Ranked progression is confusing and inconsistent

Nothing yet.

If they had developed TrueSkill3 they would have been promoting on the developers circuit.

I think the basic complaint is that people with large KDA don’t jump as much as others when they win… and fall just as much when they lose… so there isn’t a lot of hard examples of KDA having a large bias.

Would love to see a Q&A session with the MP guys.

Or they need someone active on the forum to explain things.

did u read my post? it was a win against a higher team ans vice versa. The problem was my personal performance/kda.

Pretty sure after the winter break there will be someone to talk about this kind of stuff. Not sure if it’s the same person from Halo 5, but he was very vocal and helpful on ranking discussions.

Yes the only way to gain is to win. But if you are the person holding the ball for 2:30 and go 20-20. You barely get any rank. While the person who goes 40-20 with 0 seconds with ball gains much more.

So I would rather lose and go super positive at the chance of gaining more rank than I would lose if we do lose. As you also lose rank based on the loss and your K/D.

I did read your post…

The post itself had nothing about K:D.

It did mention someone “unranked” - who could have tipped the scales of team MMR in either direction.

Again my initial supposition is that you beat a team that was similarly ranked.

You shouldn’t (and didn’t) gain a lot of rank from the win.

You then lost to a team that was ranked below you. If the system has a high confidence in your ranking (you have been playing consistently) you will be buffered a bit in how much rank you lose. If, however, your rank curve is still wide (low confidence), in that you are early in the season or have been up and down in form, you may lose a chunk of rank.

I agree that 343 need to explain it better.

I think the difference in rank gains and losses is more to do with the shape of that player’s skill curve.

At the beginning of the season your curve is wide (and volatile). As you play more games and settle into a rank the curve narrows and the system gains “confidence” that you are ranked appropriately.

The players who seem to swing in rank are still early in their ranking progress.

The narrow curve buffers you against big changes in rank. This can be frustrating when you pull off a big upset and see other people jump rank. But it also protects you a bit if you are caught by surprise by a lower ranked team.

At the extreme level it results in rank locking (Halo 3 anyone). It’s part of the reason we have regular seasonal placements.

PS. I’ve noticed that 343 have put a bit of effort into scoring objective plays… hopefully they can weave this into the ranking system somehow.

Yep. I think that was Josh Hanke. Would love for him (or someone similar) to fill the same role.

Ranked is completely broken.

Tonight I watched a streamer go directly from Bronze 1 to Diamond 1. Similarly, I have watch streamers progress from Unranked to Diamond 1.

By contrast, I have played 1,000 matches. I have been stuck in Gold 6 / Platinum 1 for at least 500 matches.

This makes no sense whatsoever.

You’re right… that doesn’t make sense.

Do you have a video link?

I’m thinking that his game hadn’t loaded in his data / rank so was showing Bronze 1 by default… and then it switched to Diamond 1 once it had loaded the data.

I do not have a link, but I have seen this occur several times while watching streamers since the game launched. If you watch Twitch enough, you will see this unusual progression.

The algorithm is working greatly against some players and greatly in favor of others. While reading LFG posts about a week ago I noticed a post that told me some gamers are using exploits to increase their rank.

Definitely sounds like a UI glitch. They were never Bronze 1 (is anyone?). It’s just the UI not updating fast enough.

Anecdotally I haven’t seen it misbehave from my end. It seems to work pretty much the same as Halo 5.

Haven’t seen any concrete evidence of exploits.

I am seeing a lot of emotional hyperbole though. Particularly when someone ranks up more than someone else. It most likely that their MMR curve is simply wider (more volatile) than those who didn’t rank up as much. In time their curve will tighten as well.

But people are desperately trying to pin it on kills, KDA’s, objective scores, hacks, or conspiracies that the game is out to get them.

People need to stop treating the MMR like XP.

I’ve got a 50% win ratio in Ranked but I’ve only lost points like one time that I can recall. The games I lose I usually go negative but my rank still doesn’t budge, even if the opponent is similar ranked.

Likewise, I’ve gone negative in a winning match and still gained like half a bar. Unless my curve is wider cause I haven’t played much ranked, idk the cause. I placed in Diamond 1 cause of all the Social games I played and my MMR was already established. I have close to 400 matches so idk what the deal is lol

Man i wish I could play that much. I got like 340 or something matches only so far. What do you mean you watched them go from bronze 1 to D1? Unranked to D1 makes perfect sense, but not bronze to daimond. When I boot my game up, while it’s loading my stuff it shows a bronze icon temporarily before it shows my actual rank though.

You have to remember that it’s a ranking system and not a progression system. You can’t just progress your rank from playing a lot. You have to consistently beat the teams where your win chance is less than theirs.

Do you play alone most of the time? Or with friends?

The streamer started the match at Bronze 1. When it ended she had Diamond 1. An increase this large should never happen.

I always play alone because of my daily schedule, and playing solo allows me to pursue challenges I prefer.

When it ended…what exactly does that mean? How many matches were played? An increase that large should definitely happen to cancel out the BS fake account. A bronze that plays at the daimond level should not stay bronze. That would ruin all other bronze and silver players matches, and severely derank their opponents that lose because the match maker does not see a daimond player it sees a bronze player who just obliterated whoever was on the other team. Normally not so skilled players do not stream unless its social or custom games. Streamers normally have some decent level of ability in the games they stream unless there’s some other reason for viewers to watch them.

I’ve played against boosters and it’s one of the most damn annoying things I encounter.

Playing with communication and a team increases your win chance tremendously if everyone knows call outs and plays good together. Playing alone is kind of like a lottery. You can also plateau your rank for quite some time alone. It’s hard to beat a team as a solo player, unless you’re up in the higher ranks and your team mates are also at that higher level of playing, knowing what to do etc.

I played today alone for awhile and my rank just went yoyo all day…the servers are absolute garbage right now too though. I have clips of me literally freezing on my screen and dying seconds later. I actually thought a cheater was causing it at first. I also noticed my team mates randomly stand still and eventually just get killed too. Weird stuff. It’s never happened before today. My scoreboard wasn’t even loading during my matches either.

The streamer started the match at Bronze and finished the match at Diamond 1.

The irony in these incidents is that the streamer is usually playing SOLO! WTH?!

Having played 50,000+ matches in Destiny, I understand how progression can change rapidly sometimes, but updating from Bronze 1 to Diamond 1 is ridiculous. Worse yet is those gamers who went from Unranked to Diamond 1.

The rank system in Halo should be revised. According to the latest from 343, change is coming soon. Hopefully, it will improve inconsistencies, such as the one I mentioned and others I have viewed on Twitch.

Appreciate this. I’ll take some time and read into it.

343 should be a little more forward about how the ranking system functions in the future. Thanks for the help!

If you play even at gold you would absolutely destroy bronze and silver players. So to see daimond…it doesn’t matter if you don’t have a team. You can do a lot solo, but once you are in daimond and face daimonds then it starts to become necessary to use comms much more.

You have 10 placement matches before getting ranked…it is a ranking system, not a progression system. Do you understand why players can place daimond? Do you understand why it’s important that they place daimond and don’t place bronze if their true skill level is daimond?

I’d be pretty confident it’s a UI glitch.

I don’t think you can actually drop as low as Bronze 1 in your placement games.

It’s very confusing. Thank you!
