My friends and I still play this game pretty regularly. Ranks are 84, 61, 56 and 18. Nothing too serious but we are good players. We generally have a good time but recently (seems like within the last couple of months) we play nothing but a team of 130s and above with a couple of 150s in there. It makes no sense and it use to not be this way. I rarely, if ever, saw someone in the 100s now it’s every game.
Its turned our casual fun get together into an unfair pvp night full of us getting kicked around and an early night. Now we don’t even play.
I don’t care about ranking up whatsoever. Just want a fair game. A group of our ranks should never be playing a team of 4 all above 100 and at least 2 every time above 140.
Please explain. Did something change in the last couple of months to the ranking system? Or am I missing something and it is by design that a group of 4 under 100 are playing a group of 4 over 100? Without an explanation is seems it’s finally time to move on.

The ranks you are referring to are just Spartan ranks which show how much time people have spent playing Halo. There is a hidden skill rank that matches you up against people close to your skill level.

Spartan rank has no bearing on anything… it just shows how much playtime someone has in H5: at this point in the game the fact you’re only facing people near the end of the grind to 152 (especially given 343 announcing a couple of months back about anyone getting 152 before Infinite releases getting something in Infinite).
I sympathise if you’re not having fun and enjoying the game like you used to and want to - given the matches I keep seeming to get at the moment I totally sympathise - but low population even getting a game is difficult now: getting a good match is harder
It’s something called matchmaking rating (or MMR for short). Spartan Rank only tells you how much someone has played Halo, not exactly how skilled they are. MMR is determined from your in-game performance, and the game matches you with other players who perform similarly to you using that data.
Ok. Thank for the replies and the explanation. That makes a lot more sense and I appreciate it. Just seemed like something changed recently so was curious and totally agree…getting a good match is difficult these days. Guess we will just have to tough it out!
Many Halo 5 players have been focusing on grinding their Spartan Ranks to the max level of 152. This was in response to 343 saying that the next game, Halo Infinite, would reward players who reached SR 152 in Halo 5. 343 further stated that players should not expect some large reward for reaching 152, but that probably didn’t stop people from grinding levels.
As others have said, Spartan Rank has no bearing on skill. For skill rankings, you’ll want to look at their rating in ranked playlists (Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc.).
The numbers mean nothing skill wise, and have 0 bearing on who’s matched with who. It’s just how much you’ve played. Even with that said matching rank 130 is not bad at all. To be level 130 you’d only have to earn 4,380 EXP per day since launch (A single 20 minute FF game with a good boost can get you 25k). Obviously not everyone has been playing since launch but my point is level 130 is not that hard to get.

Those numbers mean everything and nothing. On the one hand they are people who simply played a lot Halo, on the other hand, however, we must admit that playing so much could also lead to more experience. XD
In any case, beyond the numbers, I found myself in your same situation. Matches that were previously tackled now are not anymore and I find myself too often playing with really good players, which is frustrating.
I also tried to play in pairs with my girlfriend, who is of a lower degree and skill than my profile, and yet we find only people who asphalt like an highway! XD (
This is an Italian expression, be patient)
Closed this off a few days ago, but missed actually responding with the reason.
OP looks to have had their question answered and as this isn’t really a support issue, re-directing any future replies to the matchmaking feedback topics in the Matchmaking forums
