first one.
I agree completely, but I think they’re just trying to kill their own baby, Call of Duty - “Halo Killer” may just be a way to present it to EA/Activision to get funded.
After all, Halo is probably the biggest non-Activision and EA shooter on the console market, so of course Activision and EA want to destroy it. They want to own all of the top spots. Sadly, money doesn’t buy happiness or a good game. I expect no more than a shooter in the future with CoD elements like Black Ops 2/Killzone/Battlefield 2142.
Think about it - EA and Activision own the biggest MMSes* on the market currently, and they want to get Halo off the table. It’s not more than a marketing scheme, most likely to backfire on themselves. It’s pretty much a ticking time bomb, especially by not showing it at E3.

> *MMS(es) = Modern Military Shooter(s)
That’s probably what’s going to happen and that would be hillarious!
