Raytracing in campaign

So now that it is delayed can we expect ray tracing on launch in the campaign or not?

Is it reasonable to expect? Yes.

Will we get it? Probably not until well after launch.
Will fanboys attack you for suggesting that graphics matter and holding 343 accountable for a feature they promised? Probably yes.

Considering how last gen everything about it is, the game’s systems should have such lower requirements that they should be able to implement ray-tracing with the headroom afforded by making an Xbox One game. And though they should use dynamic res scaling, I will gladly, as would most, accept drops in resolution in favor of a solid 60 fps framerate and ray tracing.

Priority in game optimization should be framerate, lighting, and then resolution as a distant third. Look at Ratchet and Clank: 3 modes: 4k30 RT, 4K60 w/o RT, and 1440p60 RT. Not surprisingly, the consensus best mode to play the game in is 1440p60 RT. Smooth visuals and quality visuals are more important than pixel density.

Didn’t they say it would be coming in an update after Infinite’s original launch date? If so, I personally think it most likely will be at launch.

It seems like Master Chiefs visor might have it, but at the end of the day RT doesn’t matter unless it can add substantial value to the experience on top of everything else.

That was the plan before the 1 year delay. We haven’t had an update since on it.

Considering Infinite will be playable on Xbox One ray tracing will likely come once Xbox One support is dropped. I seriously doubt the base Xbox One could handle ray tracing.

Similar to how Destiny on the 360 was dropped after a while and the final DLC that came out after that could only be played on Xbox One. Xbox One support will probably be cut off in one year for Halo Infinite as that is the allotted time Microsoft said that new games would be playable on last gen.

They confirmed that after launch (when the launch was going to be in 2019) ray tracing would be added. They don’t have to wait for Xbox One support to end similar to how Watchdogs Legion has ray tracing on Series X and not on One X.

Well I hope at least the forerunner interior and cutscenes have ray tracing

there will prob be raytracing but not in the implementation everyone thinks. You can see elements in chiefs visor that would indicate some level of raytraced reflections. I find it unlikely we will be getting raytraced lighting at launch if at all. Its going to be a lower scale of raytracing given how performance heavy that system is and may only be restricted to cuitscenes for all we know.

It depends, I honestly forgot about it. But now that I think about it, the trailer they showed is probably with ray tracing on, but doesn’t necessarily mean we will get it on launch, and the delay doesn’t mean it was worked on either. It’s easy to optimise a trailer with maximum graphics and all the bells and whistles blazing. It’s another thing to turn it on in regular gameplay and have your Engine nose dive and burst into flames. I work in a game studio, trailers are usually* scripted, and if possible, cut down and purpose built* for performance and visual quality. The time frame trailers are asked for and expected also doesn’t necessarily run parallel to the planned completion date for features during a sprint. Don’t have a finished map but need a trailer in a week? Well you’re not gonna finish the map for a trailer, you’re going to shoot the trailer in the MOST finished spots for a map. Raytracing not working when you have all the assets and characters loaded? set up a small set and remove the excess or incompatible features so the game doesn’t crash when your crew act the scenes.

  • This isn’t the rule, there have been plenty of times that we naturally play several games, record them and our Cinematic team picks and chooses the best moments to represent the game.

tl;dr: Keep your hopes and expectations low for this to be there on launch.

I don’t understand why people think like this. The Xbox one will just have raytracing turned off like a majority of pc’s.

I don’t understand this herptydur about Xbone holding back features. There is a reason pc’s have graphic options people. Not every pc is equivalent or better then a Xbox series X. Some might have superior cpu and ram and just might have a graphics card incapable of raytracing.

I would almost guarantee halo infinite will run on hardware worse then the og Xbox one on minimum specs.

I hadn’t considered that. The first thing that came to mind was how the original Destiny was handled which saw its Xbox 360 support dropped while the game was still being worked on.

Yeah the main difference being is the 360 is a different architecture then the Xbox one. Making it harder to continue development for multiple architectures.
