Regret, regret, regret (A what if story)

Just a story I made one night when sleep evaded me. How would halo turn out if Regret had lived past his namesake mission? May continue depending on feedback.

Chapter one

Spec Ops Commander Rtas 'Vadumee listened to the Covenant battlenet as his fleet of phantoms descended down to the holy ring. Hundreds of phantoms flew alongside his own, all trying to save the noble hierarch Regret. The humans and the demon had arrived at this location thanks to one of their primitive vessels trailing Regret after he left their homeworld. The foul creature had slain all in its path in the goal of slaying Regret himself. 'Vadumee would not allow this to pass.

“Commander, we are five units out,” the pilot reported as clouds raced by on screen, revealing the distant forerunner structures below. Closer however was the assault carrier Solemn Promise, the vessel Regret had arrived in.

“Excellent pilot,” 'Vadumee commented before his co-pilot chimed in,

“Hail from High Charity commander, private channel,” 'Vadumee nodded and switched stations.

“Commander Rtas 'Vadumee,” the voice of Truth echoed in his ear. “Do withdraw your phantoms to a safe distance as I have ordered the Solemn Promise to cleanse the temple of this heresy.” 'Vadumee was speechless, fire on the temple, with Regret inside? As if peering into his mind, Truth continued, “It is too late for Regret commander, he will be avenged.”

“Noble hierarch, we are close to the dropzone now, if you only give us some ti-”

“NO COMMANDER!” The sudden outburst caused 'Vadumee to wince. Likely realizing his tempter, Truth continuted in a quieter tone. “We can not risk this creature to escape, to lay waste to another ring. My orders remain, do you understand?”

Vadumee was silent, weighing his options. He could pull his ships back, leave Regret to his fate at the demons hands as punishment for his brash actions on the human homeworld. Perhaps that’s what Truth had in mind? His thoughts however trailed back to the oath all covenant gave. That he had given himself so many years ago. Thou in faith will keep us safe, whilst we find the path. His decision was made.

“I am sorry hierarch, but it is our duty.” For a moment there was utter silence.

“YOU DARE GO AGAINST THE DIRECT ORDER OF A HIERARCH COMMANDER 'VADUMEE!?” Truth bellowed into the earpiece. 'Vadumee did not answer, instead switching back to the mission battlenet.

“Hail the Solemn Promise, tell them to give us some time to try to save the Regret.” The co-pilot nodded as he obeyed his orders. The next three units were tense as the first phantoms finally began to slow as their troops prepared their weapons.

“Commander, Solemn Promise will give us ten units before they comply with Truth’s orders,” the co-pilot commented, 'Vadumee nodded as he entered the troop bay.

“Warriors, today we slay the demon who destroyed the first sacred ring, who now seeks the life of our hierarch. We will bring glory to our bloodlines and honor to the Covenant!” A cheer rose from his soldiers, along with the rest of the fleet.

“Prepare to disembark, we have arrived,” the pilot spoke as the phantom came to a stop and the gravity lift activated. 'Vadumee jumped out and ignited his sword, leading the charge of dozens.
