Real Positive Criticism

Admist the new trailer and gameplay there are alot of mixed reactions from the community with very mixed messages and preferecnes. I figured we have to be quick to find out what it is we the community are looking for in a halo game, find out what is it that either pleases or annoys us, and then in a more understandable, more unified voice help 343 figure out how to be more positively recieved.

So before we move forward, I have to first state the purpose of this thread, who is it for, what it can/cannot accomplish.
Most of use are no strangers to the number of different preferences this community holds, and each of us are entitled to our own opinion. This isnt to bash one side or the other or to decide which of our opinions are better, or to figure out which gameplay elements and mechanics should or should not belong in halo. This is a place where we try to understand where each of us come from with our opinions, and attempt to reconcile these opinions.

This isnt a garunteed way to help 343 redirect the direction halo is upon now, but it is more so for us, the community to understand each other. I love halo, and im sure many of you love it too. Im not giving up on this franchise and I think a large part of this franchise is actually the community. Even if we get a game that doesnt please us, at least the community can be saved. And I believe as a longtime fan of what halo is to me, I hold a partial responsibility in the participation of dialogue between other fans, new and old. I want to see halo succeed. This thread is for those who want to see halo succeed.

So, without further a do, here are some of my criticisms/priases I have about some issues in the gameplay reveal that I believe can still be changed, and may not actually find their way into the final game. This is a demo, But still i just want to make sure these kinks are ironed out before the game launches:

1- first thing I probably noticed is there is a bit of comedy relief. Without a doubt that is what I believe was attempted to be achieved when echo 216 asked cheif if he was even listening and chief is like “I count 3 aa turrents” as the camera that was panned away from the cheif snaps back up to show he was looking out the window the whole time. Given the reaction of other streamers who have giggled or chuckled at this moment , that further solidifies my judgement on how this was supposed to be comic relief. I personally find it an odd way to introduce people to the gameplay but nonetheless I appreciate it.

2- the next thing I noticed immediately is the assualt rifle… its sound, its textures. I dont have any remarks on the model itself but as for sound and the texture of the ar, im not a big fan. I cant speak for most of the community, but from a personal standpoint, it sounds too weak, and its texture does indeed look like plastic. I dont mind the simplistic look of textures, but if it leads me to assume the material is something different than is intended to be projected I do believe that is an issue. I imagine it is supposed to be a metal of some sort. But anyways, im sure the texture can be fixed, and im looking forward for it to be updated.
Im a big fan of how the assault rifle sounded in halo CE, so I really wish it could return to that. However I dont mind if they changed it but it still sounded beefier.

3- Grass spawning and despawning in frame… and while we are at it, later down the line in the trailer, smoke spawining in and despawning in the distance. Im very sure im not the only one who saw this, but for me this was one of the things that made me really concerned. I sure hope this kind of stuff is fixed before the launch of halo, OR halo is delayed until these issues are fixed. They unfortunately break immersion. I know this is a demo and alot can happen going forward. But it does concern me that it looks like this this close to launch.

4- phantom suprised me, looks like its been pulled straight out of halo wars 2 without any visual enhancements as an fps adaptation. That to me is exteremely concerning. I am really hoping is placeholder for now. But i definetly want to see the banished phantom make an apperance. Just in a very visually improved way. Another thing about the phantom I noticed was its rather strange physics… it seemed a bit jittery to me… especailly for an aircraft. Id prefer smoother flight. Previous halo phantoms all had much smoother flight patterns and momentum that seemed intuitive.

5- the elephant in the room, sprint. Love it, or hate it, its in the game. I dont have much to say about this as I dont think its gonna be removed. From what it seems it doesnt give that much of an improvement in speed. I imagine this is for the purposes of avoiding that zippy twitchy gameplay modern first person shooters are known to have had for the past few years… while still providing the option to traverse areas quicker, albiet not that much quicker. I really wish 343 allows us to gun while running… but hey im just throwing that out there. I think the consensus in the community is that we want to traverse terrain faster, but keep guns up to avoid those breaks sprint currently create in a gunfight.

