I am only a Gold and trying to get up to platinum but I continually get paired with high Platinums/Diamonds. Shouldn’t I be getting paired with other Golds? My search preference is on focused as I want to find the best match for my rank. And what set me off to post this is the game I just finished. One gold that is obviously smurphing with a Champion and an Onyx rank. 343 needs to fix this, I really don’t mind waiting longer for a match if I know I will be paired up with people close to my rank.

Yeah, you last few Slayer matches have been putting you with other players (both on your team and against you) that are higher in skill than it should be. I’m not sure why the matchmaking is working against you in such a way. It could have to do with your region/area and the number of available people at your current rank. You might want to try forming a pre-made fireteam instead of solo-queuing; find people to join your team who are also gold. That way, you may find matches where the enemies are closer to your personal skill level.
What is your location and what time where you searching, you are supposed to be matched with people your own skill level or slightly higher I believe so maybe you were searching at a bad time or something?
Thanks for the quick replies. So I live in Colorado and have been playing the past few hours, 12pm - 2pm local MST. It kinda sucks that in order to play with other people of my rank, I will have to find a fireteam of golds. It will try to, but if there aren’t enough people of your rank playing when you are with a similar connection quality, it will expand the search to include people whose ranks are farther from you. That is the danger of solo queuing. No matchmaking system is perfect, unfortunately.
I am not asking for it to be perfect but this seems like a very flawed system. I just finished another game and the entire other team were Diamonds. This game shouldn’t punish people for playing solo. It’s stupid.
I’ve had similar issues, I was trying to rank high in FFA, and during the 10 placement matches, I was against high diamond and onyx, and ended up placing low platinum.
I came here and was going to say something like:
Just don’t complain about how you get ranked cause it’s based off wins and you & me play with randoms most of the time"
But I forgot about the searching for players your own skill level thing! Yes that NEEDS to be fixed. I should be in the mix with high Platinum’s. Not golds and diamonds.

I wouldn’t say that that Gold is an alt account. They normally have very little gamerscore, very few if any xbl friends, and no achievements in any other games. If you look further into his account you will see that none of those apply.
More than likely this was a team, and that in itself, is unfortunate for you but does not necessarily mean there is anything wrong with the matching system. And just because you are a Gold it does not mean you will not be paired up with Platinums. You want to be paired against and with ranks slightly higher than you so to give you a chance to do better than them and help rank up.
My main issue right now is being paired with obviously brand new players, very low XP, when I am at 146 Plat 4 in Team Arena. Now that should not happen, but the population count might have to warrant this type of pairing.
Really all you can do is just push ahead, and roll with it. Those terribly lopsided games are few and far between. I have been playing a lot of ranked Arena lately, and the games are fairly even and quite enjoyable.

I literally just got to Platinum 1 on ranked slayer after a few good matches with similarly ranked opponents. So I think this is good advice for people struggling to get good matches.
Chances are, you just have a game with a fireteam and those 2 onyx and champion players have a player who’s ranked gold so they can exploit the matchmaking so they can play with lower ranked players.
