What we need is a basic ranking system that provides accurate matchmaking. Pretty much what we have now. And this suits 97%+ plus of the population. We can happily play Bronze to Onxy and get on with having some fun. And hopefully improving.
For the top few % who need to show off - lets have an elite class of “Champions”. I don’t know numbers wise… but let’s say the top 1-2%.
Then during the season run a “Tournament of Champions”.
If any ranked game has two teams of Champions, and everyone has 50ms ping or less, then the game counts for Championship points. It can be announced at the beginning of the match.
At the end of the season give out awards for the top Champs.
At least the system has a chance to sort players out properly. Even if only on a regional basis.
One thing I noticed is that your placement in your own team seems to matter a lot in ranking up or down. And I hate this because it promotes competition between the players of the same team.
I’m usually a more passive kinda player. So I’ll go something like let’s say 10-4 in one game. But since my teammates went 30-28 and 26-22 I’ll barely rank up for being 3rd. I think that’s a lame system. Someone here said it rewards damage per minute or something and that really seems to be the case.
You still don’t get it… The system isn’t functioning the way it says it does.
Countless games where I’m gaining 1-3 points and dropping 1 game and you lose 3-4 matches worth of points, sometimes it’s even worse than that. Common response to that is, well you’re just favored in your games. Well, stop giving me favorable games EVERY game then, give me games where I have the potential to gain those 10+ CSR gains instead of these 1 point matches.
It’s infuriating when you spend hours playing and all of it is gone from dropping 1 loss and it was a sweat fest and you barely lost to begin with. It’s demoralizing and honestly makes you not want to keep playing because it feels pointless at times.
If you are predicted to win 18/20 games your win ratio would be 90%, but that is all within expectation. So if you only win 15/20, you are underperforming against the expectation. If you won 20/20 then you would be performing better than expected.
It’s been explained to you many times. The system cannot consistently find higher rated opponents because you’ve been stacking in the top 1%. This is a problem all top CSR players tend to face and the reason why most Champion players have extremely slow progress but 80+% win ratios in Halo 5.
Put it this way, if I only played against lower rated players with my old team, my win ratio would be 100%. That doesn’t mean I’m worthy of the very top Onyx. If you want to see big CSR gains then you need to stop losing the important games the system does offer you against better opponents. Or don’t stack for a while so the game can find you opponents of the same skill level so you can prove your are deserving. As I’ve said congrats on all the wins but it proves nothing to the system when you’re beating worse players.
The only way the system could work better is if there were more players, the issue is you don’t have other high ranking teams to play consistently and if you did, your win ratio would likely be going down, as it should.
So I got to make a quick post to make sure this stays alive. But after this lengthy discussion in this forum, I’ve come across a new nightmare. The true skill rank system is now creating even more unplayable matches. My buddy said I had one match where a good team will get it to 99 on oddball then drop it, and proceed to lay waste. All in the hopes of patting those stats…so if the other team that isn’t good, or as good I should say. The lesser team has to stay there for the full duration of that period, and absorb that abuse otherwise they will get egregiously deranked from escaping such torture. Thats a long time of absolute dying and no fun. Hearing that disgusted me. The sad part is he said he’s seen this a few times at his level.
So again While the system is statistically accurate it judges you solely based on how you perform via kda. it ignores too many other statistical elements that you do in matches. This has created a hyper-aggressive community not doing the objectives just trying to stat pat. Like if a kid starts going negative in a match I watch them just hide instead of contributing because it is the best option for them. I feel for the players that get trapped. I think most players would be doing all these crazy things if they weren’t in such fear of losing their rank all the time, and they were getting a general decent gain for winning…
My buddies and I have left rank ranked playlist. It was fun at first, but since ranking up it become a grind that left us feeling stressed. Since we can’t play all the time being in our 30s now. This is a letdown since ranked is all we really like to do besides a few big teams. We just know over overall experience is better outside of ranked now the way it stands.
You know being a 20+ year halo guy I’m not really in the weeds with all the cosmetics and battle pass honestly I could care less about that crap. I guess it’s a younger generational gamers thing. I feel like that’s the sole focus of all these updates and all I want is a balanced fair game play more ranked playlist and some classic maps. I don’t give a crap about these outfits, challenges, and battle passes.
Dude seriously, you just say the same thing over and over. I’m completely aware of this. But it’s not that simple due to smurfs using lower accounts. The system is flawed and you just wont accept it, it’s that simple.
Like said I said you disagree…most other aren’t with you on that. Just look at all these threads beside this one. I have no problem hearing your side. My only goal is to continue this thread in order for it to hopefully reach the right places. If your sick of me simply move along. I’m mean that’s why they have forums.
The "journey " is what I perceive as the madness and frustration when I read some of what people are saying here. The swings of the aftermath met with face palms of “why?”
You know…perhaps if there wasn’t just ONE ranked playlist in the game…people would migrate to other playlists and start their journey there. I think the buzz kill exists for multiple reasons. It could very quite possibly just be that a person has reached their peak already…but to see themselves yoyo in rank at times I suppose just creates a frustrating experience when if another unplayed playlist existed for them they’d just say welp… Let’s try this playlist out. It would occupy much of their time, and I wouldn’t imagine wouldn’t just reach their ceiling extremely fast. Though I guess that would depend on different factors.
When you have 1 playlist to play though…and you’re that frustrated with the experience…man. speaks for itself I guess.
I would love more. Best part of Halo 5 was grinding to Onyx in playlists whether I liked them or not. I never used to like SWAT in Halo 3, but I love it now. Not in Infinite, it’s super boring unranked.
