Halo 4 seems to have a ton of repetitive weapons. Now this isn’t a bad thing per se. When I heard Frankie talk about how the BR is more mid-range than the DMR, I realized it was a solution to the range gap problem Halo Reach tried to fix by poorly mimicking Counter-Strike.
Unfortunately, the weapons seem rather unoriginal. Which is sad when you look at the new Promethean weapons like the light rifle. The light rifle is an alien weapon with the human functionality of having a switchable burst firing mode, and a single shot mode when viewed through the sight. That’s it. It’s a human weapon with orange bullets and a different skin. There is nothing original about it besides it’s design and damage.
Now that is not a problem with all of the Promethean weapons. The bolt pistol gives a new twist to the plasma pistol. In Halo 1 and Halo Reach the plasma pistol’s secondary fire did more health damage. This is taken to an extreme with the bolt pistol. While not entirely original, the idea is different enough in execution and allows for a combination of the strong magnum/pistol of olde and the missing mauler (with more range and a charge).
I can continue to speak on how the functionality of certain weapons is more effective in creating the illusion of individuality, and how some weapons are less effective, but the point is clear. Some weapons should have been revised long ago. Since the game is basically complete, it is doubtful change will occur, but 343i can at least contemplate how to make more distinct weapons in the future.

It’s a BR that changes to a DMR. Of course, it’s nowhere near as redundant as having two single shot weapons, and the only difference being that one has green bullets.
Having played the game and used a fair range of the weapons, I can tell you they look, feel and sound great. Never did I feel like any weapon I was using was redundant.

… Then you must be considering accuracy and range in comparing the DMR and Carbine together… Going to be cross-map shooting with the Carbine are we?

It kills faster than the DMR and has less scope.(2x)
I will agree that it is like the BR out of scope though. But there is no gun that functions like the LR as a whole.

I already acknowledged that the use of repetitive weapons was to fill range roles. It just seems odd to have two weapons that fill nearly the same role and the weapons still being too similar. There are tons of military games that allow you to change the firing mode from burst to single fire, and green bullets is far less original than a secondary effect like the stun and shield damage of a plasma weapon like the plasma rifle in Halo 1. I applauded Bungie for replacing the Carbine with the Needle Rifle in Halo Reach. Rate of fire and range are great attributes to have in a game filled with weapons, but Halo isn’t just some military game. It’s the game that brought us weapons like the Plasma Rifle, the plasma pistol, and the arcing fuel rod gun.

If the battle rifle and DMR seem redundent to you then you might like using the light rifle instead of both the battle rifle and DMR in one class…
Personally I think its a joke to complain about such simple things like this. This point you are trying to make is like saying “halo has too many guns! they all shoot and kill things, we need more Melee weapons and nade types!” …

?
Needle Rifle is more like the DMR than the Carbine is, besides 'splodey bullets.

Not really, the more similar your weapons are, the less used other weapons will be. I’m actually planning on using the Light Rifle and DMR over the Carbine and BR. It’s the same problem that previous Halo games had. If I have a weapon with a longer range, that can kill quicker, then what is the point of having these other weapons?

In case it wasn’t completely obvious, that was sarcasm.
idk man. i kinda follow what your trying to say, but at the end of the day, there’s only so many things you can do to a rifle, a pistol, and a shotgun. they should all act like they fall in their respective categories. So i disagree with your logic at weapons being redundant.

^ im with him, I mean quite simply how original can any gun be? I mean at the end of the day its still a gun. and im feel confident that most of the guns will ge tthe attention they deserve, I have faith that 343 will do a great job balancing these rifles.

Rather than give the fire select option and give us a bunch of redundant weapons we have instead different firing mode weapons. This makes the weapons unique and varied if balanced right.(The loadout system promotes the balance by allowing players to spawn with their preference of engagement range and firepower-type.)
The BR and LR are for burst lovers but the former is better for shorter ranged combat while the latter is better for longer (on paper not considering player skill).
The Carbine and DMR are for single shot lovers but the former is better for shorter ranged combat while the latter is better for longer (on paper not considering player skill).
That’s as simple as it gets. But to say that’s as redundant as it gets is far from the truth:
A quick firing, 7 bullet, medium spread short ranged weapon (which I’m likely to not use as it looks to work like the H3 variant now).
A medium firing, 13-bullet, miniscule vertical spread with vertical recoil, burst mid. ranged weapon.
A medium firing, 13-bullet (I think), small spread burst mid. ranged but zero spread (I hope), 4-bullet single-shot long ranged weapon.
A medium firing, minute spread, 5-bullet, single-shot long ranged weapon.
> I’m not going to complain about an abundance of precision rifles.

> I do think the Shotgun is redundant with the Sword and Hammer though.
Shotty can kill still even if target is a slight distance from you. Hammer or shotty? not so much.