6- warthog sound also might be sounding a little too weak. It was also at this point I started considering that maybe the stream was having audio issues, but it seems that dialogue and other sandbox sounds seem to be working fine. But alas, im curious as to what the rest of the community thinks of this. The power slide is amazing thou, made me think the physics has really been upgraded.

7- and then i saw the warthog take a jump… and it seems that its moments were canceled in the air… making it stop rotating… which i found very odd. I sincerely hope this is not an indication of how physics works in the air for halo infinite. First it was the phantom and now its the warthog. I understand this might have been done so that the warthog doesnt tumble and flip and stuff , but you could fix that by putting the warthogs center of gravity lower i believe.

8- gunfights seem actually very halo. I think 343 focused alot on that. Kudos. What I mean by this is how gunfights play out in a general sense. Compare to halo 4 and 5. This halo demo did it better than those. But if you argue its not the same as halo 3, 2, and CE, you arent wrong. It is quite different, but I dont really mind different as long as the outcome doesnt depart too far from how we expect it to play.

9- weapon sanbox, now there is ALOT to unpack here. But for those who missed some of the screenshots, we have the battle rifle, energy sword, assualt rifle, spike grenade, plasma grenade, plasma pistol, needler and frag grenade returning at least. Really happy to see those return thou I really wished that more of the sandbox would be familiar. Then we have so many new weapons and equipment that its hard to keep up with atm. So I imagine a new version of the saw, a pistol, a twist on the brute shot and mauler, a new shotgun, and a new covanant carbine all made an appearance. I can barely keep up with the names atm. I like that they expanded upon the sandbox, but also I hope that the sandbox unwinds slower when it comes to actual game. bit overwelming. Also i sincerely hope that this doesnt clutter the sandbox with weapon roles that are redundant. Given that weapons have class, categories, and fire type i think there is a way 343 is going about resolving that. Thats what i hope.

10- grappling hook waw, we saw this coming but, we kind of didnt believe it till we saw it. haha… Personally ill take this equipment pickup any day over thrust. its not a base player thing in mp… it doesnt allow for the zippy twitchy gameplay modern fps shooters are known for, but also alows for interesting traversal scenarios among other things. Quite an interesting way to innovate. I think this a mechanic that will stay… wether we like it or hate it. Personally i like it thou. My preference can be wrong thou.

11- Brutes are now hairless… ehhh looking much more like generic bad guys. Not a big fan of that but i can imagine why they took that route. Mohawk brutes will be missed. imo at least.
12- elites look awsome, I believe this is a place 343 reaaaaaaaaaallly listened. Fins for helmet heck yea. But this is also where textures and lighting might seem a bit off.
13- grunts look interesting, to say the least. I see both 343 and bungie style armors. Oh and now they are thrown into battle by the brutes to suicide and the dialogue is hilarious. Big props for that. But I will say without a dobut a big part of the community is not a big fan of the texture and color of their skin… me included.

14- Open world. Yes pls. Although I do feel yall who wanted a more linear designed gameplay. Now here is what i propose. I think 343 should manage this by making waypoint markers to the central mission automatically appear on screen without having to check the map. That should help keep the gameplay seem alot more linear. But as for the open map, and for the option to do things on the side im a very very very very very big fan of that. My opinion of course can be wrong. But I definetly do consider your thoughts and preferences on it.

15- Halo 3 style Equipment is back hell yes. Map pickups. we have seen the grappling hook and that other thing i cant remember its name yet. Im going to call it cylinder sheild for now (as to contrast a bubble sheild) and it seems you can shoot out of it… seems op. I wonder how that might play out in mp. Perhaps in some way like a more aggresive bubble shield, allowing for a team or player to push forward to an objective. Of course, if this isnt a map pickup and something you can start with then this is waaay too op. But given that its a map pickup, it could serve for some very interesting gameplay i imagine. Again, you can have a different opinion. Im curious as to see what other equipment this game has in store for us.