Personally I would love to see Doubles, FFA, SWAT and Attrition Ranked.
Although we need some other weapons like DMR to keep SWAT tasty and varied.
People suck. It’s not necessarily the “fault” of TrueSkill - which does as advertised.
That’s awful.
But on a sidenote it’s pretty much how a lot of players like to play. Typically the ones who want SBMM taken out of social playlists so they can spend all day playing with their food.
Kills per minute. And it’s a weighting. Not a sole parameter.
The horrible thing is that people are probably spending all their time and effort grinding kills (and making other’s miserable) for a minimal boost to an already shaky value.
Sadly it’s not just ranked. People have been doing this for years in objective games.
I pretty much gave up on Grifball because in the handful of games I played there were so many people there just to fluff up their K:D stats.
The current system can provide that.
They just need to remove the endpoints that are being abused.
Remove the visible MMR so that (toxic) people have no reason to grind it. Just have basic ranks to earn.
Take away the K:D from Oddball. Don’t even keep track of it.
I really think we need to put the focus of fun back into each game. Make a fuss about the medals earned in the game. Who was the MVP? (in Slayer this could be the player who did the most damage that ended up in a kill). Show a highlight reel / replay of the best killing streak.
Take the focus off the MMR and put it back on the game just played.
We need a lot more than what the game has right now man…dude…i wish this game was just a normal paid game. Like I get that it’s free…more people can try it…yay we got cross play…but every single positive is met with a negative that just drowns It out. Like there’s so many that I don’t even have to list them since there’s 100s of threads that have already done that for me.
On the flip side…at least it will still be free within all these 10 years. I’m willing to bet that after some time…we will all see bundled season passes that cut price into fractions of what a loyal player paid sticking with this game each and every season, each and every year.
Like…you don’t gotta pay…but…its kinda like you got to…
I played apex for a pretty brief amount of time and paid for nothing. The skins, weapon skins, little banner stuff…all these things I got by just playing the game and choosing what I could unlock. Theres be like some currency to collect in the matches themselves too.
Most was cosmetic stuff…which…I mean has never been super important to me but even for halo infinite…man the process of all that stuff just flat out feels wrong. They’re also 2 very different games and I honestly only played the 3v3 during my time, but so much of that game felt pretty dang good. It’s not halo tho…so…here i am lol. I love the core game play of halo too much…but the experience on this one feels hollow sometimes man like…I’m already finding myself staring at the screen at times just…contemplating if I should just shut it off. Nothing to do. The other ranked playlist don’t exist.
The playlist split I’m pretty sure was not anything to do with being free to play, they were just being cautious due to input splits I think. Right now while we have 1 ranked mode, it’s actually 3 different playlists. If they added 3 per ranked playlist it would not work. 6 ranked gametypes would mean 18 population splits. Very bad.
Until they had mass population figures they wouldn’t have been able to fully understand how this would work, for instance Crossplay might not be viable and one input might have been at such an overwhelming disadvantage at every skill level.
So basically they were being cautious as to not split the pop too much, more players in one playlist means better matched games on skill and connection.
I am seriously hoping we get some more, but that will require them to make a decision, do we just go Crossplay only? I think that’s the only solution really to ensure healthy population is maintained across all playlists, skill levels, regions and times of the day. Lot to consider.
In the mean time population is dropping though bro…I’ve argued about this before but it’s just not even worth the effort to keep beating on a dead horse.
we the player should have opt in opt out. At the end of the day people are hopping off the game as it is.
It just depends on how you look at it. Is it better to try and create more playlists when players have been dropping and THEN you’re splitting the small player base left?
Or is it better to do such a thing when the game has a much bigger population?
One person may see it as harming the player population…let’s keep it simple…don’t give too many options…make them play what is available…because that’s all they get.
Another person may see it as actually allowing them to do what they wanted to do from the very beginning…except their friends are with them now…vs later when they may have abandoned the game.
Reminds me of halo 5 tbh. Which when asked for more, then we were told they can’t split the player base because now the player base was a fraction of its former self…when the reality is that the playlists would have people to play with when they’re available when players actually give a crap about the game early into its life…not when it’s too late and you’re trying to mitigate the issue you already caused by not having things available when it mattered.
Sorry I don’t want to stray way off topic, but yea man I mean…even just 1 additional playlist would be appreciated…but we’re living in a time where we’re really expected to get hyped about unlocking a very basic color…and to pretend a staple mode is some magical thing we’ve never had before when we finally get it…
@illeston3, you know, I am getting a bit tired of dropping large amounts of ‘MMR’ in a few losses, and gaining a tiny amount of rank for multiple wins as well. After ‘200’ ranked games solo (more if you count all of the ranked modes I’ve played) I’m pretty content at this point having reached ‘Diamond I’ in both crossplay and solo/duo controller.
Someone said in an earlier post on a different thread that the highest an unrated ‘Onyx’ player can get is ‘Diamond I’ from their initial ‘10’ unrated matches. Given that fact, I believe there are a bunch of ‘Onyx’ and ‘Diamond VI’ players (skill wise) floating around in low ‘Diamond I’ at the moment who haven’t played enough matches for the system to have placed them in their appropriate rank, and I keep running into them. Fresh accounts and smurfs are easy to create in a ‘free-to-play’ game. That is one reason (among others) that I suspect my matches get incredibly hard as soon as I break out of ‘Plat VI’ and into low ‘DIamond I.’
