Ok, so, i would like to start off by saying that Halo CE is what got me into gaming when i was about 9. Halo 2 was the game that got me into XBL (it is to this day the game that i have more hours logged into than any other game). Halo 3 was my first love on Xbox 360.
What i loved about Halo 2 and 3 was the ranking system. It made it mandatory to use communication when you went into matchmaking whether you were doing a pub or a premade. This lead to a very mature gaming community. I loved the adrenaline rush that you got when your high end rank was on the line in slayer. I miss those 44-48 comebacks. I miss the bragging rights, i miss the challenge. That is what kept me coming back for years.
Then COD comes along and sweeps me away from the Halo scene (because that is what my friends play, and i dominated that game). I loved the first few COD games but then i found myself revisiting Halo 3 and having a blast. Although i stopped sinking time into it because i had my rank locked at 46 (i got my 46 in >100 exp then couldnt get past that because i played by myself).
Then Reach was announced and i was like “eh”. Then gameplay was released and i was like O_O. I thought the graphics looked great and the gameplay looked amazing. So, i bought it on the first day and loved it. It still had that Halo feel to it, and i was quickly dominating the competition. 1 month later i shelved it. Why? Because that is all i did was dominate and never progressed towards anything! The game became dead in my eyes. The competitive edge had left me. I found that i didnt care when i lost or won, and that, my fellow gamers, is not what halo is about.
So, i have been doing some research as of late (after watching some gameplay awesome) and found that the latest on the ranking system is that you do progress towards a rank, but people cannot see that rank. Only you can. At first i was like, SON OF A B****! Then i realised that they still said they will take that rank into account when matching you with people.
So, here are my questions:
Can you lose your rank, giving you the incentive to win and communicate?
is the rank a classic 1-50?
How will you be able to brag about your rank if people cant see it?
Do you like the idea of players not being able to see your rank and vice versa? (i kind of like this idea… i use to get psyched out a little when the other team had an odd looking team)

I agree with you man i love the ranking system in halo 2 and 3 cause it gave me and most players an incentive to play the game more and it kept the game exciting and not boring cause you were striving to get that 50.
Bungie balanced the system great cause they had a ranked playlist and a social playlist were all types of players were happy.
I just hope 343 comes up with a good ranking system that is based on skill and not how long you play the game for like COD…
> In my opinion, the idea of a invisible ranking system almost completely defeats the purpose of a ranking system in the first place
Well, i am ok with it as long as it is, in essence, the True Skill system. Where if you can see your rank and it says 40, then you get matched in a game, and those people are ranked 38-42. I would COMPLETELY fine with that. It is better than what reach had.

