Real Talk: Halo Battle Royale...Or fresh start for franchise?

I hope everyone heard what NickMercs said recently about 343 and Halo dropping the ball during a crucial time for gaming when the gaming community is desperate for something anything.

I absolutely agree with him. Halo needs something fresh. Lets be honest…their current trend has been a downward spiral since Halo 4. Yeah Halo 5 and Infinite improved upon it, but Halo aint the juggernaut it used to be. Games like fornite and heck pubg are way outperforming halo in the current state that its in.

Honestly, 343 needs to shake some things up, whether thats with a battle royale or something fresh. Or maybe we need a new pwrspective from a different developer to take over. Halo cannot not continue to stay where its at in its current state and expect things to change.

What are the community thoughts?

If this is a streamer, I have never needed any of them to see what’s literally right in front of my eyes. When infinite released all anyone needed to see is how it was in trouble, and this last 7 months they have struggled to improve things.

True, it needs something fresh and fresh ideas are welcomed, but it also need 343 to be consistent with what a Halo game is that they have struggled with since Halo 4. That’s what made the original Halo, Halo. The original Bungie moved Halo forward, improving upon , they didn’t constantly change everything every title, that that is where the problem actually lies with 343.

I saw the clip in question on twitter and it was about 1 min.

I’m not exactly sure what exactly was said that wasn’t already said before but some people quote Nick saying “We need a BR” or something along those lines.

I’m not excusing what 343 has done with Halo Infinite so far, but that clip didn’t accomplish anything groundbreaking. We’ve heard the arguments about BRs before.

Halo doesn’t need a Battle Royale to succeed, it needs good quality content, good networking, good level progression and a shop that offers value for money.

If a BR for Halo does appear then so be it but this game is not dying because it doesn’t have one. It’s dying because of 343i’s ineptitude at senior management level, hell even Microsoft Game Studios are at fault for letting 343i drive this franchise off a cliff edge.

Battle royales are gross. but then again so is 343i so no doubt they’ll go all in on one. The BR gameplay loop is the stupidest thing i can think of. que for minutes, take another couple of minutes to land and find any kind of decent weapon, and then at best a 50/50 chance to die in the first encounter so you can do it again. it perfectly plays counter to HALO’s strengths. I’m not going to say that I outright won’t play that gametype, but I sincerely doubt I’ll even try it since it will no doubt be a buggy mess since they STILL haven’t even addressed desync let alone actually fixed it. If I want that experience I’ll go play apex, but i don’t which is why I don’t play that either.

I’d vote a soft-reboot of the Reclaimer Saga.

Let the Battle Royale happen BUT as a spin-off that is not tied to the main game.

You know, like how Ghost Recon has a BR game separate from Breakpoint and Wildlands.

This way if the BR game fails, it doesn’t bring down the main game.

The multiplayer modes are kind of dated and so is this kind of PvP experience. Might work well for esports and competitions but that’s it and a small niche. Now that games like Fortnite, GTA 5 online and Destiny 2 have come out gamers want a whole lot more from gaming it’s just that simple.

But what Halo needs in addition to Battle Royale is something like what Destiny 2 has an entire part of the game dedicated to multiplayer PvE where you take your Spartan and actually get deployed against Banished in different activities and game modes. This can take place on really large maps in different locations off of Zeta Halo in space and in different areas of the rings outside of the campaign areas.

It’s so weird that Spartans endlessly train against each other but they’ll never face really challenging Banished forces or bosses that can really test a Spartan’s abilities. Then there’s a way for people to have a more casual social experience and a reason to customize your Spartan and add things like weapon mods.

NickMercs is asking for a Battle Royale because Battle Royales make streamers money. For whatever reason, Twitch viewers like to watch people play Battle Royales.

I personally don’t see the appeal and won’t play a Halo Battle Royale if it ever comes around. I also don’t think it’s going to save the franchise or make Halo Infinite suddenly good.

This mentality is how Halo 4 became Call of Halo 4, and how Halo 5 became Titanfall+Call of Duty Lite.

Halo does not need to change what it is to appeal to non-fans. Take a look at Dark Souls leading into Elden Ring. Dark Souls was fairly niche when it came out, and was renowned for being hard. Players adapted to it, and now Elden Ring sold 13 million copies. I would not be surprised to hear that most major publishers would look at Dark Souls and Elden Ring, and consider it woefully outdated with very few player friendly features - but that’s what the fan base likes and Elden Ring feeds into that.

In short, unique products sell. Copying whatever is popular to chase trends does not.

Halo can be good. There was a lot of hype leading up to Halo Infinite’s release. The problem with Infinite isn’t changing trends in player expectations, it’s that it launched, broken, buggy and content deprived. Halo Infinite could have been a massive success if 343 didn’t spend the last 6 years trying to rework an engine into something new to justify half a billion dollars in development costs, and the contract work cycle that doesn’t work for game dev.

343 has had two fresh starts already.

they need to bring halo to an end and work on a new series. or sell it to another company who will do it justice.

This has been one of the major issues with Halo since 343i took stewardship. They are so busy chasing a player base that doesn’t exist and chasing trends that no one really cares about. That they can’t or won’t see the loyal player base they have that want a halo that plays, feels, looks and has the Halo experience that builds a great community.
