Ranked Arena - Players Leaving Need to be Replaced

It seems like 2 out of 3 ranked matches I play, at least one player leaves.

I definitely think players should be penalized for this - but I think the more proactive approach would be to pull in a replacement player to fill the team so the game can complete. It makes no sense that in quickplay, players are replaced very quickly, but in ranked, the player is never replaced. JIP players on that team should not receive a loss stat, and if the team wins they should get the win points.

Currently, if a player leaves a CTF or Oddball, you are forced to play 4 v 3 for the duration. And if you leave, you get punished even though another player has already ruined the game. So you need to basically AFK for 5+ minutes and wait for the other team to cap. It’s not fun.

As far as punishing players - first time 5 minutes, second time 15 minutes seems fine. But third time should be 6 hours. At that point there’s simply no excuse. 4th time should be 24hrs. 5th should be 48 hours. All in a 7 day period. Toxic players need to be weeded out, not slapped on the wrist.

I think these are good ideas once the game is stable. I get so many crashes that I just assume most ppl are crashing

I agree there should be leniency on the time bans in beta. But I think replacing the player should be simple enough.

Honestly didn’t consider the crash factor, so that’s helpful.

JIP for ranked games would be even more unpopular. Just think about that for a second and you’ll work out why.

Also think about your suggestion of not giving loss stats to teams that have a player leave. How do you think that would pan out and how it could be easily abused by teams?

More unpopular than having to endure a full match, man-down, and then banned yourself if you choose to leave that game?

I’d prefer a JIP player coming in and giving me a chance to win rather than an inevitable 4 v 3 loss.

What do you propose?

JIP for ranked is the worst, no thank you.

Waste of everyone’s time, if there’s a quitter you lose, GG. Get the game over quick and move onto the next one.

Join in progress for ranked? No thanks.

It would only work if you were immune to losing any rank if you join a game in progress.

But even then, what’s the point really?

Now put yourself in the shoes of the player joining in progress.
“time to grind some ranked”.
1 minute later
“wow - great job game, you’ve put me on a losing team - what a pile of b*******.”

If there is no real loss for people on a team that has a quitter.

A: “hey Mike, we are losing, one of us should quit so we don’t get deranked”
B: “good call dude. I’ll leave this one”
A: "okay, nice. If e start losing the next one, then I’ll quit that one.

Getting rid of a loss stat regardless of JIP is a no-no. You’d see people manipulating the -Yoink!- out of it and ending up with 100% win rates, making ranks useless.

Given that, JIPping into a losing game and collecting a loss is absolutely not fair for the JIPper. Best to just chalk it up as a loss and move on.

My matches this AM (11/30/21)

Game 1: CTF - 1 Member of their team leaves. We win 4-1.
Game 2: Slayer - All 3 of my teammates leave. I lose 49-30.
Game 3: Slayer - 2 Members of their team leave. We win 45-23.
Game 4: Strongholds - Normal Match
Game 5: CTF - Member of their team leaves. We win 5-0.
Game 6: CTF - Member of my team leaves. We lose 5-0.
Game 7: Strongholds - Member of their team leaves. We win 250 - 59.

So is ranked fun when in 6 out of 7 consecutive matches, the primary factor in who wins the game is which team retains the most players?

I’d rather take a chance to win with JIP, than an inevitable loss without. Make it like COD and prevent any loss stat for players who JIP. But leaving it as is is unacceptable and introduces a huge level of RNG into the rankign system that does not accurately reflect player skill for most players.

1 game in 10? Sure. Stick out the loss. 85% + matches? Nope. That needs to be fixed.

Just make it like COD and prevent any loss stat for the JIP player then. I also think that teams who end up losing should not be fully penalized for the actions of some other player leaving. There are definitely ways to do it. As far as people manipulating the system, just make the 1st time offense a 15 minute ban once the game goes fully live. No party is going to want to sit around for 15 minutes between matches.

So with those two notes you are punishing the JIP potentially more.

JIP: “alright, looks like I’ve got 20 minutes, maybe I’ll find a couple ranked matches”
Joins in progress…
JIP: “wait so my progress doesn’t even count? Well there goes my time now, I should have just played social. I can’t even leave because I’ll be banned for the rest of my time.”

My experience with ranked is not the same as yours - I havent seen a player leave but most likely it is a connection issue - I know many players have crash /connection issues at the start of the match. Your proposals (sort of but not really) just bandaid the issue.

The real fix that needs to be put in is to fix the crashing issue. Then you can start with growing time bans but once a player leaves, the match has been ruined - JIP just potentially spreads the problem to more players and didn’t actually solve anything.

Even then, the growing time ban times doesn’t prevent manipulation. You can still really do it up to 4 times (once per team mate) per day before it becomes any real deterrent
