Rebalancing the Sword

I like the Energy Sword. I feel it’s great for ambushes. Generally I keep it hidden away, and draw my blade when an opponent engages me up close. Then it intimidates the enemy and causes them to choke, they never see it coming and that’s when slash their body onto the cold floor. And how do I always taunt my victims? I don’t really t-bag, my thing is that I like to drag their rotting corpse across the ground, knocking them around helplessly.

My only problem I’m not sure about the balance between Sword and Shotgun. In Halo 4, as much as the overall game wasn’t that good, I liked the dynamic between the two weapons. When sprinting with the Energy Sword, players could not slow down your momentum with gunfire like with other weapons. This made the Sword better when used aggressively, but the Shotgun was still better on the defense because it still had a longer kill range (as its a gun, not a melee weapon). If sprint has to be in the game, I would like the Sword to retain that characteristic somehow. Since with H5’s sprint, you have to build up your momentum or enemy players can shoot you out, how about the Sword just allows you to constantly sprint at people whenever without having to worry about getting knocked out?

Because think about it. As far as I go, I think its better to make weapons more unique. So if you give the Sword a more aggressive playstyle like in H4, while the Shotgun is geared toward defensive play, I think you’d have a cool dynamic between the two weapons. It wouldn’t be as overpowered or godsend as the H4 incarnation, because it seems to have a lesser lunge range unless you’re in smart-scope. Really, I feel if you have a choice between the Sword and Shotgun, the Shotgun is always the better choice. We should give some kind of tactical advantage to the Sword so both are equally good options in their own way. I was always a Sword player in the other Halo games, and as much as Halo 4 was a bad game, I really liked that the Sword actually had a usefulness of its own that wasn’t covered better by the Shotgun.

What do you guys think? Or if you disagree, do you have any other ideas about how to rebalance the Sword?

I use the Halo 5 Energy Sword as if it was a Halo 2 Energy Sword, where you pull it out right as an enemy is in range and slice their face into deli meat.

your base speed is slightly higher when you have the sword that it is without it. i saw a video during 343’s live stream of the HCS qualifiers. They do a little “myth busters” type thing, proving certain myths like the fact that you move faster with the sword than without it. i didn’t realize this until i saw the video.

im guessing this was their alternative, they don’t want as many people just charging into gunfire without being touched, they would prefer people to sneak up on each other with the sword. you can finally catch up to that guy you are following around with sword came instead of him just running away and taking you to his teammates. 343 tried hard to try and take away the advantages of sprint and i think they have done well with that. this feature of getting slowed down when you are not at full sprint isn’t bad (if you are at full spring it doesnt stop you, also why i think there isn’t much to complain about here).

Also with the ability to slide, jump, and thrust (or any combo of that) you can usually close ground really fast in halo 5. you can also lunge MUCH farther if you zoom in with the sword, that might be something you are overlooking ( i think most do). the range of the sword is best when zoomed in and if not used correctly it can seem like a terrible gun now. I think its fine as it is.

I actually did kind of notice that, but I decided not to bring it up because it’s so slight of difference, it barely even weighs into effect.

My main point regarding sliding, jumping, and thrusting, you can easily do that with the sword yes, but the Shotgun is also good at that too, you can use the Shotgun in the same way and it’ll be better because of the longer instant-kill range.

As far as zooming goes, because I never really use that. I always just assumed that they reduced the lunge range from the hip, and gave us the longer lunge we already had before but making it zoom-only. As in, it still has the same lunge range as it always did, now you just have to zoom in to do that. That’s what I always assumed, if that’s the case it’s stupid because the smart-scope doesn’t let you gain any momentum or move fast at all. But I don’t entirely know for sure, so I want to ask you about that.
