There is NO reason a diamond 4 should ever be put on the same team as a Silver 2. It makes the rankings pointless.
Ranked has never been about having completely equal skill games. Its about fighting your way through to climb through the ranks.
MAKE RANKED MATCHMAKING USE THE ACTUAL RANKS TO MAKE TEAMS.
For example, anyone who is in Diamond 4 should be only be matched with people Diamond 2- Diamond 6 and THAT IS IT (unless of course there is a fireteam with 2 different ranks in it, then use the highest rank).
The way ranked works is everyone starts the season in the lower ranks and everyone tries to climb up as far as they can. The high skill players reach the top ranks fast and the lower skilled players get stopped in the rank they can compete in and have to fight harder and win more if they want to move up in ranks.
MMR makes the ranking system redundant, the game has predetermined who should win the game before it even starts, completely ignores rank when matchmaking and doesnt reward you if you play as it expected you to.
How It Should Work:
Play 5 placement games at the start of the season to determine which rank you start in.
Win 0 games you get Bronze 1. Win 1-2 you get Bronze 2-Bronze 6. Win 3-4 you get Silver 1-Silver 6. Win all 5 and you get placed in Gold 1.
Being able to start the ranked grind too high means that the lower ranks become pointless and it takes away from the achievement AND doesnt let the ranking system function properly.
If you win a game, you earn CSR points. If you lose, you lose CSR points. K/D shouldnt determine if you earn any points or not, winning the game should be the important thing.
But people insist on being able to play with their mates.
It’s annoying. And then you get those squads that use them to sandbag the quality of the opposition to try and milk a bit more rank. It’s -yoink-.
As you suggest, there should be a range limit.
It should be though.
It’s about finding your rank as quickly and as accurately as possible… and then letting you fight to improve.
That’s just unfair for all the low ranked players being slaughtered by the higher ones.
Why? Modern systems can rank you in a handful of games. That makes it the opposite of redundant.
The system is good. But not that good.
Why have a system that just makes guesses? Surely it’s better to judge the win or loss on the quality of the opponent and move you up (or down) accordingly. That’s how modern ranking systems work.
You are just adding a grind to the process. The system knows what rank you are. Hell, you even know what rank you are (spoiler - it’s probably pretty close to what you were last season).
Which is ok in principle. But is also where the current system gets a bit messy. Earning CSR points when your MMR doesn’t go up just sets you up for a disappointing loss down the track.
And everyone loses their mind when that “close” loss brings your CSR back to match your MM (ie. your actual rank).
And it shouldn’t now. At least if 343 have their weightings right. The TrueSkill2 paper talks about K/min - which just helps to identify a big fish in a small pond and let them rank you raster. It shouldn’t come into play in a closely ranked match. And it shouldn’t affect objective games (although it looks like it does - which is not good).
It’s the old saying. what came first the chicken or the egg. Are there not enough players because the ranked system seems pointless? I’m an 1800 onyx and consistly getting 3 diamond players on my team
there isnt enough player base now alot of people left due to the issues the game still has 343 needs step up or microsoft needs to find a dev team that will actually do something and make changes quicker the rank system is complete trash
