I am writing a fanfiction and I am trying to determine if the Arrays could be reprogrammed to target specific life forms (Sangheili, Forerunner, etc.). I know, after limited research, that they can be modified to target various lifeforms based upon their nervous complexity, but I am uncertain if that complexity can extend down to a single species. Where would these modifications take place? My research came from Halopedia. I am looking to stay as close to canon as possible, but I can take some literary liberties if need be.
Be nice to each other in the comments and be respectful of other ideas, even if you don’t agree with them.

Im not sure if such precision is possible.
Even if it werent the extinction or widescale destruction of a sentient species is a crime of the highest proportions.
The Halos were built to exterminate life across the galaxy.
Using a Halo against one species is like using Tsar Bomba against one individual. Its absurd in every sense. A gross use of destructive power.
Just throw some sciencey words together and come up with something logical.
Also, depending on the race, you could look up at subtle differences between them and the others. For instance, in Mass Effect, the Turians and Quarians are dextro-something-something (I can’t recall the term), basically meaning they can’t eat the same food as the rest of the galaxy.
Finding something like that would make your reasoning and explanation behind the Halo’s firing mechanism more believable.
A potential work around might be a local firing of one ring. If you wanted to take out a certain species, send the ring to their homeworld and target their neural complexity. That way you’ll get the highest concentration of them with the least collateral damage. If you’re writing a story that collateral damage would actually be quite an interesting thing to explore. For example, if I want to kill the Elites I could send a ring to Sanghelios and target their neural complexity as closely as possible. In doing so, I’d have to wrestle with the fact that I’m killing any other species with the same complexity in a 25,000 light year radius, including other humans.
