Does Halo in general even really need ranks at all? I heard from these guys on the internet talking about video games that you shouldn’t put a ranking system in just because you think the player will play longer if you add them it.
I don’t think Halo needs ranks. (excluding 4)
Halo CE - It worked perfectly fine without ranks.
Halo 2 - I didn’t really play Halo 2 online but I’m sure ranks weren’t really needed.
Halo 3 - I never paid any attention to ranks at all, they never did anything, they were just like a shiny badge. But they did rank you by skill so that’s a plus.
Halo Reach - You need to rank up to unlock armor, this I hated, I just think that you should have to unlock achievements to get armor.
Halo 4 - Halo 4 has customizable loudouts so I guess ranks are kinda needed, unless they just made it so everyone has everything unlocked anyway. Plus I don’t really think custom classes should be in Halo anyway.
Almost every game now a days has some sort of ranking system, and sometimes I just think they aren’t needed, this is just my opinion on the manner, I know it’t cool to be a rank 130SR or whatever, but I just think they aren’t needed, unless it defines you by skill like Halo 3, and even then they aren’t truly needed in the game, if you play just for the ranks, or that’s your main reason for playing, you’re doing it wrong IMO.
That’s just my cup of tea, but what’s your opinion on the matter?

I simply want “VISIBLE” ranks so I know I am getting matched with the right skill level of players. I do not want to play people who just got the game nor do I want to play a team of PROs. Ranks in Halo 2 were great. Cheaters ruined it yes, but the system in place today is far superior than what we had back in the day. I also believe these ranks should be visible. I really do not want to check people’s levels or my own level on my smartphone or laptop. It seems unnecessary. I play for fun but my idea of fun is competitiveness not your cup of tea but differing opinions is good. I do not see why we cannot all be catered to. Ranks would help this out tremendously by properly matching my team with the correct skill level. I used to love those 49-49 games back in the day praying I wasn’t the last death letting my team down; however, if I got the last kill it was that much better driving me to play to the point of addiction lol.
Visible ranks will prevent the boredom of players. Don’t forget not everyone just plays for fun, the competitive community need something to keep them interested in the game.
Halo 3 had a population of 200k after a year of release, 150k in ranked often.
Ranks provide motivation to keep playing, keep progressing. It’s a shame you didn’t play Halo 2 because ranks combined with clans was mind blowingly good.
Halo CE didn’t have MP.
Halo 2 had some ranking issues but not anything that ruined MP.
Halo 3, Excellent ranking system. Getting a 50’ was the goal and gave you creds from friends and proof that you were a greater player.
Halo Reach. No ranks, only Play to Unlock. That sucked. Trueskill barely impacted the game.
Halo 4. I Hope ranks come soon.
I wish the old school players could storm this forum and convince all this new players what is the real deal and how Halo realy should be like. Sadly most of us have left leaving the casuals making greater impact on the forum and the decisions of 343
