Reminder: Halo 1 PC multiplayer still online

For those of you that have a dusty old CD sitting in a closet somewhere, this is a reminder that Halo Combat Evolved and Custom Edition multiplayer services are still up and running in 2019 thanks to Bungie! As an ex clan leader, the PC version of Halo Custom Edition has and will always have a special place in my nostalgic bits. I hope you guys enjoy this throw back to a bygone era while we wait for the upcoming projects related to this great franchise!

If you have Halo Combat Evolved (full CD):
Install the game as normal
Download the 1.10 patch from Bungie in the spoiler below
Move the 1.10 patch exe into the halo install folder
Run the patch

For Halo Custom Edition:
Install the game as normal (Install files from Halomaps linked below)
Download the 1.10 patch from Bungie in the spoiler below
Move the 1.10 patch exe into the halo install folder
Run the patch

Thats it! You can now play old school Halo multiplayer online.

NOTE: A CD KEY IS REQUIRED. While CD key checking has been disabled on most dedicated servers, a CD key is still required to install the game. Please source your keys responsibly.

Common issues:

Direct X DLL error:
Open the folder where you installed the game and find the ‘redist’ folder, run ‘dxwebsetup.exe’ inside

VC DLL error:
Download and install Visual C++ x86 redist package from 2010 from Microsoft (if you are on 64 bit windows, also install the x64 version but install it AFTER the x86 package!)

Cant see in game chat?
Open the folder where you installed the game and find the ‘redist’ folder, run ‘msxmlenu.exe’ inside

Black bars on sides?
Game runs in 800x600 mode by default, set your resolution via Settings > Video (1.10 patch gives access to higher resolutions than original game supported)

Bad FPS?
Game is locked to 30fps by default. Go to Settings > Video > and set ‘framerate’ to NO VSYNC

English 1.00 Custom Edition installer: http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=410
Custom Edition note: Custom map files can be obtained from hce.halomaps.org and may be required depending on what server you connect to. Custom Edition only installs the original maps by default.

To install new maps in Custom Edition:
Make sure game is closed
Download desired .map file from hce.halomaps.org
Drop into MAPS folder inside the folder where you installed CE
Restart game

Loved playing CE on PC, it was my first foray into Halo! Would love to jump back into some of the servers and see if i’ve still got it!

  1. hello can we launch our own servers like before and can random players join ? in halo custom edition…
  2. also i wanted to know i use halo custom edition and play on blood gulch will players on halo combat evolved be able to play or need to install both games ? and btw can anyone share cd iso for combat evolved i cant find it…

3 .i just bought entire mcc collection in hopes the game ui for multiplayer gonna be like this but it is not we cant select map we want to play on its all random not cool and annoying if i launch my own serer in blood gulch in MCC i waited for 20min to 30min random days in last 2 months i got no players at all . with halo ce in its prime we use to have 16 players in 2min.

  1. in MCC why do we need to wait for 16 players to join why not start game immediately like we use to have in original halo CE and players keep joining or going …that was awesome !

This game is awesome in originality
