We’re 7-9 months out from the game release and despite some obvious false starts, it’s time the community hype train started well and truly leaving the station. That said, we have to be very mindful of how many divisive topics still exist. I, for one, would like to try and avoid derailing it constantly with internecine arguments and hyperbolic threads that ‘minor feature x is going to ruin the game and kill the franchise’. Even positive threads like ‘what do you want to see?’ seem to break down into arguments that what one player wants, someone else doesn’t.
So I wanted to dial everything back a bit, try to strip the emotions away and take everyone back to basics of excitement about the game.
Let’s start with this: The E3 2018 announcement trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fmdb-KmlzD8&list=PLn5QvCoiY3w7IE5uVnu3S4ddnrNYiMk6s&index=14
Just take a moment to rewatch it. Even now, knowing it’s Halo, I still think back to my reaction at the time. I want everyone to do the same. I was playing Sea of Thieves with 8 other people at the time, fighting our first Megalodon. Most of us had the stream on in the background. We were just about to pull up to fight the Meg when I said something along the lines of ‘Wow, this looks amazing.’ We anchored the ship because everyone suddenly turned their attention to the stream. I sat spellbound at the pictures. I said to a Halo friend ‘that music sounds very familiar’. When we got the first shot of the marines, I said ‘could this be?’, and he said ‘Nah.’ Then we got that helmet shot. I’ve never been as energised for the franchise as I was in that moment. Blank canvas, so many possibilities.
So, rather than obsess over the minutiae of every little detail we have available. Let’s take a moment to embrace the unknown, the mystery, and the majesty of what Halo can be.
There will be plenty more information coming and we’re so lucky to have such a dedicated community team working to feed it to us.
What do you do when you need to take that step back and have that Halo excitement spark rekindled? Is it an old trailer like for me? Or a cutscene? Is it tearing up Multiplayer with your buddies in a warthog?
Contrary to OP’s opinions, I’m going to be a fuddy duddy and advise against over-hyping or a hype train. These things often lead to unreasonably high expectations that cannot be met. I still remember people hyping up some Reach trailers and things the characters did in them, speculating what it meant to the story. In the final game many of the scenes featured in trailers had been cut/altered. These kinds of things are pretty common in game development since games change so much from inception to published build.
It’s fine to be excited. It’s fine to enjoy trailers. But let’s perhaps try to keep our expectations in check? It may benefit us in the future
I hate to say it, but the hype train was derailed after the gameplay release last year. That was the chance for the first impression, which is so important. I am personally waiting for the multiplayer reveal to have my complete thoughts on the game.
I’m always hyped for a new halo. I wasn’t a fan of the graphics in last years trailer, but the gameplay looked amazing and that’s all that mattered to me. I’d say, to everyone who’s worried about this game, wait until June. Wait until E3 when we get more footage and multiplayer news to start the hype train. We’re 3 1/2 months away from E3, and were getting monthly news on infinite so we are getting more and more news on what the game will be like. Overall, I think the game will turn out to be amazing, despite the people picking out the few defects in their early beta build we saw last year.

This. I am excited for a new Halo game without a doubt. Right now, im just enjoying the ride leading up to launch. Leading up to the release of Halo 4 i threw myself into these forums CONSTANTLY discussing every element of 4 and eventually I was let down from the game because I personally overhyped the game along with many others.
Right now, im just playing MCC multiplayer, streaming, achievement hunting, and even making my own Halo videos. Its been a fun way to stay connected with Halo like i did Halo 4without getting my expectations too high. Don’t let me take away from your joy leading up to the game, just how I am personally preparing after being in this situation before
Sadly the old trailer from 2018 no longer excites me, nor does it rekindle any hype. My optimism after the 2018 engine demo trailer was dashed after last years gameplay reveal. I’m in agreement with Monitor Meds, I’ll also be a fuddy duddy and advise against over hyping or a hype train. I’ll remain hopeful but keep my expectations well in check.

That is a totally fair and valid approach too. I’ve maybe just found myself jaded by negativity recently and wanted to reinject a positive viewpoint. There’s still so much we don’t know and that’s actually exciting too. Yes the 2018 trailer was an Engine demo more than a game demo and yes it does need that pinch of salt, but it would still be a hard heart not to be blown away all over again.
I presume you’re Cover My Meds? If so sood to reconnect buddy!

With every large bit of info we get on multiplayer it pulls me back in for a week or two before that feeling disappears from lack of more concrete info. Every update we get regarding single player just kind of goes in one ear and out the other. No matter what they do with this campaign I’ll most likely have the same opinion I have about every Halo campaign. “It’s ok.”
In summary, the only thing that generates hype for me is multiplayer news. I have no expectations for the game outside of what 343 shows me and the longer they take to pump out substantial news about multiplayer the less I think about Halo Infinite. Less like a hype train and more like a hype golf cart. Small tank of gas.

This is pretty much my opinion in a nutshell

Entirely fair. Hope you enjoyed the Ask343 event recently with Quinn from the Sandbox team. Lots of juicy info there and I was loving it.

I hate to say it, but we won’t be getting multiplayer news until June (E3) and then probably some more in the later summer. I wish they could show us now but I guess they really want everything to be ready and amazing so that it can “wow” us when we see it.
The only time my hype toned down was when they announced the delay. Other than that I think about Infinite at least once a day lol Can’t wait. This wait has felt surreal at this point considering we’re used to only waiting half the time max.

Amen my brother. I didn’t even mind the delay because I want infinite to be that rare thing in modern games releases: smooth! Taking the extra time to get it right must have been an impossibly hard decision, but it’s undoubtedly the right one.

It’s definitely the right choice from the sounds of it. I was just disappointed at the time because I had been playing Apex for so long (and still am) and I was VERY READY for a good arena shooter to finally come out only to learn I gotta wait another year. The year leading up to the initial release date was excruciating enough lol Oh well, better to have a solid game at launch later than a broken one that wasn’t ready earlier.

So: all aboard the hype train again then https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/news/inside-infinite-february-2021?
Honestly, every piece of news I get about Halo Infinite gets me more and more excited. I’m not crazy, I don’t expect this to live up to Halo 3 (My personal favorite) but I expect it to get pretty darn close. The monthly “Inside Infinite’s” have done nothing but show me Infinite is headed in the direction I want it to head into. Yes, I was pretty let down from last years gameplay reveal, but this and previous months ii has gotten my hype back up and running and fully operational. Now i’m playing the waiting game with Multiplayer news. Really banking on E3 (Or a similar Xbox presser) to get the party started on that front. My one big concern for infinite now is no longer the graphics, and the story and gameplay always seemed real solid. Its the Maps I’m worried about, that is truly the one thing that could bring down Halo Infinite for me. But for now, i’m positive, i’m excited and I’m eagerly waiting for more

Yeah the MP side is what we still need to hear more on, but given the talk last year that they may split them I get the sense that may be the bit which was lagging behind (given the post-MCC ‘we’ll never not do a Beta again’ yet by the end of July no sign of one). To be honest, even though i know the MP side (especially being F2P) is where a game’s day-to-day bread and butter longevity lies, I don’t really mind so much about the MP pre-launch as it’s not what makes me play Halo. I wasn’t a fan of Reach MP, I was even less a fan of Halo 4’s, yet those are still two Halo games that I truly really enjoyed, whereas Halo 5 has very solid MP (certain gameplay elements aside) but by comparison I’m far more meh about it.
