Ranked is Unplayable Bad

Every match is a nightmare. Here is a short list of all the issues I’ve had tonight alone:

  1. Games will start out a 3v4, where people just won’t have loaded in or something
  2. People will drop from games randomly. Sometimes right at the beginning, but more than once today they’ve dropped in the last round while we’re ahead.
  3. Ping will jump around randomly throughout the match. At one point earlier I started the game at 60 ping, and it stayed around 200 for half the match, before leveling back out to the mid 80’s after we were losing. Is this throttling? Some kind of glitch? Intentional interference by 343?
  4. Nobody has mics, teams of 4 will be matched against randoms who either can’t or won’t communicate in any way. Half the time if someone does have a mic they speak Spanish and I can’t figure out what they’re yelling about.
  5. Consistently mismatched lobbies where high onyx players will be in the match against low diamond or even high platinum.
  6. Abysmal hit detection. Like, actual rubber bullets all game. It extends to all weapons, making most everything you have access to just as useless at your BR.
  7. Legitimate cheaters using wallhacks and aimbots
  8. The clear discrepancy between PC and Console hit detection
  9. Catalyst is way too common and makes me want to delete the game.
  10. Actually mismatched games that are designed to FORCE you to lose to maintain the goal of a 50% win/loss. I’ve had multiple matches today where one team was favored by over 70%.

How is this supposed to be fun or even a fair challenge?

Most of those issues would be solved by a higher population. It’s a shame it can’t maintain one.

Long term ranked rewards may help filter more players into it. I know loads of people that play more Overwatch ranked than social just to get the golden guns.

Even doubling the number of people that have received ranks after the reset via HaloTracker, the population is very poor for Open and borderline unplayable for solo/duo. Divide the total number by region, day of week, time of day, and rank, and you’re going to end up with a pool that’s simply too small to consistently make good matches. Whether it’s skill, region, wait time, etc. the matchmaker is having to compromise to get folks matches.

Those who played H5 will recognize the ranked death spiral.

A number of the reasons listed above are why A.) I just stopped playing ranked altogether at this point and B.) When I do play it, it’s hard for me to take it serious. Recently it seems like it doesn’t matter how good or bad I play I usually end the day with a less than 40% win rate. I also think with the low population that some people are being thrown into lobbies that they shouldn’t be in. Its not their fault its the games for making the teams but I recently had a match where one person on my team went 9K 35D and a player on the opposite team went 31K 8D…so yea you can guess which team won. I’m average at best but it seems like that one person maybe shouldn’t have been in our lobby or either they were experiencing some terrible networking issues. Either way, I agree that ranked is a bit of a mess right now.

It was so painful last night. Every time I’m ready to give up and delete the game, I get a match where it feels like I’m playing on LAN and I massacre people.

They have to be doing it on purpose. This is all just one big social experiment, it has to be.

Absolutely, it wouldnt solve the problem like desync, unreliable hit detection and so on…
But we could much better random teams. The matches would be again closer and not one-sided

LOL you sound like me. Honestly i dont know why i continue playing. The endless grind in ranked where i never progress past Plat 6?

Its trash. Ive always hated ranked in every game and i think the way ranked plays generally ruins what makes a game great in most cases. But i had to play my placement matches to finish off all the achievements in Infinite, I loaded up some arena ranked for a couple matches and idk what the deal is, i have horrible latency or something and it feels like my guns do like half the damage they should. Ive been playing halo since I was 5 years old and got combat Evolved, ive always played on bad internet wifi with no headset while sitting across the room from the tv(Now i have much better hardwired internet with an elite controller and a Monitor) and ive always been a very good halo player without having to worry about going out of my way learning stuff like weapon spawns or player spawns, even in Infinite I have to drop 30 kills a game in Pubs just to keep the team in the game and we generally only Win becauseof it, like i am a good halo player and always have been, but Ranked just ain’t it. I shouldnt be able to consistently score half the teams points in pubs and then not be able to do anything in ranked. After 2 matches of horrible hit reg and lag and my guns barely flaring shields and trash matchmaking in arena ranked, i said F it and went into FFA because at least with FFA i only have to worry about myself and i can afk crouch spam and just get my games over for the achievement if i get super fed up. The first 3 games of that were obviously no better than arenas, then i just couldnt find a match and even got a notification after several minutes of waiting saying “There isnt enough players to find a match in this playlist” and the game isnt even a year old. That’s pathetic. The next day i loaded up and the last 7 placement games were pretty stable and had me thinking i just had a bad day and maybe ranked ffa would be entering my daily Playlist, eh wrong. Got put in Gold IV, loaded into a match and every previous problem came back in full force. Horrible lag, horrible hit reg, BR shooting nerf darts, typical ffa gameplay with too many leeches who lurk and 3rd party steal kills, i didnt even stick around. I just left. Why is there 8 players in ffa? Why is Catalyst the map thats played the most? Also, Grenade spam is a huge problem as to why it sucks. Yes i know some Neckbeard is gonna hop in and say “WeLl AkTcHuAlLy GrEnAdE sPaM hAs AlWaYs BeEn A tHinG iN hAlO” guess what Chief? Not anywhere near to this extent. The grenades in this game are stronger than any other halo besides Combat evolved and even combat Evolved Nades were fine because they didnt bounce around like rubber balls, and this part only applies to Unranked in Infinite but since theres no friendly fire theres no downside to throwing 6 grenades into a room with everyone. Ive said since day 1 that the grenades need to be severely nerfed. I hate it. Wont ever be touching ranked again.

Having “host” in halo is and has always been like having an extra teammate in my humble opinion

Connection matters more in this game than any other halo I’ve played, it’s wild how hard just 10 Ms ping extra can hit you. It’s like you’re shooting bb’s at people every other game

While I don’t buy into any conspiracy aspect lol, I will say that I struggled with quitting for months and months over this game. Stopped playing twice, only to come back again and try it one last chance before MW2 came out. A buddy of mine and I (the last friend I have who is even willing to play, let alone talk about Halo), we played 34 matches (mostly doubles). First half of night we won 66% of our games and it was playing pretty decent (not good, but mostly acceptable). So I thought, hmm, maybe I can stick it out, this isn’t too bad.

Then, second half of night, the desync was rampant and disgustingly bad. We lost 60% of our games at that point on. This isn’t the first time this has happened, and there have been times where I’ve felt invincible against opponents I should absolutely have had a harder time against based on their overall rankings. And therein is why I left and went to MW2, a game I do not want to play over Halo, but feel I simply must. Even beyond the insanely frustrating nature of knowing you should have killed someone and were robbed of it (more often than not altering the entire games outcome when it happens so consistently), but even more important than me dying when I shouldn’t be, is the fact that I know there are times where I am getting kills when I shouldn’t have. I can’t play a game where my own skill is unknown against virtually anyone, because I can’t ever truly know if they were getting handicapped by desync. That, to me, is a pointless endeavor and I won’t play until it’s resolved.
