Ranked Matchmaking

I really don’t think it’s fair that there isn’t a solo-only ranked playlist for people like me who only play alone. two people is half a team. allowing duos in a solo playlist automatically gives you or the opposing team the advantage.

But you’re a quarter of a team. You can do it champ :+1:

I’d just like to verse people my rank… have yet to see one person on the enemy team my rank

FWIW, this is how it was in Halo 3 even though it was behind the scenes. I don’t know about the others but I think it was the same.

i agree. More annoying is that in the lower ranks there are always extremely skilled unranked players being matches with/against them.

I am basicly stuck in silver, wich is way beneath my ability, since i always have bad players in my team (wich makes sence since the rank), but almost always very good unranked players in the enemy team. Since my background rank is high enough, i never derank, no matter how often in a row i lose, but since i don’t win that often, it takes ages to get to get out of those lower ranks. And there is almost never a match i go negative in k/d, no matter how big my team gets pummeled. It’s just annoying.

If players are matched together then the system makes the games less balanced to account for it. Ignore the numbers as I’m making them up to demonstrate the point in principle.

Party of 2:
Player 1 - 2,000
Player 2 - 1,800

Total - 3,800

Vs.

Party of 1:
Player 1 - 2,100

Party of 1:
Player 2 - 1,900

Total - 4,000

To account for the fact players aren’t partied up solo players generally have a higher skill level than those that are partied up to account for teamwork. If the party consistently does poorly or too well based on how they are estimated, the game will amend their matches accordingly. So you may find when partying up you lose a lot before the games are more balanced or win a lot depending on how you perform. The system calibrates accordingly in either scenario to try to get to that 50/50 sweet spot.

So you don’t necessarily get punished for being a solo player. Often I quite like it. I play solo and am in Onyx in both Crossplay and Solo/Duo.

That might work for the higher ranks, but not for the lower. In the beginning i had problems with the AA being bugged (i found out steam was the problem), so in stead of slightly helping aiming, it did the opposite. And on top of that i had to much crashes (the game is now way more stable), so i got into silver, while i am clearly way more skilled.

Yet i seem to be stuck in that now. Because i often get silver teammates (who do belong there), but unranked enemies, who are clearly diamond or above when they will be given a rank. This makes it often impossible to win, since i am the only one on my team who can fight back against them, so my team loses most of the time. This makes it almost impossible to rank up for me and gets me stuck at silver, even though i (almost) always clearly go positive.

Yesterday i played with a US friend who was still unranked (he ended up being placed in diamond-3) and i was about his skill. We played against all diamonds and platinums on US servers (i’m from EU, so i had high ping), but i had still stayed positive all 3 matches, but finaly got matches where it was about even in skills (both between teams and the players in the teams). It’s clear that that is where my rank should be, but i just can’t get there because i’m stuck at silver.

This is what makes ranked so infuriating. since you don’t get matched based on rank, but on skill. This makes it so that ranking up is just as hard on silver then on diamond with the same skill level, while it should be way easier to do on silver, since that is a lower rank. Matchmaking in ranked should be based on rank, so that players who are more skilled then should be in that rank will quickly rank up towards the rank that fits them. Silvers should be matched against silvers, gold against gold, etc., etc.

By matching on skill it means you will get huge gains for wins and losses will be negligible. The games will give you a roughly 50/50 chance to win. If you get bad teammates then your opposition are also bad.

Doesn’t get it right 100% of the time but it’s generally pretty good at what it does.

Play more and you’ll be in Diamond in no time.

Can you explain how my team is always lower than the enemy team?

I go solo yet iv never versed someone my rank or lower yet often get the lower ranks on my team, for example:

My team: D1, D2, D5, Plat6 Enemy team: Onyx, Onyx, D4, D5. This is a very common experience in my games, have yet to have a equal balance of ranks or have a higher ranked team

It matches on hidden MMR not visible CSR.

If any players are partied up then that also affects the team balancing.

So what’s the point in ranks? I can quite easily say me and people get on my team arent even close to the enemy.

Like in slayer I’ll be struggling to get get some kills and I’ll probably just about draw in K/D or get 1/2more deaths than kills and someone on my team goes 2-13 while people on the enemy team are mostly going x2 KD (not KDA)

Hidden MMR fluctuates a lot for various reasons so it helps make the process more palatable for players. The difference in hidden and visible is largely for psychological reasons. Players tend to rank lower than their MMR so they can experience the joy of progressing their rank. It’s also why the max placement rank is D1 even if you’re playing like a 1900 Onyx player. They are taking advantage of my little monkey brain but I’m okay with it because rank up feel good.

I can’t say without looking at your game history but I assume this is largely anecdotal and you’re just remembering the most poignant losses. Every game won’t be landslide.

i understand. that’s because the majority of players are in higher ranks. there has always been a higher percentage of high ranking players than low ranks (bronze, for example).

my og post isnt even really the biggest issue. it’s that ranked doesn’t seem to have some performance or win based grading system. people can claim so, however when i perform highest on my team in wins or losses (best kd, highest score, played obj most etc.) my rank doesn’t move up at all. in fact, when I’ve a kd of 12-9 ive moved up higher in the rank than when ive a kd of 31-19. like the system is random or something.

It’s not random.

When you win you will rank up.

How much depends on who you beat (not much if the teams were even or you were the favourites)… how well you played (adding a very small weighting to individual performance)… and any drag from your MMR (if your MMR is lower than your CSR it will try to keep it from drifting further away).

But the bottom line is that you only really rank up if you upset a better team. Which is pretty much how the system is supposed to work.
