Ratings vs CSR

Yeah, I know (not another thread about csr) but having gone through and looked at all the available titles (H3, Reach and H4) I can honestly say Halo 3’s CSR system makes much more sence for that game, but Reach’s rating system made the arena a seriously much more effective way of matching the five ranks (iron, bronze, silver, gold and onyx).

343 is not going to change the way things work now, but the rating system actually did make the most sense in small team game matching.

I agree that Halo 3 had a good CSR matching system even though I never played it much and never got anywhere with it (I also never really tried). It just seems to me that Reach’s ratings were Bungie’s way of taking the next step.

For those of you more experienced with H3’s system, I won’t argue with you (because you’ve probably played it more than me anyway) but Reach’s system made much more sense than both 3 and now 4.

Halo 3 -

Must win to rank up
Promotes Team Play, unselfish individualism
Harder to rank up due to mui and (?) being lopsided after hundreds of games
Bought 50’s suck
Boosting/Deranking
Bridging Host
Booting

Halo Reach-

One Playlist
Based on Score
Promotes selfish gameplay because you want the highest score to advance
Losing didn’t matter as much - Ties in with ^
Reset every 3 months - Threw off a lot of the community to have achievements reset
Low playlist Pop made Onyx games harder to find

Halo 4 -

A joke

Online only removes competitiveness
JIP/Backing out
Based on Score even in team games promotes selfish gameplay for a rank no one will every see.

Funny - as a Iron/Bronze player, I got tired of constantly getting put against Silver/Gold players. And after the resets, I would not be able to play for a week, so that the top players would get cleared out.

Then the top players complained about the jetpacks, etc, and particular maps and I was at a HUGE disadvantage.

Reach’s Arena was by far my favourite ranking system. I preferred the way it reset as it deterred boosters, and kept actual competitive players coming back for more. It would’ve been nice if there was a way to view your results of all previous seasons on your Service Record.

I wish Bungie would’ve included a few more playlists in the Arena hopper. Things like FFA, Objective and MLG would’ve made nice ranked playlists. They could’ve also included a rotational playlist for SWAT, Snipers, Doubles, etc.

You can see all the seasons you had a ranking in, but I think you can only view that from the player stats in-game.

@Logic of Life:
I get your point, but despite the selfish nature of Reach’s system it still effectively divided the skill levels to the extent that an iron wasn’t going to ever see an onyx or gold unless the higher ranks were doing really badly on a given day or the lower ranks were doing really good (also on a given day).

It got to the point where I could tell how the game was going to go based on the ranks on my team, or at least I’d have a good idea. While I wasn’t spot-on every time I would at leas have an idea of how aggressive to play.

I think the in-game stats only showed your last 3 seasons. I played quite a bit of Arena and there is no way for me to view my results of all the seasons I participated in, unless I were to donate to Halo Tracker.

It shows every seasons’ results in game which is why I was fine with resets in Reach.
