We had this very same situation with the rocket launcher in Halo 5. I thought there would be no way 343 would make the same mistake but, apparently I was wrong. I don’t mind the new shotgun, but it should N0T replace the og shotgun. If anything just make it a different shotgun to use Al0ngSide the og Pump-Action shotgun. And I know they said “iT’s NoT neCesSaRiLy rEpLaciNg iT, tHe otHeR shoTguN jusT isN’t iN thE gAmE RigHt n0w.” But that’s BS. It should be in the game AT LAUNCH and be apart of the sandbox from the get go so the campaign can be designed around it rather than being artificially added in an update, if you know what I mean.
Given how insanely ugly the OG shotgun has become, I honestly don’t mind it being replaced. That said, since the bulldog isn’t 1-shot kill, anyone using it is gonna be trounced by swords and hammers in multiplayer.
I had no problem with the new rocket launcher in Halo 5. I also have no problem with the new shotgun showcased in the Infinite Demo. The shotgun changed substantially between Halo: CE, 2, and 3 - with minor changes between 3, Reach, 4, and 5. I’m okay with another change, especially since I’m sure the OG shotgun will reappear in some fashion at some point in Infinite.
I agree that I wish it was just an addition instead of a temporary replacement, same with the pistol. That said it is coming later so it’s not that big of a deal to me. They need to upgrade the sound though, it sounds so flat.
I honestly don’t mind the classic shotgun being replaced it mixes the combat up and keeps it from being stale because the shotgun has been about the same from 3-5 with CE having the most damage and H2 having the least. It will mess with the gravity hammer and sword counter but you can pump out more shots unlike the classic shotgun. I’m down for a replacement as long as it holds up or surpasses the olds standards and it’s something new to look forward to in the sandbox.
The classic Halo shotgun is so iconic and satisfying to use, I’d be very dissappointed if they removed it completely.
Oh cmooon! We haven’t even seen the “Classic shotgun” since Reach, or even ODST if you don’t count the slight redesign. Thats 10 years. At least this shotgun is heaps better then the shapeless, weird design of Halo 4 and 5’s shotty.
The Halo shotgun has been changed since Reach with the increased range. If anything this is sort of reverting back to the OG just a different skin.
Regardless im fine with new. I personally don’t think we will ever get a new Halo game that compares to the old one if they go classic. With that being said go new
Counter-offer. Just make it semi-auto and make it truly distinct from the old shotgun.
While I do think that folks are probably a bit too hard on the bulldog, I still understand the frustration. It was the same problem I had with the Halo 5 rocket launcher. I don’t think it was a bad design per se, it was just a bad design for “rockets” in Halo. If it didn’t follow the traditional rocket design so closely in terms of gameplay and did its own thing, I don’t think as many folks would have had a problem with it.
Also even if I like the look of some of the older shotguns, the bulldog is far and away better looking than the Halo 4/5 monstrosity.

Not just the shotgun bit we need the Magnum back as well and at launch

I never tought I’d see a magnum and shotgun worse than H5’s. Even those would be better
Im actually really surprised by the outrage over this and the sidekick as a replacement. The assault rifle replacing the SMG from CE —> 2 was done before. Plus the magnum being way different from CE —> 2 was also a thing. In retrospect, I don’t think it really impacted my enjoyment of Halo 2.
Im actually glad they are switching the guns up because it will freshen things up, which is something this franchise desperately needs right now as a whole. IMO lets keep an open mind.
In my perfect world, the Infinite shotgun would just look like a next gen graphics version if the H3 shotty model.
The old shotgun not being in the game is a mistake if it isn’t lso available in multiplayer.

I’m a function over form guy, let’s think about the effect on the combat loop with higher rof weapons. The sidearm and shotty seem to want to encourage the up close and personal play style that earlier Halos did so well while letting every weapon in the sandbox have a role and a place.
Ce sandbox was simple and not oversaturated, infinite seems to want to go down a perks or upgrade system rather then multiple variants of the same weapon aka H5 (although I could be wrong)
These weapons are being designed in conjunction with the sprint clamber slide grapple mechanics in mind that classic halo never had to contend with.
Sure they could have a more haloesk reskin and sound but end of the day, I’m liking the thinking behind it the change I’m imagining being able to upgrade the shotty over time with a faster swap speed or quicker reload or higher damage ect (destiny lite)

throwing in new mechanics and then changing the entire game around it is even worse.
the shotgun after CE was pretty well balanced. It definetly did not add clutter.
the long reload times of the old shotgun was a core mechanic to it. reloading could be stoped at any shell.
rof does not equal quality. halo is not doom or quake.
adding a new weapon and cutting the old, especialy if the old functions fine, is not declutterering, but change for no reason.

From your comment, I’m thinking your very set in stone as to how you feel about the shotgun changes. Designing a sandbox around movement mechanics isn’t a new or even novel concept in gaming…,
Is the end product fun engaging and keeps a halo-Esk vibe. We won’t know till November but a shotgun and sidearm change will hardly break the immersion for most.
I had the same argument when they replaced the Plasma rifle but things gotta carnage now and then to spice up the sandbox.

Its a replacement for sure.
But here is my perspective. I am more content with this replacement than that replacement because I do believe this gives the shotgun a new function which is the faster reload. The rocket launcher on the other hand removed the functionality of the older one… which was 2 shots in a magazine. That and they removed its classical look which everyone loved.
Halo Ce’s shotgun in retrospect looks awful imo.
Halo 2 fixed it i think… halo 3 was ok… and then it got bad in 4 and 5. lol
There is only so much you can do to make that design look modern.
The rocket launcher on the other hand is just so much more appealing and unique in comparision.
As for the Magnum, i think there can be arguments made for why it should have stayed. But as for the shotgun id actually be fine with leaving the old one behind.
We’ll definitely be seeing more weapons later on that weren’t showcased in the sandbox. Perhaps some will replace the function that the old magnum and shotty had in older sandboxes. The weapons have been evolving from CE to 5, I don’t really see why Infinite has to have the exact same weapons as older games.

Did the Storm Rifle replacing the Plasma Rifle really spice up the sandbox, or did it dull it down?..
