I have came to ponder the idea of this mechanic via my direct observations within this diverse universe, from this I am here to suggest the very idea of Real time damage to the very armour worn by the player model (be it Sangheili or Spartan). This particular mechanic will most likely work in a fashion similar to most current-gen and next-gen Real-time Driving Simulator’s, the key difference being that it will not contest with the balanced nature of the core multiplayer experience this purely to add a more immersion and believability to the overall experience of this universe.
This mechanic is triggered when the target’s shielding system is compromised, if the contesting player or AI is wielding ballistic weaponry various pit’s, scratches and impact crater’s will form, further more if explosive’s is utilized the armour itself will begin to fragment or shear off completely. but the biggest innovation within the system is how it is able to gauge the damage subjected via plasma to put this into prospective I have provided a canonical source below.
“Complete armour protection from plasma weaponry is generally difficult to accomplish due to plasma’s high damage ratio. The armour used by the UNSC Marine Corps and UNSC Army usually provides good protection from plasma, but only to a certain extent. A series of hits from a plasma weapon will literally melt or burn the armour, rendering it useless. The SPARTAN-II armour variant is similar the Marines’ armour, in that it will eventually give way to the plasma. Some newer versions of the Spartans’ armour boast energy shields, which provide additional protection from plasma, although shielding systems can be completely depleted by sustained plasma fire, or a single, overcharged bolt.”
As I picture this in situ, as a particular point of the target’s unshielded apparel is hit, this point begins to glow like white phosphorus, as more plasma hit’s this spot brilliant river’s of molten titanium and trickle like rain droplet’s in till the plasma has penetrated directly through the armour system leave nothing more than a large cavity in it’s place. other weapon’s such as Energy sword’s or glow stick’s of impending doom as I call them, will create white hot scar’s within the hapless soul you are pitted against.
I do concur that this form of Real-time rendering is well within the capability of the Xbox one, as this console has the processing power to compensate for this kind of rendering and the added advantage of cloud computing so I strongly consider that object’s can be rendered in real-time, making it possible for this kind of Real-time damage to be incorporated into the game engine.
Neat idea. So long as it doesn’t divert from time that could be used to develop multiplayer or campaign tools, I’m fine with it.
Detail is always welcome when it isn’t at the expense of game play.

I stated the factor of this mechanic being purely a cosmetic feature to add more immersion and believability to the gameplay. But I can see where your concern’s may lay, but this feature won’t change or tamper with the player’s hitbox.
Interesting, but 343 needs to focus on function before they looking into visuals.
I want a game that is fun to play not fun to look at. There are plenty of Crytech games for that.

oh yeah, I didn’t mean directly impact game play. I was thinking more along the lines of opportunity cost. What could they do instead of this with the requisite development time?
I don’t know the answer, so I’m not really objecting. I’m tentatively in favor. =D
This would be fantastic. I think it’s well time that game developers began taking bigger steps into the lands of realism (and they have, if you look at games like Battlefield).
Obviously I wouldn’t want this to affect other ares of the game, but the plasma effect you described sounds aesthetically awe-inspiring, nevermind the fact that Halo needs to go back to its roots as a Mature rated shooter.
It could be as simple as having a shattered visor when dealt a headshot, or having entire segments of armor fall off; in any case I’m all for.
Personally I believe that they fully capable of creating interesting gameplay mechanic’s as they’re hypothesis of the player having the feel of a Spartan II super soldier is a fantastic idea, and this in itself adds many great opportunity’s to the gameplay experience so functionality isn’t a problem for 343i.
Yeah, like if you get in a sword duel, your armor gets a nice slice cutting it. And if you get sniped, your visor cracks, and dirt covers your armor. I would love that type of stuff.
It’s a great idea, and I feel it would make many of the sandbox’s weapons feel much more powerful, actually seeing the damage that you can do to an enemy once their shields are down. I’m all for it, and just imagine its uses in Machinima…
