Why hasn’t this issue been adressed yet? Reach has been out for more than a year now, is still a major game, has undergone multiple updates and its servers are still worthless! My Internet connection is top notch, my XBL connection is max and yet I still lag when I’m host! Valve has better servers than Reach does and Valve is notoriously terrible at server maintenance. Before you guys start changing the game, you may want to fix your servers so we can actually play your “updates”.

Other players smart one.
It isn’t just the host’s connection that is important.
It’s everybody.
i honestly cannot take this topic seriously, how the hell can you be lagging if you are host? everything runs smooth and near instant, if you’re lagging then you are not host.
another problem, how can you mention servers being a problem and then mention you being host? a obvious contradictory right here.
Halo 3 & ODST were Host reliant until the update to share the load
Halo: Reach uses a median signal:
Compresses ALL players in the looby/ match and comes up with the average, that average signal is transmited to the servers as the game link, when someone leaves the game or is booted hence the blac kscreen while it recalulates the signal and adapts. Thats why sometimes you have lag like maches because one or two people are usig a runnish connecion and those with good ones are brought down to near that level to make the game play soothly. Sometimes their are problems and the link is’ weighted’ one end where one player or a team is presented with lag.
OP, please don’t use terms whose meanings you don’t know.
If host has a bad connection, everyone else is affected, but host’s gameplay will usually be just fine. If a game uses a host, then servers have absolutely no relevance to the connection quality during the match.
If you’re lagging while you’re host in a Multiplayer game (as opposed to Campaign or Firefight), then you’re either not host, or you’re playing with the laggiest players in human history. Either way, though, it’s not 343’s fault and it’s not Reach’s servers. Set your matching prefs to “Prefer Good Connection” before you search.
That explains it. I hate lag and I hate when people can’t spring 30$ a month for good internet. They should revert to the “Best connection gets host” so this never happens to people (myself included) who don’t get what they paid for.
Another thing I’d like to point out: Reach is a terrible game to play against/with anyone overseas. I was put in a game full of Europeans (living in North America), and an enemy and I got into a DMR shootout where I died, he walked away, shields regenerated and then dropped dead, giving me a headshot medal. So yes, it is the servers.
I get 75% off al my games connection problems.
And one thing is sure my connection is not the problem.
I vote for dedicated servers.

I was not aware of this (yes, I’ll admit I was wrong), and judging from some other “flamer” posts, neither did some other people.

Dedicated servers= no brainer. So does that mean everyone at 343 is guilty of having brains?

It’s nowhere near as cut and dried as you’re making it.

i didn’t know it was in your contract with your ISP that you get host in every game you play…?

Uhhh…can you name a console fps game that uses a P2P networking model that actually would play well overseas? Even games with dedicated serves wouldn’t play well with people from NA and Europe. Too long of a distance for information to travel having nothing to do with any servers.
Halo does not use servers, only for play list.
Each game you have been played has been hosted by someone own xbox. That is why you have a black screen when the host quit, as the game is migrating to a new host.
If you had servers, you would have this problem. All Halo games have been like this.

Younever play Halo 2 online did you.
REACH network code is amazing compared to Halo 2.
90% of games I played in Halo 2 I had red or yellow bar. And I played about 4000 games. Halo REACH, 10% of games will be red or yellow.
This is how much the Network Code has improved.
Halo 3, Eed and Yellow would had been about 30%.
i lag like 1/15 games max. Its your fault.
PS: reach doesnt have servers…

Read my original post before throwing accusations. Top notch Internet/ Max XBL connection. How is it my fault then?
Someone mentioned games that perform less well overseas. RE5 was still dead on when I played with people all the way from either the UK or Japan. So it is possible to make it better.

Couldn’t have said it better.
YEAH… halo reach is definitely P2P not server based so your completely wrong already XD
2nd if your host then its IMPOSSIBLE to have crazy lag. and 2nd i have almost NEVER had connection issues in reach so that kills your point even further.
just quit the franchise and go play something else instead of complaining here about something that 343 wont even consider reading a 4th of.
It’s pretty much impossible to have horrible lag if you’re host. If you do, the other players must be playing over a wi-fi connection hooked up to satellite internet with the dish under a concrete block.
As far as the netcode goes? I used to have a 1Mbps downstream internet connection, and as long as I prioritized good connections, I never had too many issues with lag. Excellent netcode if you ask me.
