Regarding the Hornet

People love this vehicle and you see people asking for it in Halo 5 on here all the time.

I have to ask though, do people want it back because of what it provides to the vehicle sandbox or do they want it back just because it was in the old games and for the sake of having a human air vehicle?

I remember using the Hornet in Halo 3 and being very frustrated with how weak/inaccurate the chain gun was, even in close range against moving targets. As for having passengers, it’s pretty neat but loading up with teammates isn’t exactly the most ideal strategy unless it’s CTF or your passenger has a Rocket Launcher or Splaser. Passengers often die very quickly while having absolutely no way to defend themselves, seeing as most weapons are useless while riding shotgun and any damage to the vehicle means damage to any passengers as well. Don’t get me wrong, it has it’s uses, it just isn’t practical at all for most situations.

The Hornet itself doesn’t provide anything really substantial that the Phaeton doesn’t. The Phaeton is actually far superior to the Hornet from the looks of all the videos. Although, having a UNSC air vehicle be the “Warthog of the skies” is really interesting to me. I’d really like to see a vehicle that requires a partner for firing while the pilot focuses solely on flying because it would encourage teamwork and separate skills, something that the Hornet never really took off on.

Probably because people recognize that in any military, you would need an air presence and they are wondering why they haven’t seen any in the games yet.

I would like to see one purely for varieties sake…

I would personally prefer the Reach Falcon. Loved that thing

I think that the Falcon should return and not the Hornet. The Falcon has two spots on the side for passengers like the Hornet, but with the Falcon, those two passengers get mounted machine guns to use as air support. The Falcon also has a speed boost over time that makes it move pretty quickly. The Falcon is way easier to control than the Hornet was in Halo 3, though 343 did improve on the controls in H2A. I never used the Falcon much in Reach since I didn’t play BTB much or anything so I’m not sure if the interior seating could be used to transport teammates, but that’s another plus compared to the Hornet. Overall, I think the Falcon is the better vehicle out of the two and should be the main UNSC aerial vehicle in multiplayer (assuming there’s absolutely no chance that Pelicans will be in the final game, but honestly, I would see Pelicans as more of the “Scorpions of the Sky”)

Why can we just not have an Apache with a Haloish theme to it!!!

We do, it’s called the Pelican. Introduced in Halo 4, also going to appear in Halo 5: Guardians. Unlike it’s predecessor it does not look aerodynamic for -Yoink-, seriously it’s so -Yoinking!- ugly, why did they keep that design. They could’ve gone with the one from Halo 2: anniversary, I mean they made a whole new rendered design of the Pelican but they used the assets and design from Halo 4 for the warthog… wtf?

EDIT: Mini-rant, sorry. I’m just not a fan of the new Pelican design. It’s just… it’s SO ugly!!

I don’t know the Pelican doesn’t seem very Apache like to me, It is too slow imo and not very good in terms of maneuverability plus I want actual blades on my aircraft for flight not thrusters

Sorry dude, I was thinking of the Hind not the Apache… But I really don’t want a Apache in Halo either, not that kind of a Helicopter. The Falcon would be have a welcome return, not the Apache

Fair enough :), I don’t mind the Falcon but it either relied on getting a decent pilot or piloting the vehicle itself and hoping for some decent gunners plus it was kind of a free triple kill to splaser user.

Reach Falcon is way better.

You act like the Hornet can’t be improved in machine gun accuracy, flying controls, etc. between titles… Look at the unexpected route Halo 5 took with the Banshee, they gave it shields to help it resist more damage. You never know what they might do to balance vehicles, and the Hornet has plenty of potential to be rebalanced in a way that works with the rest of the vehicle sandbox.

The Hornet is far superior to the Phaeton from its passenger seats alone. It makes the vehicle far more team oriented for games like CTF and Assault. Not even the Falcon could transport objective holders, and even if the campaign version “theoretically” could, holding 5 players in an easily destructible vehicle such as that is just a bad idea.

I’d even argue that the Phaeton is OP because it can potentially dodge Splazer shots and rockets using it’s side thrust. That’s one of the reasons why Reach’s banshee was so OP, the evasive maneuvers were unrealistically and unfairly fast.

I’m not acting like anything. I’m just looking at things for what they are, not what they could have been with tweaks.

If 343i added something like that in people’d be like “ewww it looks like a generic military attack chopper that was copied from Cod”

Well that’s a very shallow way of looking at things. If 343 thought like you, we probably wouldn’t have sprint in Halo 5 because it clearly didn’t work in Halo 4. Not like I’d complain, but judging by your posting history, I’d say that you wouldn’t be too thrilled if they made that decision if 343 removed it “because they’re looking at it for what it is, not what it could be with tweaks”.

I’m not opposed to getting tweaks to make stuff better, I’m just analyzing the Hornet as it actually was and saying how it didn’t work too well.

It’d be fine to be honest everyone always say Halo copied COD for everything even if it doesn’t so one more little thing wouldn’t hurt.

No matter what they do, people will still do that - if even only just to spite the people who do enjoy it.

I used to do “secret missions” with my friends with the Hornet. In Forge, I would pick them up, drop them somewhere, and pick them up later, and drop them, and I was crying out of laughter. I wasn’t even drunk. There wasn’t any objective to this. I was litteraly just dropping off a Hornet and I thought it was so cool !

Now I’m an adult, lol.

I didn’t think Halo 4’s banshee worked that well either. It was basically Reach’s Banshee ported over with it’s speed reduced. But it looks a lot faster in Halo 5 now, they changed the design and gave it shields to prevent it from dying from 2-3 clips of DMR/BR. That was no small change to the vehicle by any means. I don’t see why the Hornet would be any exception, other than maybe you personally disliking it.

Like I said earlier, I’m not a fan of sprint, but I’m not going to deny they tried improving it.

Because we want a UNSC air vehicle? How is it that hard to understand?
