Ranked issue against new accounts - matchmaking problem

I’m currently in the platinum tier (solo, controller) but normally don’t do too bad. However, I just went 4k-21d in a game, getting absolutely destroyed.

Sure enough, on the opposition team were two new accounts (default grey mk VII Spartans) unranked, still completing placement matches that went 33k-12d and 32k-8d.

Why are these unranked players allowed to play against me in platinum tier?

Surely they should play other unranked players during placement matches and then go straight to diamond or onyx where they belong.

This was just a horrible, frustrating experience. What a poor matchmaking system.

Needless to say our team lost the match and some rank.

Also, with it being FTP what’s to stop these guys just making new accounts every night to go in and destroy lower skilled players like me?

What are people’s thoughts on this?

  1. That’s just how placement matches work. It puts players against varying levels of skill before determining to which rank level they belong. There simply wouldn’t be enough unranked players to put against other unranked players. Also it is my understanding that your visual rank is literally just for show and all matchmaking algorithms are based on the hidden MMR. In your defence, the matchmaking and ranked system is taking pelters from all angles right now as it is universally frowned upon and disliked.

  2. Nothing. There is absolutely nothing to stop players creating deranked Smurf accounts to boost their stats and match against lower skilled players. I was actually quite shocked and disgusted last night when searching for groups to play with on Xbox to find that there are Onyx or Diamond players searching for Platinum or Gold players specifically to achieve this. This was a problem that was exploited on Halo5 and is again in Halo Infinite.

Just had an onyx player on the opposition who went 46k-14d. What a joke.

How can there not be enough platinum players for me to match against?

How can there not be enough onyx players for them to match against?

Is the population already that low?

Same here. Im ranked platinum. Lately i have been matched alot against high diamond and onyx player. Lost match and lost also a lot of my rank points.
So the system expects me to win against much higher placed players?
Just 1 more reason why i stopped playing ranked.

My thoughts on ranked in any game is a joke.

Take Rainbow Six Siege for example.
I get placed in Gold-I.
Now all of a sudden I keep on facing off against sweats High-Platinum and Diamond ranks while also being paired with Silvers and even the occassional bronze.

Which sucks because often times the higher ranks seemed to be favored towards the enemy team in my experience.
And what makes it worse is De-Ranking. When someone is on a team with a weapon-charm that is Diamond or even Champion level but their rank is silver; it ruins the entire experience.

Isn’t the whole point of ranked to set your skill-level and allow the system to more-accurately put you in matches with similarly skilled people?

There’s literally nothing the current system can do if Onyx and Diamond players are partying up with Plats and Golds…this is why you get matched against them. Some do this intentionally by actively seeking out lower ranked players, but some just happen to have real life friends that aren’t as good as them (ie I’m P6 and could easily push in to Diamond and all my friends are low Gold or Silver).

What they need to do in RANKED only, if they intend to keep this flawed system, is to have a CSR differential limit that prevents lower ranked players outside of that limit being allowed to search for a game (just as it does it you to search for any 4v4 game with more than 4 players in the lobby). I’m not what the limit trigger should be, but let’s say +/-300ish should be about right from highest ranked to lowest in the lobby (basically whatever CSR it is for full 6 rank levels).

Admittedly that will piss off a lot of ppl like myself who can no longer play ranked with their mates, but it’s in the best interests of the ranked playlist. The only downside is that there may be a plague of players creating deranked Smurfs but the system also needs to be robust enough to identify skill patterns, flag them up and boost their rank accordingly.
