Just one word… AMEN

RPG elements…

Rewarding exploration…

Oh shii that sounds like the upgrade system from DOOM 2016. In that game, earning upgrade points was tied to level exploration. You could upgrade faster by finding secrets, upgrade points, etc. in order to unlock new abilities or improve them.

It turned out great for DOOM, because id Software did it well. Their creative director, Hugo, knew the trick was to employ “ruthless efficiency”. If a feature was to be implemented, it should be done without any unnecessary fuss. Clarity in design, knowing 100% what you’re aiming for. Similar to what Hardy LeBel did with Halo CE multiplayer.

I agree. DOOM 2016 was amazing. One of the best games of the decade. The problem here is that I don’t think 343 can pull it off. They don’t have a particularly clear idea of what Halo is, and so when they add foreign elements to it they do it very clumsily. They need to focus on Halo, not on what other games are doing.

I would tend to agree, even though I love 4 and 5 just as much as the original trilogy but I won’t get into a debate about that here. However, I was around for Gears 4’s launch and it did not get a very good reception from what I recall. At least, compared to the earlier games. People were complaining about the lack of innovation. Now, they’re already complaining about too much innovation and “-Yoink!- bullcrap” infesting Gears 5, even though it perfectly suits the story line we’ve been given so far. For Halo, going back to the roots now after such a long time should definitely be the right move, but it’s really just a no win scenario.

Yeah, I see where you’re coming from. However, when a new studio takes the lead in an established franchise, I think it’s important to understand and deliver the core experience that the game has always been based upon. I think The Coalition made the right move with Gears 4, and at the very least it didn’t split the community. And I think the percentage of people complaining about that sort of stuff in Gears 5 is very low - just people who don’t like female leads in games, tv and movies. It’s not a valid criticism like it was in Battlefield V, where there were very good reasons for not wanting women in the game. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is that although Gears 4 wasn’t ground-breaking, at least it wasn’t game-breaking and community-shattering like Halo 4 was. And that is very healthy for the longevity of the Gears of War franchise.

Yeah you’re right. I guess some people will always complain whenever a franchise swaps studios, even if that studio delivers a game which (in my opinion at least) is on par with the earlier games. And that backlash was definitely nowhere near Halo 4 levels. So you’re right. Here’s hoping to an amazing Gears 5 that shuts up the haters!

And to an amazing Halo: Infinite that goes back to Halo’s roots and makes everyone in the community stop hating each other!

343 seems to fit the description of the covenant in terms of technology they imitate but don’t innovate. Halo has never been a rpg game and if they change it and go with the current rpg trend then that will be a huge mistake imo

Exactly!
