Maybe this is anecdotal, but today I’ve been playing some ranked and have consistently gone down regardless of my performance. According to halo tracker, I had a 1.09 KD (not KDA) across my 11 games and 4-7 WL but went down over 70 CSR points while consistently being one of the top 2 players on my team. For reference I am in onyx playing against other onyx and diamond players most of the time. I’m not really sure why I’ve been going down so hard, as today was a relatively average day for me if even slightly less than average, but I don’t think I should’ve gone down 70 points that took me weeks to gain.
Does 343 have any posts about how the rank is calculated and what I should be prioritizing because I can’t seem to figure out if its kills of objective? I perform almost the same for weeks at a time and stay almost the same rank for days at a time and then randomly drop 70 in a day with similar performances.
I guess I am just confused on how ranks actually work and if anyone has any guidance on what to prioritize for ranked I would appreciate it.
The ranked system is complete garbage and makes entirely 0 sense. people abusing low ranked accounts in high onyx lobbies make you gain 1-3 points per game but when you lose you drop 10 points. literally have to go 80% win rate to rank up. its a joke.
There is a publication link there that has a paper on TrueSkill2. Gives a bit of insight into how the system works.
But essentially a win puts your ranking up and a loss puts it down. How much it goes up or down depends on the relative strength of the two teams and how much confidence the system has in your ranking.
A result against a closely matched team doesn’t move your rank much at all. This seems to frustrate people who think that the ranking system should act like some sort of XP accumulation.
A win against a team ranked below will move your rank up. If the system isn’t confident in your ranking (eg. early in the season) you could jump a lot (which is why they hide your rank during placement). If the system was confident in your ranking it will resist pushing you up too fast.
Conversely a loss to a team ranked below you and your rank will fall.
There is only a small weighting for individual performance. Halo 5 was on kills per minute. I don’t think we have a firm grip on what they have included in Infinite.
And finally the system falls down at the top end. The system isn’t designed to allow your CSR to keep going up (what it wants is you to play lots of games so it can sort you into a pecking order). So they put a bit of a break on it (a minimum CSR you can gain). This also frustrates people who feel their CSR should keep going up (it shouldn’t) and then get upset when it drops when they eventually lose to a team ranked below them.
It makes a lot of sense. But I agree they don’t do a great job of explaining.
Keep in mind it’s designed to be a matchmaking system. It’s accuracy can be validated by it’s ability to predict the outcome of matches based on the player’s MMR.
Sadly, people will find a way to -yoink- in their beds.
It actually does not make any sense. A win no longer feels like a win. You no longer want to go for objectives, you just want to slay out as the ranking system is looking at your KDA over anything else.
This has to be one of the worst ranking systems I have ever encountered. It does not promote winning or teamwork. It’s pathetic the state this system is in right now.
It seems like the matchmaking is a complete b.s. I’m platinum 1 which means I’m like most of the other players in the game - mediocre. But after ranking up I get just about any ranks, complete beginners and diamonds as well. Sometimes I get 3 vs 4 and the fourth player never shows up. Then when I quit I get punished for this.
This is just 343’s idea of a multiplayer. Every single thing in the game is bit broken one way or another.
Is there any confirmation from 343 that TrueSkill2 is still in use or hasn’t been substantively changed since that paper came out? Anecdotally, individual performance (primarily kills) seems more strongly weighted than in H5.
so youre Diamond 5 and fought against onyx 1700? Huh well… iam gold 5 and playing against DIAMONDS is nothing “strange”… its a -Yoink!- joke… how can i campete against guys with 10ranks more…? its so easy to fix… but… they didnt… just make battles ± 2 ranks around you and DONE!!! EUREKA! Thank you 343 thank you… gimme a job…
Worst ranking system to date…trust me its KDA and only KDA. I’ve been the objective fall guy for my team and have paid the “slow rank price” for that. I will have crazy objective stats but they mean little to nothing in terms of rank progression if you have even a -.5 kda.
I don’t care against playing onyx… was it in h5 as well. Problem is, that a loss against a higher ranked player seems to way heavier ina 4v4 with rather bad stats than a win against same levels with good stats in a 3:4. oO
I remember the days once you got into the high 30s/low 40s, you’d need to win several games in a row just to gain a single rank, but if you lose once, you’d lose one or even two whole ranks.
MCC uses Halo 2s ranking system. If you want true frustration, go see how the Legacy system works lmao
Halo 2’s system was basic, though, so you’d know how much exp you’d expect to gain/lose for every win or loss. Plus you could open bungle.net and see you’re actual progress in real time and know how many games you’d need to win to rank up.
Halo 3’s system was trash and penalized you the more you’d play.
i understand how trueskill works, but this just isnt the case. the lobbies have been fairly equal in terms of average CSR and i won 5 straight games in a row and gained 1 CSR per match. and then we get into a lobby where im facing a team that is in favor of winning and they are much higher ranked, in the 1800s with a low platinum cause theyre boosting and i lose 14 points.
But you can only rank up with a win. So the win is everything. As it should be.
Do we have any proof… apart from anecdotes… that KDA is of any real relevance?
It’s difficult sorting through the noise. A lot of people didn’t realise that the system shows your CSR gain from starting the session (and not just the last game)… and we have the issue with Oddball wins.
The game can only team you up with who is available.
As long as the teams are balanced there is no problem.
It’s up to the players to function as a team. The good players have to take on a leadership / protective role. The middle players have to work hard. The lowly ones have to change their game to be more defensive / supportive.
Whichever team does it the best will win.
Yep. This sux.
Definitely need a system where the player who drops out has a chance to rejoin.
Plus… I wouldn’t be against a system where the teams are evened up to be 3v3. The team of 4 can have 3 on the field and one on the bench - with players rotated in/out on a death.
Maybe take out the power weapons / equipment when there is a mismatch.
Or, to keep things even, could they readjust the scores to make it a live game? Take into account the current scores and the MMR of the players left… change the scores so that both teams still have the same chance.
Again. If the win was against a team of similar or lower rank you don’t rank up much.
If the loss was against a team ranked lower than you… you drop.
