Ranked is broken

The matchmaking is incredibly frustrating. Playing at Diamond/Onyx, I get an absurd amount of teammates that don’t have mics. More than half, for sure. A big chunk of those have voice comms off altogether so my call outs are moot. Then I look like a moron because I’m getting owned tryna play for map control and team play while my buds are sittin’ in corners, usually not even advancing to the half court line, ignoring power ups/weapons etc.

They’re de-ranking because they are getting demolished in those games.

If I was to login today and play for an hour I’m pretty sure I’d have at least one example of losing whilst my rank being untouched. It doesn’t take very long to put it to the test.

I don’t mean to sound like an -Yoink!- but I can only comment on my own experience which has, pretty much, been only upwards. If you’re playing with a group of clowns and know you can’t win you really can go into business for yourself. Get your own personal score up and either not de-rank or go down minimally like 1/20th of a level.

The talk of people going 35-10 etc and de-ranking is just not true in the games I’ve played.

I’ve stayed right around Diamond 5 all night tonight. Very few mics and matched teammates who seem to think ranked is a joke. I had one teammate returning a captured enemy flag back to the enemy, and then laughed in the text chat. I had another crouching in a corner for a good portion of the match near our flag and then another who harassed fellow teammates. It’s just not a great experience right now.

Oh my luck is dreadful in any game, it’s why I hated they forced people into ranked for the challenges and they wasnt even swappable. This is the reason I stick to the social playlists, can have fun and actually do well

If any of you guys complaining about teammates are on XBox, you really need to use the “Looking for Group” feature. This feature alone has helped me jump from Gold 3 to Plat 4. Having competent teammates cannot be understated. It is the most important thing about playing ranked. I’ve found a bunch of awesome teammates through this feature. The only way I’ll play alone these days is if I know I’ve only got time for one or two games, and it usually doesn’t go well.

I feel your pain… Currently Diamond 3. Last night had a match where we had low platinums and 1 Gold 6. Faced ALL Diamond ranks. I broke even but everyone else got dragged through the mud a bit. Lost almost a 3rd of my current rank. COUNTLESS times me and my squadmate get stuck with players that want to play slayer during a CTF match. Just more times than not it feels like the system is working against you. Not that I want the advantage ( as nice as it would be) I would just like an evenly matched round.

You’re right in the middle of Platinum, and you haven’t played that much yourself. Sounds like it’s putting you with similar level players, which is what it’s designed to do.

I don’t think that is how Infinite’s ranking system works prior to hitting Onyx. From Bronze through Diamond, it considers not only win/loss but also your individual performance. This is why you will see players lose the game but not lose rank. If you lose rank at Platinum in a loss, it’s because you both lost the game and didn’t perform as well as the game predicted you should.

Once you hit Onyx, you gain points in a win and lose points in a loss regardless of performance.

I don’t know if everything about how the current system works makes sense, but it’s not as simple as “I got punished because my team was bad”, at least not prior to Onyx.

The game appears to adjust player ranks less at the end of games where a player quit. Quitting is a separate problem in this game that depends on other things (game stability, a bad progression system that incentivizes quitting to get game modes needed for progression, etc).

When you quit, you lose the maximum possible amount of ranking for that game, and they have a quit ban system in place as well.

I can’t speak to the Platinum experience, but at Diamond/Onyx, ranked is definitely a place where 99% of players are trying to win.

Unfortunately it seems like a problem in general, not just because we have some people who aren’t use to ranked in the playlist. Even in social I am still in situation where it feels like I have to go 20-10 to have a SLIM CHANCE to not lose - which feels harder because the side kick kill time is even faster than the BR. I’ll die on the hill that this "skill based " match making system is fundamentally flawed. At least in h5, it felt “even” - I’m supposed to win some games, lose some. In infinite, the game is like nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh no wins for you brahhhhhhhhhhhhh - here’s a diamond 5 that goes 4-16 with 12 seconds of oddball time. .

i go from 2:1 kds when im in silver 6 then i reach gold and im at 0 kills.

last few games i played i was being killed all by one guy over and over dominating the whole match, and there is another sometimes in my team dominating and taking every kill…

this game is not going to last too long… cant imagine ill keep it playing once something better comes along…
over powered controller, broken sbmm, and rubbish ping

Got 3/4ths of the way up D5 today, close to D6, after spending 3 hours on it this morning. Was doing really well and thought I would hit D6 for sure.

In the evening, I dropped to the the bottom of D5 after an hour of consecutive losses. The whole thing is just starting to feel like a waste of time to me.

Some of it was bad teammates. Some of it was bad ping. A lot of it was zero mics. But what I really don’t understand from today’s matches is why K/D ratio is prioritized over playing the objective, as far as the ranked progression system goes.

I had one game where I had the most time with the oddball on my team, and lost a ton of progress. I had another game where I was one of the only people who captured the flag on my team, and lost way more than a teammate who made 0 caps.

In neither of these games was my performance that much worse than a teammates, but it seems the system really does reward higher K/D ratios than flag caps / zones captured / time held on the oddball when it comes to progress.

Close to putting the game down until its fixed. Hopefully soon.

My issue is I’ll go on a like 5-6 game win streak against people mostly my rank and will hardly get any progression, then I lose one game and lose half a bar or even more.

