Reach is my first intro to Halo

Reach is my first Halo game at all. I plan to get all of the others but Halo Reach is my fist introduction to Halo. I like it but some of the old timers don’t seem to, anyone know why?

> I like it but some of the old timers don’t seem to, anyone know why?

Because it is very different from Halo 2 and 3.

The last time the franchise’s multiplayer had significant changes was with Halo 2 which was viewed as competitively inferior to Halo CE. The same is true of Halo Reach but moreso.

Much like Halo 2’s changes the majority of changes in Halo Reach lower the individual skill gap and make gameplay slower.

The mechanics (bloom ect) are questionable and features (AA’s) overly complicate the sandbox while not actually adding depth but rather a rock/paper/scissors style of gameplay where certain gameplay elements are rendered ineffective introducing more luck into the equation.

I do get frustrated at times when I think I have a perfect shot or something and it just misses at random. Is that the kind of thing their talking about?

I have seen other weird mishaps too. Sometimes the weapons just seem off, not smooth or something. Now I must tell everyone I have never played online in any way. Just split screen at home, so I might have never experienced what their talking about.

In vanilla Reach the bloom when used optimally from close to mid range is very inconsistent.

There’s a large element of luck and that luck seems to really frustrate a lot of players to the point they’ve given up on Reach for that alone.

Vanilla Halo Reach on bad hosts are some of the worst Halo matches I have ever played because of the inconsistency of the bloom. Halo 2 bridgers and standbyers are preferable because at least I could quit without copping an idiotic quit ban in that game.

Since Halo 2 the franchise has lost a lot of its fun factor in my opinion.

Do you understand how the reticule bloom works?

The faster you fire weapons, the more spread out and random they will be, however, if you time your shots and keep the reticule bloom under control, it will fire accurately.

If you are missing shots, slow down and pace, especially on default Reach settings.

People are naturally afraid of change. You can relate this to pretty much anything in the world. Check out Youtube comments whenever that website updates.

Thats right I forgot about pacing my shots. I get carried away and forget these kind of things the more I play.

Yeah, I understand bloom is simulating the kickback of real weapons. I kind of like the attempt at realism but the bloom does do funny things to me.

Its a skill you have to learn.

Youll find the “vets” take a dump on any new halo game after the first one. Its like a law of physics or something.

It will be interesting to see whats up from the perspective of someone who started with Reach and worked backwards instead. See if you can pick up ODST cheap (for the multiplayer disc) and see how you think H3 online ompares to reach and report back.

Reach was my first Halo as well, then I got CEA. I must say I like Reach better than CEA in almost everything, I just think the campaign is much better in reach. But I’ve never played Halo 2/3/odst.

Reach was the first Halo game I owned(first I played was Halo 2)and I love it. I own the other games minus Halo Wars and I think they are all fantastic games. Reach is my favourite Halo so far.

I started out with Halo 2. Then I got Halo 1, Then 3, and then Reach, then I bought Wars and ODST, and finally CEA. I like them all. They are all fun. I actually like Halo Reach a lot better than Halo 3 because the armor abilities are easier to work around than one thinks, and they all have their unique uses. And I don’t really mind bloom, it doesn’t stop me from getting 20 kills a game. People just needed to learn how to change to a game, but they refused. That’s the reason why people didn’t like Reach. Change.

Ive been around for quite a while and I love reach. That being said I dont like bloom, and I HATE armor abilities. But reach has the best netcode, and hit detection system; giving it the cleanest gameplay in the franchise.
So reach is my favorite halo as well.

Halo 3 will give you a much better and fuller experience of what real Halo is like. I highly recommend getting Halo 3 and ODST for all the multiplayer maps.

I thought 2 was the overall best multiplayer wise. We’ve recently gone back and played some games on it. Its the maps.

Halo 1 is great, but I find the spawn system really awkward. And I dislike that the needler is so lame in the early games.

Oddly enough, just about everything the op said about reach is how I felt about 3.

Wow, OP, this is your first game for the franchise? I feel really sorry for you.

Sweet, Ive been playing off and on since CE.

I would hit Halo 3 while its still online, might not be for too much longer. Dont get the OG Halo CE, get the reissue, I hear it looks amazing, but if you wanna see the awesome graphics we oldtimers played on you can toggle between views. Halo 2 was my favorite campaign, but that could be due to nostalgia LOL.

My understanding is their main complaint is base gameplay was changed via the insertion of the Armor Abilities as a loadout instead of being a pickup powers. There is other stuff and if you hang around here long enough, trust me you will see a long list.

While forums give the impression that Reach is the red-headed step-child (no offence to red-heads or step-children, just a figure of speech) that is not a unanimous opinion, just a very vocal one.

Reach in my opinion is a phenomenal game and a worthy successor in the Halo franchise and while not perfect, as nothing ever is, it has quenched my Halo addiction for the last year and will continue to do so to the release of Halo 4, which should be epic.

and even noticed the flaws.

YOINKER! LOL, dont try and turn this player to the darkside so quickly :stuck_out_tongue:

Hello. Quick stop for lunch. Then off again.

Well I’m primarily a rural PC gamer. The Xbox 360 is my first console at all as well. I was just never that interested in console games. But the last several years have been sparse in good PC games. I went ahead and got a used display SE Reach console bundle. The first time I saw the graphics in Reach I was stunned, and I fell in love with playing the campaign, Reach has a very realistic feel to me. Then I come here and I am kind of surprised at some of the complaints about Reach.

I am not familiar with playing online so I can’t comment on it. But I don’t see many compliments for much of anything about Reach. Maybe I just have too different of a perspective than everybody else, I don’t know.
