Unless I’m misunderstanding, I don’t believe that is a fully thought-out question. Maybe rephrase it?
It may mean that a team-mate that you damaged has just died, not the enemy player you were fighting.

You only see red X’s on teammates so why would a dead teammate be coming after you?

Maybe he is playing in beta infection and just does not know it
He’s talking about the red x that flashes on your reticle when you get a kill. I’ve noticed this too, OP. Sometimes it’ll flash the red x instead of the hit marker when the enemy is not dead … could be a glitch, or what JLtheStoneWall said where it’s an assist (a teammate killed an enemy who had hit earlier and it’s showing you the mark).

or you probably shot your teammate that was one shot fighting the other guy. I’ve done that a couple times where i shoot my teammate as im tying to help him but i end up popping him right in the head by mistake.

Talking about the Hit Markers? They are white 90% of the time unless you hit them in a critical spot then you get Red Hit Markers. This is completely separate from the Kill Confirmed Red X
