It’s kinda easy to get Onyx so the benchmark is low. Diamond 1 is the max placement so you got people who are destined to be in the Onyx 1,900+ range that are grinding through the ranks still.
Games should still.be balanced though as you aren’t matched on visible ranks.
Why on earth are games matched based on an unseen rank vs your visible rank?
That is enraging. It isn’t fun to go up against a Gold player and get stomped due to an unseen rank.
It is much more satisfying to get stomped, view their rank, and take a little solace in the fact they are incredible players. Who thought this was a good idea?
The game actually does a good job at ensuring the ranks are balanced for each team. Going so far as seeing individual players ranks and such to make the decision. At least every ranked game I’ve played has been a fairly even match.
I had a Gold 5 on my team against 4 Diamonds. Obviously the Gold 5 must have been winning, but why not just let his rank change?
Either do that or put him against other Gold ranks and let him jump up. It’s absurd to pair an entire bracket ahead and not even give the Gold credit for it.
That’s the nature of anything competitive. In sports, the #1 ranked team can lose to the worst team - it’s just how things are. You trying to make sense of it, makes no sense what-so-ever.
Because everyone is lumped together too much. They showed their distribution of ranks in latest new post, 75% of the player base is platinum 1 or higher in both controller only and kb+m only. You are finding platinum players that belong in gold or silver, diamond players that belong in gold or platinum, onyx players that are really barely diamond. Add this to the fact that you basically only lose mmr if you quit or you completely play terrible (like .3 kda).
Yeah Bronze v Onyx is like pitting PeeWees against a pro team. That’s what the “leagues” are there for. That’s why it makes no sense to put a gold in a team of diamonds and onyxes. Seriously, they’re effectively like being a player down.
I will say though, a nice thing about the matching system is that it appears to match groups against higher level solo players, meaning that I have come across a team of platinums that are clearly working together but aren’t good enough, individually or as a team, to beat a squad of solo queued Diamond players.
I like those matches. I usually get a competent team.
I completely agree with this, recently had games where the entire enemy team was upper diamond and then we had a gold 5 on our team.
The real way ranked is messed up is the fact that objectives are meaningless. The only thing that matters is kda. Regardless of objective win or loss, kda is king.
Ranked truly makes no sense. I have watched several streamers starting at Unranked go directly to Platinum and Diamond. The next time I watch them they are at Onyx. This should never happen. The most anyone should increase from Unranked is to Gold.
For me the MMR is too powerful. I’m currently D5 in Crossplay and D3 in controller solo/duo and get reasonably well-balanced games. BUT; I barely ever play quick play so the MMR info isn’t there.
A friend of mine is comfortably an Onyx standard but plays a lot of unranked; and obviously dominates. He is incredibly only D1 in ranked because he keeps getting drawn in games against Onyx. Despite my higher rank I have a lower MMR and get much more accurate matches
Well I had an Onyx 1550 crying today even though the rest of the team were platinum ranked and were pretty much performing just as well as he was haha - I’m sure the system will sort itself out once people start placing and whatnot over time more accurately
Diamond 1 is the highest rank we’ll grant to a player immediately after completing their 10 qualifying matches
So you can run into players who are a CSR of diamond but who are really something like Onyx 1800 and just haven’t played enough games to get there.
So when you are playing in Diamond, you are playing potentially against the full field of players who are actually Diamond 1 skill level up to top Onyx 2000+ level.
And it also doesn’t help that there is a huge variety in the amount that people care to play the objective even in ranked objective games.
