Redemption of the spectre and revenant

Seeing as all the topics on waypoint is clustered with the S word and the A word, I want to move to a somewhat relaxed topic. As some of us know, there has been a large dilemma in the sandbox for a LOOONG time now, especially when it comes to the Covenant’s side of things. So, I took it upon myself to solve a part of it: the Covenant’s medium vehicle. Ever since Halo 2, there has been a problem with this, the spectre was too similiar to the warthog, and the revenant was rather… Weak to say the least.

But one day, it hit me: why not combine both concepts, the Covenant medium vehicles should be based on team work, but they should not carry passengers (save for a dedicated transport vehicle, e.g. the Shadow). What I mean by this, is that it should have the overall chasis of the revenant, but the driver alone can only control weaker, secondary weapons, like the ghost’s plasma cannons, but the “passenger” would control the main weapon, like the revenants mortar. Here’s some ideas:

Spectre

Purpose: Anti-infantry

Primary weapon: Focus turret (think of the focus rifle on steroids, with no projectile range limit, and 6x magnification)

Secondary weapon: 2x Class 1-Plasma cannons (the one used by the original spectre)

Revenant

Purpose: Anti-vehicle

Primary weapon: Class-2 Medium plasma mortar (same as before)

Secondary weapon: 2x Guided Munitions launchers (will have faster, but weaker projectiles than the actual plasma launcher of course)

Ghoul

Purpose: Anti-air

Primary weapon: Heavy Needle cannon (same as the one as the turrets from Halo Wars)

Secondary weapon: 2x Fuel Rod cannons (like the ones on the AA wraiths from H3)

Well, that’s all I have, feel free to suggest any improvements to the ideas (especially a better name for the ghoul), so that I can edit or add them to the OP. Thanks for reading.

Were you taking about the vampire when you said ghoul? If so I think that would be amazing!

The ghoul would be, in some ways, the landside version of the vampire.

I think they should just have both the Spectre and Revenant in the game. They were both unique in their own ways and would only add to the vehicle sandbox.

Ooo…I love this thread +1.

Well, I did state that I want them back, just with some tweaks though.

I’d like to see one with a driver controlled forward slow charge fuel rod cannon, maybe the beam type like in Halo 2. Let it flip vehicles and burn through shielding. The Gunner could use a massive needler swarm cannon that homes in on infantry. Honestly anything to make it competitive with a Warthog.

I specialize more in Japanese stuff so the kaiju, oni, tengu, yokai, kushu, and bakemono all technically fit the ghost monster theme.

Well, the ghoul is an anti air vehicle, so don’t expect it to go head to head with other vehicles. And I was thinking of a japanese name, but I realized that it would not fit well with the other vehicles.

Nobody else? :frowning:

I actually think “Ghoul” as a name fits 100%.

Huh, really? I thought it sounded a little off. But I guess it would do.

It fits the whole Ghost, Wraith and banshee theme, and if it is a Vampire (but on land) it is 100% perfect.

Honestly, I think the two vehicles were fine as is, though perhaps some tweaking would be necessary for balance’s sake. Your suggestions simply deck them out with too many guns. Though I’d like to see the Prowler back as well, with weaponry more befitting that of the Brutes. I’d also like to see Shades actually useful for once, perhaps alongside anti-air and fuel rod Shades as well. Though I would like to see the AA Wraith.

Thank you for the criticism, but I actually made them that way to balance it out with the warthog. You see, neither of the weapons on these vehicles should match their warthog counterparts, but since there are two people operating each one individually, it makes them a force to be reckoned with. Now you may be thinking, “but the hog only has one gun,” that is true, but the hog also has a passenger that can use any gun they want to, including rocket launchers and splasers, and the passenger can also carry objectives, but their covenant variants can’t. So in the end, they are balanced.

Passengers are usually just that, though. It’s quite difficult to get kills in that spot, especially at high speed and with small arms. Even if they do have power weapons, those are even harder to land a hit with and have limited ammo. Nerfing the driver and gunner’s weapons might end you up with a vehicle with two peashooters. As it stands, the Revenant has surprisingly high armor, even though the driver is somewhat exposed. Its cannon can also flip light vehicles, and it possesses the strongest splatter in the game. The passenger seat complements its size and speed. It’s moderately powerful as is, though it can’t do much against air vehicles, which is similar to both the Ghost and the Wraith; it fills the niche between those two. On the other hand, the Spectre is supposed to be a counterpart to the Warthog, to fill the same niche. This isn’t a bad thing, it just adds some duality to the weapon sandbox. Just like the Carbine fulfills a similar role to the Battle Rifle, and the Plasma Rifle (or its variants) fulfill a role similar to the Assault Rifle or SMG, the Spectre should be able to engage both infantry and aerial vehicles with reasonable effectiveness, but possess a weakness in terms of ability to destroy more well armored vehicles-- akin to the standard Warthog. Furthermore, with the exception of the Spectre and Prowler (since they’re deliberately Warthog analogs), Covenant vehicles are designed, for the most part, to be single-occupant, as opposed to human vehicles. Compare the Ghost, the Banshee, the Revenant, and the Chopper to the Warthog variants, the Mongoose, the Hornet, and the Falcon. Tanks are an interesting case, as initially, both the Wraith and Scorpion were single-occupant, but their secondary armaments were transferred to separate gunner positions for balancing purposes.

Personally, I love the vehicular aspect of Halo’s sandbox and would love to see expansion, but also return of older items. The Chopper was unique in that it lacked the speed and maneuverability of other Covenant vehicles, but it was tough and had heavy firepower, as well as a mean splatter. I’d like to see a similar design applied to the Prowler, replacing the plasma turret with a similar weapon to the Chopper’s: slow-ish rate of fire with a mean punch, making it more adept at taking down vehicles as compared to the standard Warthog or Spectre. As I mentioned before, the AA Wraith could offer a different role than the standard by virtue of its high volume of projectiles with small blast radii compared to the singular, massive bomb of the original Wraith. Again, keeping Covenant vehicles as they were maintains the philosophy of turning a single soldier into a highly mobile assault platform, while human vehicles use full squads but have more versatility within each vehicle.

Would anybody else like to see some Forerunner vehicles? Also the forerunner should have their own turret that act as cannons,(possibly hardlight cannons) that are distinct from plasma and machine gun turrets.

I would like to see forerunner “vehicles” in some shape or form as well, but this thread is specifically about covenant medium vehicles. Feel free to start you’re own thread with you’re ideas for them.

I do not want to see Foreruuner vehicles…

I like the overall concept. It intrigues me. And in a timeline aspect, it could easily fit with the advancing technology; the Revenant was last seen in-game 2552 while the Spectre shared the same. The current year is 2559, so it seems logically that they could explain a merging of the Covenant “mid-size support platforms”. I have a similar thread on what vehicles people want to see in Halo 5.
