Ranking System: Why Can You Place So High?

I don’t understand why you can be placed in the upper divisions like Onyx and Diamond fresh out of your qualifying matches. They seem far too easy to achieve. Is the Ranking system broken or was this intended?

Honestly I think it rewards players for being honorable enough to finish matches. I reached onyx in FFA with almost a solid 1 k/d. Granted I made the top 3 plenty of times, but I’ve never actually won. Maybe once. It’s weird, but it’s not just based on kills and wins. It’s also based on you finishing the match.

Luck I THINK…that, or there’s just some really REALLY bad people out there. I wasnt even trying and I got Diamond.

Intended. Go for Champion now

It just doesn’t feel like much of an accomplishment to be in these divisions. There should be more of a climb rather than just being placed in the highest spots IMO.

I’m sure there are some pretty bad people, but I think you should have to work a little bit harder to be in the highest divisions.

In Mobas like LoL or Smite, people usually get to Bronze-Gold V with their promotion games. Then you have to work your way up.

Getting placed in Onyx after 10 games feels kinda ridiculous.

As far as my experience in FFA goes, it seems to me that the system tends to start grouping you with players close to your skill before your first 10 games are up.

Also, if you’re already ranked in a different playlist, I think it takes that into account as well. So if you feel like you’re doing poorly and getting rewarded for it, pay attention to the skill level of your opponents with whom you’re somewhat keeping up with. Finishing 3rd in a match full of Onyx and Diamond tier people means a lot even if you don’t win the match. At least as far as FFA goes.

I’m hoping someone will be able to bring us more concrete information soon.

I agree. In LoL, even when they do a soft reset of the ranks at the end of the year/season, the highest division any player could place in was Platinum.

I’d also like to point out that the type of people who would be posting on a forum like this are probably more likely to be gamers who have an edge over the vast majority of casual players. So the percentage of people actually in high tier ranks is probably smaller than it may seem to people reading comments on this forum.

Not sure I agree with that. Just because someone doesn’t post to a forum, that does not make them a casual gamer.

I got into diamond for Team Arena. I honestly don’t think I’m good enough for diamond.

May have something to do with ranks resetting every month

I didn’t mean to insinuate that people NOT on the forums were casual, but instead that people who are spending time on the forums are more likely to be of the more serious breed of gamers. That doesn’t necessarily mean all serious gamers will be posting.

Heck I consider myself a competitive type of player and these are some of the first posts I’ve made on any gaming forum as I’m more of a fly under the radar type (although I’m making more of an attempt to be more a part of this community than I have with past games). My point was that the people we DO see represented here probably represent a small portion of the general player base. So simply seeing a lot of people here reaching Diamond and Onyx does not indicate a large percentage of all players reaching that status.

I base my theory on the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a large gap between 1500 Elo rating at Onyx and the ratings at which we’re seeing the top 200.

Haven’t figured it out yet as well. Got placed Champion Top 150 after 10 matches in Slayer (I did well, but I felt Champion was too high). Got placed Diamond 1 after 10 games in Breakout (Won 10 out of 10 games with a solid KD). Nobody actually seems to know how the placement matches work. I guess it’s a mix of Win/Loss, K/D and the skill of the people you win or lose against.

But I agree. High ranks are too easy to achieve.

Ok, well getting placed within the top 200 of ALL players after just 10 games is pretty ridiculous I guess. But then, if by game 5 it was matching you with other champions and you were still doing fairly well, then maybe it’s not so far fetched.

shrug Maybe we’ll have to wait for the first season reset to really get a feel for it.

Yeah, see for me, I wasn’t playing people in champions, I just noticed that after my second match I was playing with a ton of other Onyx players. I only made it to Onyx 1, but thats because I’m really bad with Swatnums. I’d like to say it placed me fairly, as ever since Reach all I’ve ever really played has been Swat and Team Slayer, and other Onyx players actually challenge me.

I have a friend who I was helping get qualified in Swat, I was already ranked at this point and he was having a hell of a time struggling with the people it matched me up with. As soon as I left, he went 20 and 2 for his last game and got Platinum 1. He’s gotten Platnum 1 for Team Slayer as well, so it seems pretty consistent.

Yeah, this seems to corroborate my theory.

same as action alex I got onyx 1500 without winning a single match and having barely a 1 kd. I came the top 4 every match.
