ONI announced Chief is dead, I’m assuming that is to cover up the fact that he has gone AWOL. But like people have said, ONI are trying to shame him, how can they create and release a story portraying him as the bad guy, going around activating these Guardians, when they’ve already announced he’s dead? Or did ONI portray him as the bad guy, THEN announce he was dead so he would go down in history as a traitor?
Well considering ONI doctored the footage of Chief shooting up the Sangheili consulate… seems to me that they really believe that Spartan-IIs are not only obsolete but dangerous to mankind and want to officially replace them with the IV’s, and all the stuff to do with the guardians and such.
In the end, you’ll find out in H5.

Announcing him as dead stops questions being asked when Osiris hunts him down. It’s easier to kill and cover up a dead man, and the public won’t immediately have such a backlash about it.
They probably won’t want people to even know that Chief is involved with the Guardians, or that the Guardians even exist.
It’s because he has gone AWOL and his death would be the cover-up so ONI lets him die a hero instead of becoming a traitor. Hence, the “official” story is the chief is dead. But the “unofficial” story is Locke bringing him back it.
That’s what I was thinking originally before I saw this on twitter. I’m assuming that was defaced to add to the marketing hype so it looks as though the public themselves did it, but if ONI were covering his actions up to prevent them from being known to the public, then they wouldn’t know he was a traitor?

Ben was discredited because there was no proof linking it to ONI (It was a honeypot) of the weapons bunker on the halo ring.
I think a hunt the truth refresher might be in order for me considering H5 is almost here.

Been planning to do that myself mate, as well as trying to read as much of the books as I can. Just preparing for two long weeks…