couldnt agree with you more. i have a friend that thinks he is the -Yoink- because he is an eclipse rank or something like that. And i just chuckle in my head because it means absolutely nothing.
Wow dude I couldn’t have said it better myself. I loved halo 3 ranking where you could loose points and people got to see exactly how good you were and then you might stay up nights saying to yourself that you can’t go to sleep until you were back to level 48 or something like that. In reach I am like oh -Yoink- an inheritor (highest possible rank in reach) and then they suck -Yoink- and there K/D spread sucks so I am like what is the point in trying to get up that high if it doesn’t even matter except showing everyone that you can wast your life at something that your aren’t even good at… Personally I can’t answer your question but if I am good at halo I want other people to see it, so I hope 343 doesn’t just put you in a match with other people that or supposedly on your level. I want to see it. And not a huge set of points that one acquired on firefight or completing challenges…(reach) but something simple as showing K/D spread and have rank be acquired that way.
I do know that maybe a reason they won’t show rank is so that people don’t mind rape themselves when knowing they are versing a high ranking player. Other than that I never played Call of Duty, screw that game. Halo takes true skill.
I believe that the ranking system will be invisible to everybody but you(so you can see your own rank). this way, you have a goal to achieve, but without 90% of the cheating and abuse that ruined the experience for many in halo 3.
> In my opinion, the idea of a invisible ranking system almost completely defeats the purpose of a ranking system in the first place
actually, it in no way ruins it. The reasoning behind the trueskill system was to match you up with other people who are about the same trueskill as you, so that games are much more fair. It was the community that turned this unneeded number into a symbol of skill and reputation, making it the goal to reach the highest level, and made anybody who couldn’t get close receive nothing but humiliation. It also gave way to an extreme amount of abuse to the system, that the community brought upon themselves.
Totally off topic but I didn’t know that curse words were replaced with yoink. I mean I was like -Yoink-! And I was like -Yoink-! And then I slapped your mom in the -Yoink- and gave your dad a good -Yoinking!-. Only because he slapped me right in the -Yoink-. Oh and sometimes I like to grab my -Yoink- and go -Yoink- -Yoink- -Yoink- -Yoink-!
Oh and that -Yoink- on my team in reach totally took my kill… -Yoink-
The classic 1-50 will not be returning, at least not how you knew it. a similar sytem will be there to match you up with others properly, as well as a progression system(like that of reach). However little to no information has been given about it at this time.
There is no need to brag. You will be able to see your rank somehow, but I believe it will only be visible to you. If you want to brag about it to your friends, you can still have them come over and show it, or take a picture and send it. but if not, then you can at least have a personal goal to reach the highest level, without all of the abuse in the way.
4.I’m nuetral on this particular subject. I like to challenge myself to get higher, but other people’s opinions matter little. This is why, once again, I say having the rank invisible to everybody but you is the best solution. second best being the addition of those on your friends list being able to see it as well(this will allow a lot more cheating that the previous, but still not as much as was in halo 3)
just my opinion however. I know several others differ in that if they can’t brag about their rank then they would rather not have it at all.
What i want is to feel the NEED to win again. To want to strive to be the best. I want to push myself and play against the best of the best like i use to. That is what i missed that competitiveness.
If this invisible system is what will do that, then so be it, im all in. If not, no more halo for me sadly. I will probably become a full time PC gamer.

i agree with you but expect the full time pc gamer lol that’s not really for me and i hope 343 knows the importance of implementing a good visible ranking system cause if they dont they might end up with another halo reach…

well, from a buisness stand point, thats not a bad thing considering how well it sold. But, I hope to do they make a killer game.

Unknown. But possible.
1-50 is confirmed for not returning. Reason: the data proved it was utilized abundantly for boosting purposes.
Player score cards, recent gameplay matches, many other methods.
I am against players being able to see my rank only on the grounds its something I don’t agree people should see. It’s irrelevant to how someone is going to play and most of the tim in H2 and H3 I never looked at it because it didn’t mean anything besides seeing my number and knowing I stood in that “bracket”. but arena satisfies that in Reach far more then the 1-50 ever did for me.

Arena didnt do it for me sadly due to its unpopularity and the way that it was conducted in seasons… didnt like it one bit. Arena was just an after thought in reach where as ranked playlist (trueskill) should have been the focus

No info on the progression rank. However, if the Trueskill rank is similar to 1-50, then it is possible to do down.
The Trueskill rank system is not 1-50. It isn’t the Reach’s Arena system either. It’s all new.
You can tell them when they ask. And if they have a problem with it, whip it out in the battlefield and beat them to death with it.
I’m ok with it since I do not view it as a trophy to brag with. It’s a tool to help keep players of similar skill paired up with each other. Keeping it hidden from others is a step in the right direction. All we need is no cap on the ranking system period.
I personally hate ranking systems period, COD works cos rank doesn’t mean anything in that game and I can’t stand getting into games were everything becomes so cereal you can’t enjoy the game.

No info about that yet.
No. There will be a new system.
Um, take a picture and send it to them Or just show them your skill by playing them.
Not really, it motivates me to play even better if they have a higher rank than me. Then again, I don’t mind not seeing it if the game can match me with similar skilled players. I personally think friends should be able to see your rank though.
How about having a 1-50 ranking system that only the player and the players friends can see? That way people won’t abuse the ranking system with boostin etc.
