Combining Custom Challenges with Firefight is extremely good, the payouts are good for simple things like 100-200 multi-kills or get kills with X weapon or headshots.

Firfight Custom challenges are quite fruitful. I set 2 every thursday, sometimes 3. 800 kills and 400 headshots in 3 hours. After the 400 headshots which in gruntpoc gives you the 400/800 kills I do another 400 headshots sometimes.

Use DMR/SR loadout
All the suggestions in these posts are great for credits, but the best payouts are in Firefight Doubles under the Arcade option. Also, if you get tired of FF, then how about the messages you get when the game starts of promoted jackpot weekend playlists work out well with higher than avg. slots.

CC’s have a min of 3 hours. The 400 headshots takes less than an hour for me, and the other 400 takes about the same, so 1.5-2 hours for both, or all 3 if you feel like dmr/pistol. I play gruntpocalypse usually, but also mix it up with sniper fight or skirmageddon. On installation 04 an easy way to go deathless in skirmageddon is to drive the hog to the hut on the other side of the map, the one where you usually find an ammo crate, health pack, and 343 guilty spark. Blockade the entrance and stay inside, leave a small opening to shoot. That way you have the dmr, health, and grenades. Choose the bubble shield if you want, but I usually go for hologram. I always pick up the needle rifle and use the dmr as primary - the needles are to force them to dodge if your shields go down.
Multiplayer custom challenges of course give the highest reward. It is 5k max reward in campaign, 10k for firefight, and 30k for multiplayer.
