Ranking system

I feel like the game has a completely flawed ranking system, I don’t think I should be punished just because my team doesn’t win the game!
If I finish on 20 kills for 10 deaths and the rest of the team can’t manage 10 each to get us to 50 why should I be demoted!!
The system should still award players who perform well in a match! For example a positive KD or point captures in a game!
AFK players and poor performances from teammates shouldn’t determine my progression in the game!

we know it’s broken. post this in the matchmaking forum. 343 looks at that, they tend to shy away from here although they do sometimes say hi.

Microsoft’s TrueSkill system is still the backbone of all Xbox games including Halo 5: Guardians’ matchmaking. A player’s TrueSkill level going into a new game brings with it a provisional rating based on their overall matchmaking history on Xbox Live; though, under the new game their standard deviation will be wide (reflecting no experience) which means the initial performances will be quite impactful. A similar standard deviation is why 10 matches are necessary before a player will be assigned a Competitive Skill Rank (CSR) for a particular playlist.

The placement matches that a player plays to earn their CSR within Arena is measuring their individual performance against all the other individuals within the match; teammates included. The CSRs use Microsoft’s TrueSkill system to determine whether or not a player is performing above or below expectations according to the TrueSkill levels of their opponents and teammates and makes the necessary adjustments to their TrueSkill levels based on the match’s outcome. Prior to earning a playlist CSR the matchmaking system depends solely on a player’s TrueSkill level (combined with their teammates) to find relatively fair opponents, but afterward it will factor in a player’s playlist CSR to help refine the search in relation to team play and game type.

Once a player is given a divisional rank for a particular playlist based on their “placement” performances in relation to the TrueSkill levels they competed against (and with) then moving up and down the tiers within the division they got placed into (or numerical number within Onyx) is based solely on match outcomes (wins verse losses); in other words, within team-based game types their CSRs are no longer influenced by the individual performance they put up as it’s affect by team play. If a player is able to win consistently enough they can earn the ability to go up to the next divisional rank, but they can never lose enough to drop below the divisional rank they’re in (this is meant to prevent people from trying to delevel).

All in all, Microsoft’s TrueSkill system is the main component factoring into a player’s CSR as well as driving the general matchmaking search system; although, the playlist CSRs do provide skill references to the search process that are team related and game type specific. The individual performances during the placement stage and the ability to win matches after receiving a CSR seem to be the means by which most try to understand CSRs, but people need to understand that there’s much more factoring into it then just those two things on the surface. Also, the more experience a player puts into the game, and playlists, the more reliable and accurate their TrueSkill and CSR should become. In the end, as people’s TrueSkill levels and CSRs become more reliable the issue shouldn’t be with the accuracy of your rank, but towards the population health of the game as it’ll have the greatest affect on the system’s ability to put ideal matches together.

It’s not even slightly broken. It’s set the way it should’ve been. Halo 2/3 had a broken ranking system. Halo 4 didn’t really even have one… The TrueSkill rank makes games more competitive, even when relaxed. I’m not sure how it’s broken at all.

every halo has had you rank down when u lose even if u are in first on the losing team. U may not rank down as much if you place first on losing team but u still rank down. Its a team game. In basketball or any sport if u score 100 points but your team loses you still go down in standing or playoff chances. Same thing in halo team based playlists. In free for all as long as you are in top 4 u rank up. Maybe thats more your type of playlist since u wont have to worrie about your team dragging u down. If u play the best you win! Or its always good to play team slayer and such with friends who communicate. That helps alot I rarely play team slayer unless I have my team!

Think you’re probably right! That way I’ve only got myself to blame if I perform badly! Either that or I find some people to play with in team games that communicate and work well together!
