So BR starts is supposed to be the most skillful and competitive way to play Halo. If skill is the true goal, wouldn’t we be better off using Carbines or DMRs? The Carbine requires more shots and a quicker trigger finger.
It’s also more accurate than the BR and is not susceptible (as far as I know) to bullet spread, which in turn reduces the randomness of the weapon.
Truth be told there will never be a perfect weapon I also feel the fire rate would need to have some sort of limit however, any weapon that is semi auto already has the issue that people with modded controllers or even now people who have pro/elite controllers will always be at and advantage as they don’t have to pull the trigger as far in the first place now to fire a shot as someone who uses a standard controller.
Two things worth noting:
-
People like human weapons. Light rifle starts were unequivocally the best starts for competitive play in Halo 4, but we still had BR starts. It’s silly, but it’s what happens.
-
The carbines rapid rate of fire means it doesn’t punish missing nearly as much as a weapon with a slower rate of fire would. The DMR, yes would be better than the BR for competitive starts. However the DMR also has a far greater range and tends not to mesh with the sandbox as well as the BR in terms of advantages. In Halo CE the magnum with its long ranged and high rate of fire worked because it was difficult to use and utilized slow moving projectiles. As Human Halo weapons are now predominantly now hitscan, that same weapon formula doesn’t work.
I like the carbine, but I don’t think it’s the best choice for a starting weapon.

So to make the BR more skillful, it would be best to increase it to 5sk? Or we could just have Lightrifle starts since it seems to function just like Halo 4.

No we just need a DMR with less range, like Silent said no one would buy into just for the simple fact that the main weapon was Alien and not Human.
Would be perfectly ok with this
I (personally) find precision starts to be more consistant and competitive

5sk BR was tried in H4 remember?
it didn’t work
4sk BR is perfect

I guess. I understand the whole Human weapon being more preferable thing but the hardcore competitive community wouldn’t even be willing to accept it even though it’s a greater test of skill?

Think it is obvious they won’t as for them BR starts is how it has always been even when the other weapons could have easily been chosen from the other games.

The only reason 4sk came back though was so it could match the DMR, 5sk would be fine but the BR would need a ROF buff.
Replace something that worked and people loved.
Hmm, I know that from somewhere.

So then there is definitely some heavy bias or nostalgia at work here xD Even when more skillful options are available they aren’t picked.

I agree to a point, in my opinion where the H4 weapon tuning failed is that it buffed everything around the DMR, instead of just nerfing the DMR
I still think a 5sk BR had a far too long TTK and this would be especially true when you factor in the buffed up auto weapons that now recieve bonus’ through ADS
I think we should all at least try using different precision weapons other than the BR as starting weapons. We have nothing to lose, and we might find the game more enjoyable with a certain weapon more than the BR. If not, we can always go back.

The world worked before electricity was in all of our houses too. It’s experimentation that helps push things forward, even if it fails.

Wait to play the game first
besides not everything has to be 4sk just increasing the ROF could be good enough if needed. Let’s all play it first though yeah rather than just basing everything off a little bit of gameplay we have seen.

Ohh right I am just afraid of change, you got me.
Lets replace the AR with Plasma Riffles too. Or replace AR starts with DMR/Carbine, we havent tried that yet.
And while we are at it we could replace the Gnasher with the Lupara and make Call of Duty a racing game.
What do we have to lose?
