ranks and armory

Reading so many oppinions of reach and halo 3, and playing reach for quite some time, I’ve come up with an idea for Halo 4. Now if you’ve seen my other threads you know I dislike commendations and the whole credit system. Simply put having credits and commendations and ranks is an excuse to farm the game. Without credits daily and weekly challenges won’t have much use other than to hold your interest, although you shouldn’t need challenges to keep a game fresh and exciting.

On topic, my idea is this:

Ranks::: Get rid of all the ranks after General 4, or make the rank cap General 5, like a 5 star general. To get a higher rank you need to perform better in multiplayer. Basically the better you do the higher rank you can get promotted to, meanwhile if you’re not in the same league as a hardcore gamer you will have a lower rank. Same goes for matchmaking, so that pros are matched against pros and casual gamers are matched against people of their own relative skill level. Ranking shouldn’t reply on how many wins you can get in multiplayer matchmaking but instead on your performance.

As far as the armory goes, with credits eliminated and ranks given based on skill level, armory pieces would then be granted upon reaching a certain rank. The best stuff would be available to those at max rank. If you perform badly you lose your rank and get demoted, armor pieces that required a higher rank would be revoked and the default used instead. Losing your look as well as your rank could be incentive to play better for those who are of a more competitive nature.

I’ve read plenty of posts where people want basically another reach. Credits, commendations, more ranks, more armory items. This is going to be 343’s first official game so they’re probably not going to make it like reach. I want to see a new halo game, where the graphics are not the emphasis, where you don’t need to farm the game to stay interested.

That’s my idea, feel free to share your thoughts.

Why would you want armor to be about skill? That makes no sense to me.

I like ranks and I like credits and commendations. I want it all Daddy!

I recommended a 1- 50 ranked playlist that was only opened by reaching a generals rank in casual play. it never got any traction but it served the same purpose. To make you earn it.

1-50
cR system replaces xp system
Beginning ranks you get by getting certain amount cR
After that you need a certain # rank and earn a certain amount of cR to get to next rank.
Armor is obtained by buying it through cR but each piece of armor will need to be unlocked by performing a certain requirement before being able to buy it, examples would be beating legendary, getting a certain rank, obtaining a certain achievement/amount of achievements/all achievements, beating a lvl of the game with a certain point score, performing any other requirements.
Ranks should include all h3 ranks and any new halo reach ranks that halo 3 didn’t have prior to general grade 4.

This would be the perfect ranking system for both causal and competitive players.

Make me play 500 odd games in casual before i get to play for a rank?

You crazy?

Numbered ranks please!

My Youtube channel for awesome
Halo videos/commentaries!

Maybe based on playlist rank similar to Halo 3 but not 1-50…just wouldnt be fun for ppl that never get past 25-30ish.

Better players reach higher ranks first so they will get the newer cooler armour first

Competitive Playlists - Halo 2’s Ranking System

Social Playlists - Reach’s Ranking System

o.O

The way it is you just farm reach for credits and commendations to rank up. Buying armoury items is ridiculously easy, you just need to push challenges/cc’s/boosting as much as you can. There needs to be a different way after experiencing reach, one preferably that doesn’t promote idling over trying to get better. Make it worth my while to try for an armoury piece, don’t just hand it all to me on a silver platter.

i think the actual sistem is good, it can encourage little boys to rank up the same if they’re bad at playing making them stay on halo, btw 2° character on mm should hav his own armory in reach they should put an armory for elites…no?..ok…maybe some other time :frowning:

Sorry but this is a bad idea. First of all, forcing people to play ranked to get all “casual” ranks/armor is just a bad idea, really.
¨Then, a visible rank or 1-50 means nothing for matchmaking. What Halo 4 needs is dedicated servers and working true skill, nothing else. Working true skill = you face people who are at a similar skill no matter “rank”.
Visible rank = you pay some random kid to get you a 50s so you can feel cool, until a 12 years old ruin you in MM, over and over again. Halo 3 proved it, 50s were never hard to beat, they generally sucked, while a 45 usually was really good. That said, I didn’t like ranked (to many derankers, AFK etc) so I stopped playing after I got all the achievements ^^

I think the Credit system should stay. You should earn credits essentially the same way you did in Reach, but with some differences.

Credits for Forge:
A lot of community members, myself included, spent a lot of time on Reach in the Forge mode, without earning any credits. I understand why, it would be hard to regulate whether someone was actually forging, or simply leaving their controller on while they go to a movie. But a lot of games can judge whether people are AFK (booting them from servers, like BF3/MW), they need to work out a system to give forgers some credits.

Credits for Customs:
Surely they could make specific gametypes that are pre-programmed to earn you real credits, like basic Team Slayer, Oddball etc. As soon as you edit a gametype it can’t earn you decent credits, that way they could allow you to earn credits if you play competitive customs and reach the score limit, possibly in a certain time limit (so if it’s too quick, you earn less credits); at least some attempt to let people who like to play customs earn some cashola.

They need a proper competitive ranking system on the side of all of this. There was NO pressure in Reach to win matches. You still wanted to perform well, but I know I wasn’t personally that worried about my team, whereas Halo 2 and 3 I was constantly team-shooting, watching my team mates and trying to secure the win, rather than the highest k/d. When rank is involved and there is some need to win in order to progess that rank, it makes teamplay more important and it means that we can retain that Halo feel, where playing as a team was necessary for all players to succeed, rather than this new-aged COD-style lonewolf gameplay; which is what I feel, was the biggest issue with Reach.

I still enjoyed Reach, I’m not a hater, it had its issues but so did every other Halo game. I warmed to it due to the far better netcode, from an Australian’s standpoint, they did a good job with looking after international players and my connections were always better than they were in Halo 3 thanks to local searching; which overall allowed for me to have a better multiplayer experience than Halo 2/3.

Numbered ranks is the only way to go as far as the competitive community goes though, I fall into all categories; I spent my entire Halo 2 career essentially in Custom games, I loved Forge in Halo 3 and Reach and I also got my 50 in Halo 3. I have a stake in both the casual and competitive agendas and I think that the return of numbered ranks, while also allowing credits to be earned accross the board and custom games given some revitilisation, Halo 4 could have the best multiplayer of the series.

You know after playing more and more multiplayer and watching my bpr slowly improve I remember reading how it is calculated by your assists, kills, deaths, betrayals, and wins in matchmaking right? Why doesn’t it include games you have quit?

How about having the bpr and rank connected. Add in games quit to the bpr as well. Maybe if rank advancement could be tied to the BPR with games quit being tracked, just maybe it could deter people from leaving prematurely. This idea is now crossing into the quitting problem as well as rank advancement. Maybe if people quit too many games their bpr gets lower eventually resulting in demotion and possible loss of armoury items until they improve their stats.

Armor based on skill? I don’t think so.

As a Halo Veteran I think I speak for all of the little people when I say not all of us can be Master Chief.

All I want is my Hayabusa back!

> Why would you want armor to be about skill? That makes no sense to me.

Yes! Armor should be for customization to make each player feel and look unique rather than having all the skilled players wearing one thing, and casual players wearing default. IMO customization helps players feel invested in their character. And even in an FPS individuality can make the game more enjoyable.
