I’m seriously looking forward to the rank reset that 343i have announced.
“Since we’re going to be making some improvements mid-season, we plan on resetting Competitive Skill Ranks (CSR). After implementing these updates and giving everyone a fresh start, we expect to see players get redistributed more accurately.”
Far too many people are in Onyx that certainly shouldn’t be.
I’d like to see CSR given out in a way that’s fair and rewards the best player on the team.
For example:
Team wins - 1CSR
Top Player - 2CSR
Team looses/you leave/DC - -1CSR
Too many times has my game crashed (30 times so far to be exact) and I’ve lost between 15-30 CSR for it and it take around 2/3 hour to get that back just to lose it all again with another DC.
To work as a proper ranking system, with any sort of speed or accuracy, the gains and losses need to reflect the quality of the opposition.
The current system already shows us that match-making can’t provide an even spread of opposition (it’s just the nature of the beast). If you are at the top of the food chain you simply don’t get enough hard matches to drop your CSR. It will just continue to rise and rise.
It won’t be long and we’ll see players Onyx 3000 and rising.
And rewarding the top player just promotes toxic play, particularly in objective games.
Personally I would weed out the poor quality games… wait for those where you get two even teams (with good pings) and then weight those games for ranking. Give the system a chance to work with good data - as opposed to a string of meaningless wins.
Or it has to make a crunch decision and handicap the result. If you are a team expected to win then you have to win by ‘x’ amount to get the ranking. This opens up the possibility of winning and losing rank! - but at least EVERY game will be rankable.
You could benchmark the results and make it clear at the beginning of the game. eg. For Slayer you would announce that Cobra needs to win by five points to rank up.
It’s tricky. In general they have to punish quitters > crashes. But they should also expect the balance to be a bit harsh early in the game’s development. Once the game matures then genuine crashes will drop off and they can get on with punishing quitters.
