Re-Hire the sound guys!

Not a lot of people comment on sound but I think it is crucial in a ton of ways to FPS games. Ever since 343 took over the sound quality and depth has been ridiculous. I’ve posted on this in the past. Whoever that crack team you guys have please make sure they are back. The guns and even footsteps sound ridiculously good. It makes the game that much more satisfying. The crack of a battle rifle shot. The reload. It’s always in the forefront. It’s just killer. I’d hate to see all that go back to the former Halos which were not nearly as good. Sound is crucial to feeling like you got it done when you get that “click-clack” when you get a headshot. Beautiful. I wouldn’t change that sound at all. It’s effing perfect. Thanks 343. As a Halo player since launch 17 years ago you’ve exceeded my expectations by a long shot when you took over.

The Sound make of 343 is awesome better than Bungie

I love the headshot pop sound, hope it’s in Infinite.

re hire the team who made the H3 maps.

This please! Or give more team lead responsibilities to the guys who did The Rig and Colesium.

On topic though. The sound that pretty much any of the non-human weapons make constantly impresses me.

The headshot sound is alright, I think they can make it better, along with the br sound in general. Upgrading both would create a better experience.

The pop sound is so nice sounding, i could go to sleep with a 10 hour loop of it playing on my computer!

Man, I’ve been saying this since the sniper rifle in CEA!

I think the big difference in the sound design between the old & new games was the approach by the designers. A lot of people like to take a very organic, dynamic approach. Very clean & natural. Keep it as true to the source as possible. And I believe that’s what Marty did (he oversaw all the sound design as well as music, right?) anyway, judging by the way the music was recorded and the sound design, it has that sound to it. (I also suspect this why the guns in the first Destiny sound kinda weak like Halo 3’s … seriously, go listen to some guns in Halo 5 verses Destiny).

343 seems to take a more modern approach to it. Not afraid to take the audio too far. Slap a gate limiter on this, push the multiband compressors to the limit. Make it slam. Make it broad, make it big, make it loud. You don’t miss a sound. Every crunch of the boot is as audible as every blast of a shotgun. Not like those little pitter-patter footsteps Chief made in the original games.

And each approach is good. Both are great, depending on what you’re doing. For music, if you’re recording an acoustic folk band, you want that clean dynamic sound. A metal band? You want it slamming. I think for Halo, where you’re a 1,000lbs Spartan with a Battle Rifle and a rocket launcher in a Warthog or a tank … the loud approach is ideal.

The Halo 4 and 5 audio team are pretty ambitious. Pretty sure that they actually went to the effort of recording gunfire in public areas to give an authentic sound, and for Halo 4 they actually wanted to get a microphone into space to record sounds. Didn’t happen but that’s how much effort they put in.

Really? Thats so awesome! Props to the sound bois.

:+1: I’m hoping they keep up the good work. Infinite will be an interesting job, in that they seem to be going for the current but retro melting pot thing. Might we see a CE pistol with a traditional sound but crisper…better?! Hoping heck ya!

They got some things right, while others not so much. The movement and random techy noises are fine, but some of the mixing’s off and too many of the iconic weapons and vehicles are unrecognisable. Overall the originals were better; Halo 4 and 5’s sound design lacks identity.

Actually, Bungie did the same thing. They just modified the sounds through post-processing a lot more (or in an completely other way) than 343 did.

As for the part with the microphone in space, I’d find that pretty pointless and a waste of money and resources, given that there is no sound in space…

@Topic: Overall, I’m indifferent to most of the sound effects, but some of them stick out like a sore thumb: The warthog might be the worst offender, where the original warthog actually sounded like an ATV, the new one makes noises like the illegitimate child between an RC toy car and a lawnmower. The battle rifle also just sounds… weird, for the lack of a better word. I don’t know what exactly it is, but it has this annoying high-pitched echo to it, that just wasn’t there in Halo 2 and 3 (nor in H2A or the Halo 2 BR Req weapon). It almost sounds as if the weapon is squeaking because it hasn’t been properly oiled. In general, while I only really dislike some select few sound effects from 343’s games, I can’t really name one sound that I prefer from them over what came before, so on average I’d say it’s a step down.

The Quality of 343i’s sound is amazing however they changed how things sounded.
Banshies don’t sound the same, ghosts don’t sound the same, plasma pistols and plasma rifles are unrecognizable sound wise.
If 343i could maintain high quality as well as use the original sounds that would go a long way for making Halo feel like Halo again.

Bring Marty back and bring in the guys who did Halo: 2 Anniversary Sounds!
