/rant. How is matchmaking this bad? Whats the point of MMR?

Seriously. Why have a hidden rank that is your skill and a visible one if you don’t even use the visible one. It makes it basically worthless. Why not just use the visible ranks fir matchmaking?

Not to mention how i get paired with clearly low MMR and get paired against high MMR clearly. With a positve k/d and 30% win percentage… the system is clearly broken when i have to pull off +20 to maybe get a win. Anything less is a guaranteed loss. Halo is better than this.

Clearly salty at a broken matchmaking system. Rant over. Be gentle with your criticisms.

1-13 tonight and mostly going positive. Do those posts explain how it matches like that?

Same experience here, decided to thread a session last week on twitter.

I’ll come back to this thread. 0-6 to start season 2.

All time 1.3 k/d with a 37% win percentage. That doesnt even make sense. How does matchmaking “fairly” put me in games to lose significantly more than i win when i go positive. Literally doesnt make sense.

I’m a diamond or low onyx player in reality. But the game thinks I’m supposed to be playing against Onyx 1900+ all the time.

I literally cannot play ranked because I have to tryhard like crazy to even hit a 0.5 K/D.

I’m a top 5-15% player receiving the actual gameplay experience one would expect in Silver 4 - getting dunked on in every single game. All because 343 are terrified to let actual silver 4 players get dunked on in any game ever, so they design matchmaking to punish the upper end of the bell curve while making sure bronzies and silvers get nice easy games.

The skill based matchmaking algorithms in this game are by far the worst I have ever seen in a video game, ever. I’m back to the MCC because of them after just a couple season 2 games.

Just out of interest - have you played since the mid-S1 reset? I was kind of wondering how people’s seeding MMR would be behave if they went straight from S1.1 into S2. If the S1.2 MMR drop gets applied or not?

Otherwise it’s not unusual to lose a run of placing games. They are when matchmaking is the most volatile. But it’s also taken into account. Many people have had bad placement results but still come out with the rank they expected. Remember, the quality of your opponents is taken into account.

And take this comment with a grain of salt - because I don’t know you or your game history from a bar of soap - but if you are losing a lot more games than you expect, and especially if you feel you are performing well as an individual - you may need to ask yourself what you could have done to get the team back on track. Are you using your mike? Are you playing the objective. Are you willing to sacrifice a bit of your K/D to get the team over the line.

Can you link to your game history on HaloTracker?

Would love to take a look. Always trying to get a better understanding of how matchmaking works. I’m genuinely intersted in anytime it doesn’t behave like it should.

Why in team based games I’d rather pick my own teammates instead of relying on a matchmaker to do that work for me. It’s going to always be limited on how well it can do no matter how much they can improve it compared to picking people you know you can rely on right off the bat.

If you want a consistent good time, this is probably the only way to truly make that happen.

Sure, no argument from me there. But you’re kinda missing my point, which is that this experience is consistently bad and lopsided skill distribution like this, where it was more balanced in older games when matching up with randoms.

This topic was made while i play with friends. So that point is kinda moot

No you aren’t.

The matchmaking doesn’t ever behave like it should, because the following is how the matchmaking should behave:

Social game modes

  • Matchmaking should prioritize latency and connection, perhaps very minimally taking a per-playlist MMR into account to make sure egregious mismatches aren’t happening, like a team of Bronze going up against a team of Onyx 1800s

Ranked game modes

  • Matchmaking should prioritize CSR and match exclusively based on that, with some consideration taken to ensure the best possible networking conditions.

Under no circumstances is it good to have a singular global MMR and have matchmaking make games exclusively based off that in both ranked and social modes. And yet, that’s what we have with Infinite. It is by far the worst matchmaking system in the entire industry.

I’ve been playing since the beginning at all times and its been sort of consistent. Definitely a little more tough after S1.5 update though.

And its not just “a bad run” if im at 37% winning while going positive.

Part of the equation is playing with my friends who lower MMR. Basically (obviously) it doesnt match anywhere close when we literally cant win playing together. Kind of ruins playing with your friends.

Oh and I forgot to mention from my original rant post when we were 1-13 or whatever… the 1 came from a 4v3.

Also, are you telling me, that instead of having accurate matchmaking, 343 just pairs you against better people so you get slapped all the time. Then they give you an okay ranked for being constantly bent over due to their bad system? What kind of butt-backwards matchmaking is that?

The SBMM in this game is ridiculously bad. It is especially bad when friends that aren’t the same rank try to play together. It may be bearable when they are playing together (still pretty bad) but it totally messes up their MMR for when they play on their own.

This game is totally designed around players playing by themselves and only by themselves. This new season has made that quite apparent.

For real. Whats the point of CSR right now? Its practically meaningless if im Diamond 5 getting paired against Onyx 1900. If thats supposedly where im supposed to be, how am I actually supposed to get there when I play top ranked people while at a lower CSR? Broken is an understatement.

I feel like the mmr is designed for you to play by yourself…I had high onyx guys that literally only solo queued.

It’s the only way I can see the MMR system “working”. Solo queue only AND slayer only.

Agreed mmr is kind of skewed for objective unless it really changes your score per minute significantly, I think that has some sort of impact on it.

And you only ever play that one playlist.

So yeah, if you only play one playlist, and that playlist is slayer, and you only play by yourself, and you never ever deviate from this in any way, the MMR system “works”.

Great job 343. Really fantastic stuff. Such an improvement from the old 1-50 system in Halo 3.

Thank God you’re here. I’m a bit undecided about what to have for breakfast this morning. And seeing as you obviously know me better than I even know myself… that’s a crisis avoided.

Nah. I’m all for prioritising close/even matches. You know, fun for everyone (not just the good players stomping everyone every game).