16- I mentioned weapons earlier but im coming back to them now. There are quite a few weapons that scream destiny rather than halo… or some other sci fi shooter. Like the new saw… and the new brute shot. Some thing might need to be fixed about their aesthetics. Im sure many other halo fans here can relate.

17- enemy armor seems to be very dynamic… much more so than in previous halo games. Im personally a big fan of this. But you can hold a different opinion. it works much like halo 2’s brutes… but there there was only a helmet peice… or like the halo reach grunt ultras where they have a helmet only also. It seems this idea has been expanded to the rest of the body. Personally a bif fan of this.

18- In game lighting change with time. It seems when you first start the mission its like day… but as you near the end as you get up the elevator it is a sunset. The sun clearly has moved in position with respect to the orientation of the halo ring. Thats interesting , but also to be expected of an open world. Might create a nice dynamic. But on a side note with respect to this… is the skybox. THe skybox… in contrast to the beautiful landscape unfortunately looks lackluster. This is a great contrast to what halo was always good at. I really hope they fix that before the game launches as well. Fill it maybe with some clouds… maybe? Ray tracing will come eventually and i hope it makes it look alot better.

19- I mentioned some enemies earlier, but oh god the jackals are back. They look fantastic. But as many might have noticed their shields look… interesting to say the least. Not a fan, but also not a hater (of the shield). speaking of shields. . .

20- rather strange shield animation… I feel like its a solid dislike from me. Im not talking about the shield noise (which is fantastic) or the sheild display bar or that stuff. Im talking about the orange/yellow hexagons that appear on screen while shield recharges sometimes. I really really really dont like that. But my opinion can be wrong.
21- clamber makes a return , as does sliding… and it seems aiming down sights returns to zooming for percision weapons only. Mixed reception from that but hey i dont mind.
22- and ill end it off unfotunately on this negative note: Dialogue of uhhhh wats his name… that brute in the end was super cringy. Some things he said i liked… but woa.
Like his snaring at times were over abundant imo. Some of what he said was very cliche main villan trope-esque. “I wish i could tell you it was difficult, but it wasnt” … really?
And that close up of his face kind of emphasized the fact he was missing hair… Liked the transition from the hologram to real thou. However when the hologram starts up something is off… imo.

Other thoughts: alot of people say it looks cartoony. I respectfully disagree. Alot of people say it doesnt feel like halo. I respectfully disagree. Alot of people say it looks unfinished. I agree entirely and I hope that gets fixed.
For me, i come out of this more satisfied than dissapointed… and i have faith the issues ive pointed out may be fixed… at least most of them. The wasp in the cover art seems to make a return which i hope doesnt mean there wont be a falcon or hornet… The community really really wants at least one of those to return myself included.
Lets speak of hope. Let us believe. But let us not be blind, and let us overcome these challenges… “together”.
Also. . . I find that halo has quite an interesting history of telling the studios stories through their characters. it seems like brohammer (echo 216) was supposed to be us or fans of classic halo and mastercheif was supposed to be 343 industries? haha. “Safe? I havent been safe since I found you”
but anyways. Lemme hear your constructive criticism. What you liked. What you didnt like. What you agree with me on and waht you disagree with, and also your overall thoughts.
And to those who wish to depart with the community, or want 343 to burn… or anything along those lines. I mean you are welcome to voice your opinion. But I dont believe that is in good faith and seems rather counter the narative of what halo kind of stands for. Dont give up hope. You can voice your frustration, you can voice your concerns. That is good… let us have dialogue. And also its fair for you to take action as well. You can go ahead and not buy halo at launch or ever if it isnt to your liking. Power to you. And to me, you will always be welcomed back if you decide to return, and also to me you will always be an important part of the community. Your voice matters. Your halo… matters.
And even if it might not seem like that… even if your trust has been broken and your voice seems to be ignored, rest assured that at least a part of this community hears you and will support you.

EDIT: and the music… music is awsome kinda XD. There are some parts im like… really? lol but for the most part I love it. Especially especially in the trailer before the gameplay.
EDIT 2: Also transitions from gameplay to cutscenes and cutscenes to gameplay are amazing
