So I’m rerreading all the books again (such a great time) and am currently rereading The Flood. Something I notice is that people love the other books (except for Kilo Five of course) and The Flood often gets overlooked. Part of me gets it, a good chunk of it is just telling the story of CE on page which people can see as redundant. However, John shows more of his personality in the book than he does in the game, we see he talks some more and we see how he thinks. Also, I love the other characters in the story, Keyes, Silva, McKay, Keyes, ect. While John still is the main hero, it’s nice to see other characters fleshed out. I know people don’t like to talk about this book as much, but reading it a 3rd time, I’m really digging it again. What is the rest of the fanbase’s thoughts on the book?
Some of the characterization of Chief felt kind of off to me, but I enjoyed reading about what happened to the other crew aboard the Pillar of Autumn.
Oh yes, the Flood.
Personally Im convinced the parts with Chief are non-canon while the stuff that DOESNT involve him are.
I’m in the process of reading it so far it’s great!
I enjoyed The Flood, but it’s definitely lower on my list. Especially when read in quick succession with The Fall of Reach, First Strike, and Ghosts of Onyx. My favorite part is reading all of the stuff that goes on in between the levels of Halo CE, it just helps it feel like a more complete story.

The way I see it is that what we play is only a part of John’s story on Installation 04. Maybe that’s just me.
The Chief bits were a horrible rehash of the game - everything else, especially the ODST storyline, was absolutely sublime.

Well, what I meant was what they did before they all, well, you know, died.
It’s my favorite book. Personally none of the other characters besides John, Cortana, Rtas and the arbiter are interesting. Everything else was Boring character development for human forces, very dull to read about. The flood was great for showing more of what the chief was thinking during parts of Halo CE. I wish they continued this for the games, I’d love to read a more in death telling of Halo 2 through Arbiter and Company, as well as Chief’s. The extra story telling we don’t get to see is the best, as long as it’s directly related to the games. Adaptations of the games to book like the flood are definitely needed.
