It wasn’t just about competitive play, but also about fun. Now 343 focuses more on the competitive scene.
Hmm, do you mean like the 3 Fiesta playlists in H5 social and now Action Sack which was just added in the rotational and then next year it’s very likely ranked BTB will be removed or do you mean like the Turkey Day playlist or the social match composer in MCC?
No I don’t. By the time I got online and started playing everyone was so serious.
Always been about both
you seem to be forgetting all the stuff they do for social games, the existence of yap yap, the straight up race car as a warthog req, adding skulls like sputnik to halo ce and halo 2, the halo 5 forge additions like space whales, moa burger billboards, vehicle welding, leaving the weapon merging glitch, and the upcoming forge items in mcc’s reach forge like forklifts and the sabre.

Space whales?
The forklifts and sabres are mods.
I definition of fun is playing with friends and doing things like Zombies. Come on dude even in Social you could mess around with the Mongoose, the Elephant, play on Custom maps with a Star Destroyer, and play Fiesta.

timmy the space whale, props in halo 5 forge along with a crab and a pig. and there are plenty of other forge objects that were added for the fun of it like the dolls.
and as far as forge objects go, This says otherwise
It still is fun to me these days. All about how you play it was my take.

Cute. :3
Looks like I’ll have to get a Xbox One then.
I member. Which is why I mainly stick to BTB and SWAT since those are fun for me. Though I am hoping after Reach launches that they’ll bring a custom game browser like we have with Halo 5. I think more people would stick around and come back if they had a lot more options when it came to playing custom games and maps with others.
I know what you’re saying but it really comes down to what your goals are. The matchmaking is an issue and sometimes you get matched with people who are way better than you and then it’s no fun at all. Sometimes the matches are fine and then you can have a good time. Also, playing in a team makes it a lot more fun, even if you end up losing. That’s been my experience.
But it is also kind of a built-in flaw with games these days. Populations are so low after a year or so that the remaining people tend to be somewhat different than you average casual gamer. And then even more of the average people stop playing because they are not good enough to keep up and have a good time, so that narrows it down even further.

There’s also the part where people don’t play the very fun game modes. Those have less population than Team Slayer.
Still is fun. Fun is objective. This is bait.
You could also argue that the number of people quitting adds to the problem. I just played 5 games of social arena slayer. Three games I was sort of flung into as a replacement for someone who quit and each time we were already like 10 points behind, so it was like 20-30 or something when I came in. One of the games my team won. The other two we lost. The other two games I played were also one victory and one defeat but in each game people quit, once 2 and once 4 people. This type of behavior is not something that shows that people are there to “have a good time” but rather picking their matches depending on whether they think they can win to boost whatever commendation of K/D aim they are pursuing, leaving the rest of the team frustrated. That is by no definition fun and the attitude behind that surely is something that should be questioned.

Exactly.
It’s always been about both, and thats what makes it so great.
The sweaty tryhard guys (like myself) can go play a ranked MLG variant while others who don’t like that can go play action sack, BTB, infection, grifball, fiesta, etc.
In fact, I’d say the Halo games cater to casual play far more than they do competitive.
There’s no “casual” players.
That’s like saying there’s no competitive players.
