A little background first: I’m am above average player, I rank Diamond of Plat 6 (and will be diamond) in a lot of play lists… However I absolutely hate FFA.
I consider myself such a good team player that I don’t know when to stop shooting. Hence why I always lose in FFA. I always rack up the most assists and it screws me over.
That being said, I finally decided to get ranked (it was like pulling teeth.) not only did I never win a match, but I only made top 3 1 time. I mostly landed in 5-8th place…
I hated every minute of it, 2 of the games I actually set my controller down and walked away due to frustration. Soooo How did I get ranked ONYX?? I was honestly playing like I should have been a gold 1… Now I’ll never play FFA again…
Slayer is my favorite game type, due to the focus on rather tight quarters combat. But these days i find myself avoiding the mode, as playing at the level i have been placed at it just frustrating. Since placements, i have not had a positive game. I maybe get 2-3 kills and never get below 10 deaths, but despite this, my teams are still winning. Therefore i don’t decline to a more manageable tier, i am being carried to higher ranks.
I’m in a tier that is beyond my ability and something that i didn’t earn. While still in placements i was struggling with gold 5 and upwards, however due to team performance i kept rising. At first i thought it was funny, but now i find myself unable to offer my side in slayer. I am in fact a handicap. I don’t enjoy it and when i end a game 2k-20d, and my team loses 47-50, i’m sure they are not to pleased with it either.
Can one drop tiers in competitive play without “throwing” a game for their team mates?
I feel your pain brother, I’m kind of in the same boat as you, except the other way around. I’m high level onyx in FFA, swat and diamond 4 in slayer and arena, I consider myself one of those “try hards” as you call them here, I played doubles when the Playlist was out, me and my buddy lost 1 single game, but he got put in diamond division and I got put in platinum, let me also remind u, I’m the better one out of both. Now big team battle came out, I lost 2 of the 10 games, and ended up with a 12.9 overall kda before being ranked to a platinum 1, now I’m facing gold tiers and they have me going 38 kills and 5 deaths …do I love it? Absolutely, is it fair? No.
I think onyx is the only rank for it. I got placed there from the start. But with small maps l, too many players on the map and horrible spawns FFA is almost entirely luck based now. I will win rounds or totally get my yoink kicked. It’s pretty lame at the moment unless the cut it down to six players. I love when people quit in ffa since the maps play awesome with less than eight.
I’m starting to think FFA only has the Onyx rank since winning regularly can be difficult in a free for all game. If there is only Onyx then players don’t have to worry as much about advancing through winning.

I honestly feel that THATS even too generous.
Everyone should start Bronze 1 and have to work there way through the ranks. How would this not be more accurate then a simple judging after 10 games??!

I think a gold 1 or plat 1 is fair enough for the ceiling at the end of the placement matches.
its wierd i got platinum i ffa , my results wher more or less the same as a friend of mine and he got diamond placement , i had 2 wins , and one 6 place and all the rest wher top 3 .
but i get it explains why all the way thru platinum rank i got matched agains mostly onyx ppl , ther are no other ranks to be matched against .
most matches look like this nobody in my rank .
as most ppl are onyx now i guess most ppl will get placed ther if they get top 3 placment for 2-3 matches
Not only are the placements off, but so is the matching afterwards. I am Platinum, Onyx, and Diamond in the various playlists, but I am routinely placed with players who are in their first placement match. That just doesn’t seem right. I have been looking forward to a good ranking system since Reach…still waiting.
I think the beta ranking system was better than this. In FFA I pretty much stayed top three in 80% of my pre matches and still ended up gold one lol I had to work my way into platinum 4! I just don’t have a lot of time during the week to grind it out smh
