Remember way back when...?

Remember way back when you were a kid and you never heard the phrase “I’m not playing because there is no point.” never came up? Yeah me too. When you are a kid you don’t question the rules of Red Rover, and you don’t tell the fat kid that his hit box is too big and it is cheating… I lost something there in the metaphor but you get my point.

I am entirely too exhausted to really get into great detail here but you competitive shmucks (not all of you) that are telling me you don’t want to play because the games catering to casuals need to remember that casuals come first. Halo 4 is first and foremost a game, not a sport, like any game if you are meant to just have fun. If you are in it to win it then you are only spoiling it for yourselves when you lose… to me… because I am great.

Got a tad side tracked… The point is(see what I did there?), There doesn’t need to be a point to playing a game. If you’re only interested in being better then everyone else then everyone else wants you to stop. If you are there for your own personal sense of accomplishment then there are a whole slew of stats that can tell you when you are better and when you are worse.

In summation, Play the game for fun, competition is fun and all but it is after all a game and FUN is the only thing that really matters.

Also, any competitive player who is about to tear into me because you find being competitive “fun” you can tell me how fun it is next time you’re getting your butt kicked and are pulling your hair out…

When I was a kid, I played Halo CE because I liked guns and shooting things.

Some people play for fun and others play competively to make it fun. Just cause u dont doesnt make u right

Thats not actually why anyone gets mad at casuals…

Its the fact that casuals actually ruin the hobby for everyone including themselves and they don’t even know it.

When you get every single casual out there buying CoD, every other game starts becoming like CoD. By appeasing to the casuals you get nothing but homogenization. It makes gaming a bland samey experience all around.

But whatever, I just heard that ModernFPSWarfare200GameTheSequelTheReturn and the limited Rehashed Edition for $90 just came out. Who needs another good original game eh?

Now I just used CoD as an example because it is… after all, THE example. But there are many more for many other genres and games. I just don’t feel like writing a thesis on the entire Samey Samey Gamey Samey industry right now.

Ill throw three words out and bring this to a close, Resident Evil Six.

Peace out.

Your talking about the people calling out casuals, yet your calling out competitive players… Contradiction much?

wort ! wort ! wort !

The point is to have fun. Some people have fun different ways. When I was young I still played for the competition of Halo. I didn’t want to lose even if it was rockets on Prisoner (best games EVER!!!). My goal was to win and beat my friends in the process. Now it’s a larger scale with Live. I want to win. I want a challenge. Achieving that goal through teamwork and skill are what bring that satisfaction.

I REALLY want to play some rockets on Prisoner or Hang 'Em High now dangit!!!

Casuals don’t really know squat-dung about game mechanics though, casuals will play a game no matter what, simply because of the name. When a new Halo game comes out, tons of casuals will buy it for no other reason than it says “Halo” on the cover. Therefor, you might as well make the game for the hardcore fans because it is then a win-win. Competitive and veteran players get what they want (a good game) and the casuals get what they want (a box with “Halo” written on the front).

> Your talking about the people calling out casuals, yet your calling out competitive players… Contradiction much?

You know I see a lot of flawed logic there… first of all I’m not calling out competitive players for calling out casuals, I am telling them there are flaws that I see in their view point, IE it is a game, it is for fun, it is up to you to make it competitive not the game. Yes you can play competitively, if you enjoy it then please do so. NO, you are not entitled to competitive bells and whistles in your game. The game developer decides those things, Bungie gave you stuff, be thankful and be on your way because they did that as a courtesy to you. Does that mean 343i is obligated to give you all the same shiny toys? No.

hint for you.

You are just as casual as the majority of the population.

Do you play in tournaments? Didnt think so. You can call yourself competitive, but you are just a casual player like the rest of them/us.

You don’t have the slightest idea.

I’m too dignified to really demolish you publicly here. You should really do better in the future.

First and for most I would like to thank you for bringing your brain to a discussion. I tip my hat to you.

However I do believe your argument is flawed as competitive players are not as a whole harmless… When you have any population of people you have a sub population of idiots. When these idiots are competitive idiots there is a greater risk of a poisonous environment that sends casuals running away… 343i seems to have wanted to cut off that “I’m 50 so I’m better then you noobs” from the rest of the community. Yeah now we have upset competitive players but in the long run when Halo 5 and 6 come out those arguments will with any luck, diminish. Yeah in the business world you go for whatever makes you the most money but in 343i where basicly everyone’s a die hard fan, they tend to be a bit more picky about what type of people they want around, no matter the cost.

Amen, no truer words have been spoken.

Great post.

I miss those days where people would play video games for entertainment and treat it like it’s the Olympics. The original modern olympics used to be full of amateurs, and the original gaming community used to be mostly “causals”, then the Olympics are now just filled with the so-called “Superstars” at their particular sport, similar to how MLG act like the superstars at video games, and the things Olympic athletes and gamers from before Xbox Live/MLG, is that they have fun. The thing that Olympic athletes today (Atleast some of them to me, not all of them, but still…) and MLG players now seem to just take what they do way too seriously, they need to relax and have fun. Thats what video games were made for, to be used for fun and stress relief, even though sometimes in shooters and some other games have parts that make you want to throw your controller across the room.

No, I don’t consider myself a “casual” gamer at all. The strange and sad thing about Halo 4 though is that it actually forces you to be a casual player, because it has virtually no competitive support whatsoever, and not only that but it also has next to no technical settings customization.

I want to be able to change my FOV (can’t play with less than 90 degrees because it a) makes me squirmish and b) small FOV’s are bad because you can’t see much of your enviroment). I also greatly care about the aspect ratio, I like to play on 2.4:1 (CinemaScope) because playing on a 16:9 box just doesn’t cut it for me and makes the game feel less immersive somehow and is less visually pleasing. I’m from Australia, and we don’t have much tournament support over here, but if there was a Halo CE or 2 tournament within reasonable travel, I would certainly attend.

Those are examples of things that casuals have pretty much no idea about and don’t give a stuff about. As long as they can jump into a room, pick up a controller and swear with their mates as they blast away at aliens with big guns, they’re satisfied. Casuals generally have a pretty shallow idea of quality and just play the game because they want some cheap thrills and something to do in their spare time. When you cater for the lowest common denominator (casuals), everyone above them suffers. When you cater for the highest, everyone benefits. This can be said for almost all aspects of a game.