Like most people in this chat I have been struggling. I am mid to high Diamond and my friend is almost always mid Diamond 6. Sadly we have been trying all day to move up but what happens is for every game we lose we de-rank by a huge amount and it takes 4-5 good performances and winning to get back to our original position.
We have both put in 100+ hours of gameplay to this game!!! Sadly, we have decided that it is virtually pointless playing it in its current state and have uninstalled the game. At least until the ranking/ de-ranking ratio is addressed.
Great game in general!!

Exactly. I loved the playlist, but ranked starts to feel really punishing right around Diamond 5/6. I don’t understand how ranked progression works in this game, hopefully they will explain it further or revise the system entirely.

Don’t want to be mean here, but you are dropping a 0.9kd at plat 5 in ranked

I got a .9 kd I’m at diamond 6 it’s not about kd this isn’t CoD not trying to sound stand offish just want to get the point across that Halo has never been about kd to me at least it was always a team based arena type shooter where team play is key yea it’s cool you go 30/10 too bad you lose the game cause they held the odd ball for both rounds and you lose or never going for caps in ctf or strongholds just trying to pick off guys running to your flag I have literally watched a guy stare at our flag that he could’ve returned but he instead chooses to stay back and watch it as it gets picked up and proceeds to be capped because he didn’t want to push cause he was worried about his kd who cares if you die get the flag return or the ones that really get me are the people when don’t step into the zones for strongholds they will be I step away on it but will not touch I watched a guy walk away from a cap where if you just touched it you caped it walk around it tried to defend long hall this is c flag on recharge BTW he proceeds to get destroyed then they clear the zone blew my mind how he let it happen I’m not saying you do this just giving examples of the games I’ve been in and honestly I think people’s situational awareness is just God awful more times than not I’m dying cause of a teammates blunder be it throwing grenades at me or where I’m pushing which inevitably kills me cause I get exploded by the teammate then BRD to the dome to getting friendly fired in the back while fighting the enemy up front to them straight up watching attackers shoot me and not doing a thing till I’m dead or not pushing and sitting back then wants to push when you’re dead just to die as well when if he pushed together you mightve won the firefight but now you die separately it’s mind blowing go back and watch alot of my games in the theater and it’s not a common occurrence thankfully it happens more times than it should probably bout 30 to 40 percent of the time teammates are just making stupid plays that wind up getting me killed maybe 25% I might be a little generous with 30 to 40 I’m not saying I’m God tier and the best I’m decent alone but with a solid team I’m different type of player that can shred oh it also doesn’t help my kd that I stay in lobbys when it’s just me and 1 other dude the other day I was literally the only person on my team in a ranked match the other 3 dcd or left but I stayed went like 10/30 because I don’t leave games anyways sorry for the rant good luck to ya and always have fun it’s the whole reason we play right?

I am more curious to how it works. I play with my wife a lot and she is gold and I am onyx, it seems to struggle to provide balanced matches. I imagine it is quite difficult to do with drastically different skill levels. I would also like to see clan matches return, where performance effects nothing, just wins increase rank. I’m an older gamer so it has been interesting to see what people care about, it doesn’t seem like people’s focus is gameplay anymore, more so cosmetics and incentive to play. My old man brain says the gameplay was the incentive to play.

Halo 2 had the most ranking system there were just too many boosters if they made it do you could only derank 8 levels or so i would love it if they brought that back

Diamond 3 here, solo player. Tend to always do way more damage than my teammates and take way less damage, and I’m playing the objective and having a way higher k/d than anyone on my team and I’ll still go on like a 10 game losing streak in ranked. Its ridiculous. Then add quitters and afk’ers in half of the games and you have a terrible ranked experience. And I"m 42 years old. I don’t have a bunch of friends to just hook up with and play video games with. These guys have families and other things to tend to nowadays. Was way different in my 20’s obviously. Sigh.

From what I can see right now this went from bad to absolutely not acceptable. I was Onyx 1573 and in just 2 days I fall down to about half diamond 6. One day I got 8 wins and 3 loses and I went from onyx 1552 to 1546. This is ridiculous. Today I played 6 games when someone got crush or left the game and every time I’m punished for that getting -6, -7 then I won 3 games straight and I got +0 for two of them. How is this even possible ???!! I did 28K and 8D and won the game and you’re not giving me any points ?!!! I’m on 53% win ratio on about 800 matches so I win more than I lose and still my rank is almost always going down I need to win about 10 -13 matches straight to see anything, cause I’m almost always getting +1 for winning and -10 for losing.

And also for one of my friends he’s onyx 1776 or somewhere there and after every win he gets from +5 to +15 after losing a game he’s punished -1 , -2 very rarely above that maybe if he lose 4-5 games straight.
343 plese explain that to me cause I’m lost. I’m a hard halo fan but right now for the first time I’m thinking about dropping the game beacuse of this.

I don’t blame quitters, I blame 343 that forces crappy objective modes to people who just want slayer.

I also blame 343 for having objective modes where the most important thing to score is kills and not to actually do the objetive.

All of that wrapped around the fact that ranked is the only way to have a progression system in this game. I got 2 ctf matches in aquarius…what a hell hole. Dropped rank back to platinum 3…unisntalled the game.
