Reintroducing Equipment

I was playing Halo 5 last night, using splinter grenades as an area denial tool and a lightbulb went off: I think a successful way to reintroduce Equipment into Infinite would be to treat them the same way we handle grenades.

The splinter grenade almost functions like a piece of equipment, so why couldn’t we reintroduce the power drain or bubble shield as map pick-ups, once acquired an icon appears beside your grenades, and effectively gameplay controls act the same way as grenades: D-pad to cycle grenades and equipment, L Trigger to use etc.

I know game decisions like this have already been decided, I just enjoy playing armchair game designer. So am I out to lunch or would this be a successful way to reintroduce Equipment into Infinite?

Halo 3 was definitely the most successful game, and I haven’t heard any complaints about Equipment at all ever since it was introduced. Bringing it back could definitely be very strong and would be an incredible decision for the game, but it could also complicate the game and make it far harder for casuals to cash in and play without feeling clueless where to find the said equipments on each map while in matchmaking.I wouldn’t say its much of a problem, but I am aware that they did replace Equipment with Halo Reach’s and 4’s Spartan Abilities, to cater to a casual audience and oversimplify the system of using outside tools to fight in battle.

You’re right and I do remember the transition from equipment to abilities. It was the end of ‘classic Halo’.

I don’t think we should go crazy with equipment though, maybe limiting them to 1 or 2 per map (more on BTB). I think even first time Halo players could manage that.

I think these are things 343 could even add to Infinite during it’s lifespan to spice things up every now and then. A new piece of equipment could entirely change the dynamic of a map.

I don’t like equipment, one of the things I don’t like about H3. I’d rather they not come back.

Treating equipment as grenades? Honestly doesn’t sound that bad. That could open up the option to some interesting types of equipment too, and some of the old ones can be translated to a type of grenade easily like the flare. Plus we’d see the reintroduction of an old concept but It’d be different enough to keep infinite unique.

This could also apply to armor abilities. Instead of attaching it to the player attach it to the environment. This way it is a power-up. Kind of like what they did with the jet pack in Team Hardcore on Halo Reach.

I didn’t mind equipment but it was very random and hard to keep track of. Can easily throw off players with the level of randomness especially in more competitive settings. I’m open to seeing it return though.

I think that randomness it what made it fun, it was like keeping a little trick up your sleeve. Nothing was more satisfying than blocking a rocket with a portable shield you threw out at the last second, or dropping a grav lift in front on a vehicle then whamming it with a gravity hammer.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of equipment, if it ever did return I’d prefer it serve more of a casual role, tripmines & gravity lifts as oppose to bubble shields & energy drains.
