Ranked: systems, modes, etc.

Curious what the ranked is going to be like. Im hoping it will be a lot like the Halo 5 ranked which imo was the best part of that game, with placement games and ranks rather than a 1-50 system. Also interested what modes there will be and maybe some extra high level pvp on top of ranked.

I would like to see a good 1v1 mode implemented. Hopefully better than Halo 5 head to head which just turned into who could get the power weapons. Maybe it would be BR (or whatever starting weapon) only or something.

I also wanna see the return of the Extermination mode from Halo 5 as that is probably the most intense mode Halo has offered and can offer clutch moments which are a lot rarer in a game like Halo which doesn’t have any other limited respawn modes.

I wanna see options for 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 and possibly even a BTB ranked mode.

I loved Halo 5 rank system and hope it returns.

I loved the old 1-50 the most however the Halo 5 system was good. I honestly would like to see a mixture of the two to be honest. Throw 1 - 50 in a “classic” ranked playlist. I don’t see why we can’t have the best of both worlds if the population is there to fill out the game modes.

The big advantage of Halo 5’s system is that is less intrusive when match making has to go wide.

Nobody is really bothered by a Gold player in a team vs Platinum in another team… yet the difference in skill level can be as much as 23* on the old 1-50 scale.

  • my (probably bad) maths; Onyx starts at a CSR of 1500… which gives each a CSR of 300 for each division (Bronze to Diamond) and 50 for each tier (1 to 6). If we assume that the old level 50 started at the beginning of Diamond 3 (CSR of 1300) this gives a CSR of 26 for each level 1 to 50. A player of Gold 1 can be as low as Rank 23 on the old scale, and a Platinum 6 can be as high as Rank 46 - which gives us a difference of 23 ranks.

I don’t think the old 50 would work anymore. It was such a broad grouping from Diamond 3 all the way up to Onxy/Champ. It really doesn’t give the really good players (ie. not me) a chance to shine.

This is part of the experience hardcore classic players want though. Getting a rank past 40 in Halo 2 was incredibly difficult whereas Halo 3 made it easier. I am just saying have a throwback classic mode for MCC players that want to jump over from MCC sometimes.

I personally wouldn’t mind the swap over to a newer ranking system(moving from 1-50)

I think more importantly than the ranking system…(cause either way it’ll be the same thing just visually different) is rewards for hitting ranks. I don’t care if I hit rank 45 or if I’m diamond 1 or whatever. Just give me -Yoink- lol. I want cosmetics and nameplates to show that I’m -Yoinking!- good ykno?

The perfect ranking system would be Military ranks for your overall xp progression and 1-50 for playlists with ranked having that but also bronze-Onyx.

Halo 2’s ranking system was by far the best.

Yeah, I personally hated the seasonal and ranking approach of Halo 5… It just felt meaningless ranking up and having it reset every few months, I was never into it. I loved the fact that 1-50 combined with XP progression General etc. in Halo 3 meant that there was a permanent Rank to achieve and work towards and everyone new what it meant. Diamond, Gold, Onyx, Platinum etc was confusing and meaningless. I get the argument that there was often a huge skill gap among 50’s and that needs to be improved upon. Perhaps the top 100-200 players at Level 50 could have a flaming effect behind it or something to show the equivalent “Champion” status… so people knew they were the ‘best of the best’ in the playlist.

Yep. Love this idea.

I think Halo 2 was pretty much based on the original ELO system (from chess). The slow movement would have been due to the way Bungie set the variables.

From this and into Halo 3 TrueSkill was born… and then later TrueSkill2 for more recent games.

But still, essentially based on ELO. Just with extra parameters and tweaks.

I didn’t mind the seasons. I think it would have been better if your rank wasn’t reset on your side (after all, your internal rank wasn’t reset) but you just had to play the ‘qualifying’ games before your rank was displayed in public. That way you had an incentive to play regularly and couldn’t just sit on a ‘personal best’. Maybe the best way is to abandon seasons and just have it that you have to have played three games in the last fortnight (or whatever) to have a displayed rank.

The permanent rank in previous games was abused way too much to ever come back.

And I don’t have a problem with 1-50 coming back (although I prefer the H5 divisions)… just that it needs to be spread evenly across the skill levels. The only thing is that people who used to be 50 ‘back in the day’ may not be so happy if they are only a 35 now (if you spread 1-50 from a CSR of 0 to 1850).

As a big competitive player myself halo 5 definitely smashed it in that regard

My hopes are if the Halo 5 ranking system comes back, that they make the seasons a bit longer.

I quit Halo 5 Guardians competitive approximately in the middle of 2018 cause I bought a PC.

I liked so much the ranking system, even more of the classic 1-50 of Halo 3. I hope it’ll proposed again in Halo Infinite.
I miss so much play SWAT mode!
It’s still like 2018 or something is changed?

I think the only change they have made is to add a bit of bias to the amount of CSR lost if you lose the game.

It’s a bit frustrating now because you seem to drop too much CSR for losing a game… but I think that has a lot to do with the wider matches the game has to do with the relatively low population still playing.

The problem with Halo 5’s ranking system is you need to play 10 matches to get placed, and then a season later your rank gets wiped and you have to do it again. Unless I’m remembering that wrong? I haven’t played Halo 5 in a looong time.

I’m pretty sure your rank doesn’t get ‘wiped’. It’s retained internally and used to match your ‘ranking’ games.

Regardless, it only takes TrueSkill a handful of games to re-rank you pretty quickly.

The problem is that people tend to drop rank a bit with each season. Partly because they may not have played in a little while… and partly because I remember reading somewhere that the system errs on the side of a lower external rank when you start (but allows you to rank up to match your internal rating pretty quickly).

I think we definitely need a regular ‘reset’. The old fashioned permanent system was so widely abused.

I would make your rank visible to yourself at all times (so never ‘reset’) but only make it public if/when you have played a certain number of games recently. For example three games in the last fortnight. We know that it only takes a handful of games for TrueSkill2 to re-gauge your level.

Could just be me, but I felt like playing 10 games just to get your rank back was a bit too tedious. Like, after I lost my rank, I didn’t bother getting it back. The problem is there are multiple playlists, and having to play each one consistently just to maintain my rank burns me out.

Combine halo 5s skill based ranka with halo 3s progression ranks. Make rank resets something which only occurs once a year.
